This invention relates to razor sharpeners and holders and has for the primary object the provision of av simple and inexpensive device of this character'whereby a razor umay be. rapidly and efficiently sharpened and employs a reciprocating sharpening element and holder for the razor to maintain the blade thereof in proper relationA and With desired pressure on the sharpening element and which will automatically change the position of the blade or presenty they opposite side of the blade on the sharpeningelement as the latter completes its movement` in` one direction an starts ina reverse` or opposite direction.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a casing which may be equipped with a removable cover (not shown). The end Walls of the casing, indicated by the character 2, have mounted thereon bearings 3 rotatably supporting a feed shaft 4. The feed shaft has oppositely extending feed threads 5, also has secured to one end a gear 6 meshing with a gear 'I 275 I 'a -sidevelevation illustrating the secured to a crank handle B. The crank handle is arranged exteriorly of the casing and is journaled to one of the end Walls thereof for the purpose of rotating the feed shaft in arclockwise direction. I'
' A carriage 8 is slidable mounted on the feed shaft'by bearings I and is provided with legs I I which slide l,against the' bottom of the casing for maintaining the carriage horizontally. A spring pressed feedr nut 'I2 is slidablyfsecured to the carriageby a bracket I3 and meshes With the feed threads 5 o f rthe feed shaft 4. Therotation of the feed shaft'withthe feed nut I2 in engagement Withthe threads thereof brings about a reciprocation of the carriage. A 'sharpening element I 4 is suitably secured to the carriage and is of plate-like formation.
Arranged transversely of the-casing and rotat- V ably supported by the side Walls of-said casing is a chuck or razor holder I5, a portion of which is in the form of a shaft I6 having a groove Il therein to receive the non-cutting edge of a razor. A bearing-likeportion I8 is secured to the shaft I6 adjacent one end and -is journaled in one of lthe side Walls of the casing and has formed thereon a disc I9. `The disc is 'equipped with a notch 20 aligning With thegroove II. The notch 20 also extends into thebearing-like portion I8 and the'purpose of which is to receive the shank of the razor blade so that the handle, indicated by the character 2 I,`may be positioned exteriorly of the casing with the blade positioned inside of the casing and transversely of the Sharpener I4.
A bearing`22 is formed on the other end of the shaft and'is rotatably supported by the other side Wall of the casing and has formed therein oppositely extending arms 23 to Which are `pivoted hook-shaped elements 24.- The hook-shaped elements 24 extend in opposite directions relative to 'the shaft I6 and have connected thereto coil 4 springs 25. The springs 25 are secured to the end Walls of the casing. The springs due to their connection with the holder I 5 alternatingly act to VAexert ay turning action to the holder for the purpose of vbringing the blade in contact with the sharpening element with desired pressure. A segmental shaped plate 2l is secured to the bearing 22 and has secured thereon pins 28, which pins extend in opposite directions to each other. Hookshaped members 29 are secured to opposite ends o-f the carriage 9 and each has a cam-shaped end 30, the purpose of Which is to engage the pins 28 for the purpose of rotating the holder I5 in either direction to present first one side of the blade of the razor against the sharpening element and then the other side of the blade after the holder completes its movement in either direction.
