Description

C. R. M. POHLE.
Sun Dial Pocket Watch. No. 21,020. Patented July 27,- 1858.
Starts Earha t @rricnt IMPROVED COMBINATION OF THE NEEDLE AND SUN-DIAL T0 ASCERTAIN TIME.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21,020, dated July 27, 1858.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, CHARLES R. M. Format, of the city of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement, being a Sun-Dial Pocket-Watch for the Purpose of Telling the Time of Day by the Sun; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the drawin gs.
Figure 1 represents the case of a watch, made of wood; (3, the magnet, resting upon a balancing-pin in the center of hollow space; B, the hollow space; A, the surface for dial to rest upon; Fig. 2, the plate or dial, A, the hand placed upon dial, with hinges,- so as to fold up and carryin pocket 5 B,the open space, through which is seen the magnet-needle to get the point of compass.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
After getting the dimensions of dial, if to be made of wood, I groove out a hollow space sufficient for magnet-needle to revolve, and if made of brass, copper, gold, or silver I construct a mold to cast it. Then I place a pin in center of hollow space for magnet-needle to rest and revolve upon. Then I construct the face or dial, Fig. 2, by a stamp prepared to make the impression upon brass or other metals, above named, which dial is then placed upon case, Fig. 1, letter A being the place for dial to rest upon, and flastened by small screws or nails. The watch is then held as the needle directs, always pointing north and south, which is seen through the open space, (letter B, Fig. 2.) Then, when held in line with needle from the point of arrow, with the hand (letter A) raised to a perpendicular position. on dial, the shade from hand (letter A) gives the time.
I do not claim as my invention the magnetneedle; nor do I claim as my invention the sundial.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Combining the magnetic needle with the sundial, so thatthe point of compassis at all times at hand, and thereby the time of day ascertained from the dial by holdingthe dial horizontal and due north and south.
CHARLES R. M. POHLE.
