Description

1 Claim.
V movement of the handle, when the jaws of the wrench have been positioned around a nut' or bolt head, causes the outer jaw to pivot, with the result that the wrench may be operated as a ratchet wrench; A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench wherein the jaws are disposed at such angles with respect to the shanks of the jaws, that they will firmly grip a nut or bolt head, without danger of slipping, when excessive pressure is brought to bear on the wrench in positioning a nut or bolt. A still further object of the invention is to provide means for bracing the jaws against lateral movement while in operation, and when the jaws are in the positions shown by Figure 4 of the drawing.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of con struction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed; without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View through the Wrench.
Figure 4 is a detail View illustrating the posi tion of the jaws whengripping the face surfaces of a nut or bolt head. I V 7 Referring to the drawing in detail. The reference character 5 designates the shank of the wrench that supports the outer jaw section 6 that has the jaw 1, formed at its outer end. This jaw 'I', is shown as disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the front and rear edges of the outer jaw section 6, .for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
The lower end of the outer jaw section B, is cut away to accommodate the reduced end 8 of the shank 5, which reduced end and jaw section are formed with aligning openings for the reception of the pivot pin 9, whereby the outer jaw section may swing freely with respect to the shank 5.
As clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, the shank 5 has an enlarged end portion l0 that provides a sup-port for the spring finger [I that extends beyond the end of the shank 5 and engages the outer jaw section 6, holding the jaw section in its normal position, and insuring the jaw section being held to its work.
The inner jaw section is indicated by the reference character 52 and includes a shank it formed with threads It that cooperate with the threads H; of the tubular handle 16, the rear edge of the shank l3 resting against the forward edge of. the shank 5 and outer jaw section 6. Formed at the outer end of the shank I3 is a jaw ll which is disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the front and rear edges of the shank I3. In connection with the gripping surface of the jaws l and l 7, it might be stated that the gripping surface of the jaw 1. is slightly curved from its outer end, to a point adjacent to the front edge of the jaw section 6, there being provided teeth l8 near the outer end of the jaw l to grip the corner of the nut or bolt head when contact with the face surfaces is impossible.
One end of the shank 5 is reduced and threaded and extends through an opening in the washer l9 that fits in a recess in the outer end of the handle it, the threaded portion of the shank being slid with the nut 20 for securing the handle in position. A washer 2| is mounted'in a recess l in the inner end of the handle iii, which washer abuts against the shoulder 22 formed at the inner end of the enlarged end portion Ill, preventing movement of the handle [6 longitudinally of the router jaw section 6, to restrict lateral movement of the jaw sections, when the jaws are in their open and active position gripping a nut or bolt head, asshown by Figure 4.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described I have provided a wrench wherein the jaws will securely grip an article and that by rocking the wrench, the wrench may be used as a ratchet wrench.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: r
In a wrench, a main shank, a jaw including a shank, pivotally connected at one end of the main shank, said main shank having a reduced end formed with threads, a shank having threads along the outer edge thereof, cooperating with the "first mentioned shank and having a jaw at its outer end, a tubular handle positioned over the shanks, said handle having internal threads cooperating with the threads of the latter shank, a washer fitted against one end of the tubular hanmovement of the handle section longitudinally of the shank in the opposite direction, and said handle adapted to move the latter jaw with respect to the first mentioned jaw when the handle is rotated.
