Description

Patented Dec. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE METHOD OF MANUFACTURING YARNS No Drawing. Application November 30, 1935, Se-
rial No. 52,421. In Germany December 3,
5 Claims.
This invention relates to the manufacture of yarns or threads and it is a general object of the said invention to produce a yarn which shows remarkable elasticity and a loose, pliant touch. This aim is realized in accordance with my invention by combining at least two threads one of which is overwound or overtwisted and, at the same time, wrapped like a core by the other normally twisted thread.
Another object of this invention resides in combining at least one natural and one artificial thread wherein either the natural or the artificial thread may be used as an overtwisted core thread. In a preferred embodiment an overtwisted cotton thread is wrapped by one or more artificial silk threads.
A still further object of this invention is to cover or wrap the core thread of the yarn by the said enveloping threads in such a way that it is totally or substantially invisible in the final product.
It is also an object of this invention to twine a plurality of yarns each providing an overtwisted core thread and naturally twisted wrapping threads.
The overtwisted core thread consists with advantage of vegetable or animal textile raw materials and is manufactured in the usual manner by a spinning process. However, it is twisted or wound to such a high degree that, owing to the overtwisting it gets a considerable elasticity and always tends to run back into a contracted or shrivelled condition.
It would also be possible to make the core thread of artificial threads or fibres. The wrapping threads are put around the core by twisting or spinning. If desired a plurality of overtwisted threads intertwined together could be used.
A compound yarn produced in accordance with this invention shows great elasticity which is due to the overtwisted core thread and which may be regulated by the degree of overtwisting. As the continuous overtwisted core thread tends to contract itself and the wrapping threads, the com pound yarn, even if provided with wrapping threads of artificial material, exhibits a woollike, loose and pliant touch as well as an elasticity and suppleness which can not otherwise be produced with yarns of artificial fibres. The present yarn has, thus, a wool-like character.
As a fibrous material suitable for the core and wrapping threads any known materials may be used such as sheep's wool, rabbit-wool or other animal hairs, silk, floss-silk, fioret-silk, bourret silk, cotton, flax, hemp, jute, yucca, nettle, ramie, all kinds of artificial silks, vistra and staple fibres;
also any mixtures or combinations of such materials may be worked.
The invention permits of producing excellent yarns for needle work or machine work which yarns may be worked into tissues and fabrics of 5 any kind. It appears that the particular elasticity and the wool-like touch of the inventive yarn will be preserved even if the yarns or fabrics made thereof are washed or otherwise treated with moisture.
I claim as my invention:
1. The method of manufacturing compound yarns having the suppleness, elasticity, and the loose, pliant feel of wool, which comprises first over-twisting one or more core threads, normally 15 twisting one or more covering threads, and finally wrapping said core threads with said covering threads, the tendency toward recovery of the overtwisted core component serving to somewhat contract or shrivel said compound yarn.
2. The method of manufacturing compound yarns having the suppleness, elasticity, and the loose, pliantfeel of wool, which comprises first overtwisting one or more core threads, normally twisting one or more covering threads, and finally completely covering said core threads with said covering threads, the tendency toward recovery of the overtwisted core component serving to somewhat contract or shrivel said compound yarn.
3. The method of manufacturing compound yarns having the suppleness, elasticity, and the loose, pliant feel of wool, which comprises first overtwisting one or more cotton core threads, normally twisting one or more artificial covering threads, and finally wrapping said core threads with said covering threads, the tendency toward recovery of the overtwisted core component serving to somewhat contract or shrivel said compound yarn.
4. The method of manufacturing compound 40 yarns having the suppleness, elasticity, and the loose, pliant feel of wool, which comprises twisting together two or more component yarns made in accordance with the method set forth in claim 1.
5. A compound yarn having the suppleness, elasticity, and loose, pliant feel of wool, which comprises at least one overtwisted core thread and at least one covering thread of normal twist wrapped around said overtwisted core thread, said core and covering threads being respectively of different origin, one natural and the other artificial, and the said component yarn being of a somewhat contracted or shrivelled nature due to the partial recovery of the overtwisted core cornponent.
