Description

S. BALDWIN.
Watch Case.
Patented Dec. 2 1858.
N4 PETERS Plmwunw n hn, Washingiun. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL BALDWIN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BALDWIN & (10., OF SAME PEACE.
WATCHCASE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,397, dated December 21, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BALDWIN, of Newark, in the county of EsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vatchcases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a plan of a watch case embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, on the line {a a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section of one end on an enlarged scale.
My improvements in watches relate to that class which may be worn either as open face with a visible dial or as a hunting watch with the dial concealed by a me tallic plate.
The object of my invention is to arrange the figures of the dial plate in the proper position in relation to the pendant whether the watch is used as an open face or as a hunting watch, without being obliged to turn the works in a plane parallel to the face in order to change the position of the figures in relation to the pendant, and I effect this object by forming two sets of figures on the dial plate so arranged that figure XII of one set will be at the pendant, and the figure XII of the other set at right angles to the pendant.
In the accompanying drawings is represented a watch case embracing my improvements, and consists of a single case, to the central ring (A) of which is hinged, on one side, a closed back (B) and to the opposite side an open bezel (G). A slight flange or projection is formed around the inner edge of the open bezel to which is fitted a metallic cap (D) which snaps over and is held by this flange, covering the dial as in ordinary hunting watches.
The bezel (G) is opened by a thumb piece (6) passing through the pendant. A flange (cl) is also formed on the inner edge of the bezel (e) to the closed back over which the cap (D) is snapped when re moved from the open bezel in order to leave the dial plate exposed and thus change the watch from a hunting to an open face watch.
Around the dial plate is arranged two sets of figures (f and g) which may be of different form and difierentcolors. The set (f) is arranged with the figure XII at right angles to the pendant, and is used when the cap covers the dial, and a hunting watch is formed. The other set (g) is arranged with the figure 12 at the pendant and is used when the dial is exposed through the open bezel. Instead of two sets of figures, a movable single set (0) may be substituted therefor which may be turned to bring the figure XII at right angles to or opposite the pendant as required, or the dial may be made to turn independent of the works of the watch.
Having thus described my improvement in watches what I claim herein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Arranging the figures of the dial without turning the works of the watch in a plane parallel to its face substantially as described, so that they may be in the proper position in relation to the pendant whether the dial faces the open or the closed bezel of the case.
In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name.
SAMUEL BALDWIN. Witnesses H. C. BANKS, O. H. WHITMER.
