2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Nov. 5, 1935 INVENTOR Patented Apr. 6, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 9 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in a garment press.
In the operation of garment presses it is often desirable to adjust the head upon the garment supporting means to compensate for differences in thickness of the work or for other reasons. By my invention I provide simple means for readily adjusting the head relatively to the garment supporting means. Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and the claims appended thereto.
In carrying out my invention I provide a simplified main head operating means and additional means interconnecting the head carrying member and the frame for adjusting the head relatively to the garment supporting means.
The invention will best be understood if the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the head in open position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head and head supporting and adjusting means partly in section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 3, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The press shown in the drawings comprises a frame ll! having near its front an upwardly extending portion II on which is mounted the stationary garment support or buck [2 which may be of any suitable structure and customarily is a hollow padded member heated by steam circulated through an inner chamber. The rear portion of the frame has an upwardly extending portion l3 upon which is pivotally mounted the headsupporting member M in a manner to be hereafter described. The head 15, supported by the member I4, may be of any suitable kind to cooperate with the garment support l2, and may also be hollow and heated by steam. No steam circulating system is illustrated or described herein since it forms no part of the present invention, but, as will be understood by those skilled in the art, any suitable circulating system may be used.
Also supported by the frame [0 is an integral triangular lever l6 which is pivoted upon the pivot I'l near the base of the frame. At one free apex of the triangular lever I6 is the treadle l8 while the other free apex is pivotally connected at l9 to the link 20, which is pivotally joined to the head-supporting member M at 2|. Intermediate the head-supporting member l4 and frame, and as illustrated, extending between the pivots I1 and 2| is a telescopic rod 22 maintained under tension by the spring 23 contained Within the housing 24.
When the treadle I8 is depressed the triangular lever l6 will move forward thus straightening the link 20 and raising the rear portion of the pivoted head supporting member l4 thereby closing the head l5 upon the garment support l2.
The operation of closing the head 15 upon the garment support l2 may be performed either by operation of the treadle I8 or by use of the customary handle 40 on the head l5.
When it is desired to increase the pressure of the head I5 upon the garment support 12, beyond the degree which can readily be obtained by means of the treadle l8, or when for any reason an adjustment of the head relative to the garment support is desired this may be accomplished according to, my invention by means of the lever 25. This lever at its rear end is rotatably joined to the frame by the pivot 26. mediate its ends the lever 25 is joined at 21 to the head-supporting member l4, and at its front end it is threadedly engaged by a fixed screw 28 carried on the head-supporting member 14 by the bracket 29. As illustrated the screw or element 28 is provided with a handwheel 30 for convenience in operating. By turning the handwheel 30 the front end of the lever 25 will be raised or lowered on the screw 28 thus rotating the member or lever 25 and thereby rotating the head-supporting member and consequently adjusting the position of the head l5 with respect to the garment support l2.
When the press is in closed position the vertical arm of the triangular lever l6 and the link 20 will assume a straight line position so that even if the operators foot is removed from the treadle IS the head will remain in closed position. Movement of the treadle in the opposite direction of course enables the head IE to be lifted.
As illustrated herein the rear end of the headsupporting member I4 is enlarged thus constituting a counterweight which aids the spring 23 in returning the press to open position. The head l5 also has a handle 40 to enable the operator to press it down by hand also if he wishes.
What I claim is:
l. A garment press comprising a frame, a garment support, a head, and a head-supporting means, operating mechanism connected to said head-supporting means and a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said head-supporting means and having one end pivotally connected to said frame and the other end adjustably connected to the head-supporting means.
Inter- H 2. A garment press comprising a frame, a garment support, a head, a head-supporting member, operating means connected to said member, a lever pivotally mounted on said member and 5 an adjusting means for the lever on said member to vary the relative positions of the two, the lever being connected to said frame and being engaged by said adjusting means.
3. A garment press comprising a frame, a garment support, a head, a head-carrying member, operating means for said member, and a lever rotatably joined to said frame and having an adjustable connection with said head-carrying member to vary the positions of said lever and head and a connection to said head-carrying member intermediate its connection to said frame and said adjustable connection.
