This invention relates to. anV improvement `in adjustable holders forlipsticksl,shaving soap, etc.,etc.V f p One of Vthe main objects of the present inven- '5 tion is' to provide a simple, attractive and 'durable' adjustable' holder suitable for Vwith lipsticks, etc. Y
A'further object of Athe present' invention is VtoV 'provide alow-cost adjustable holder which y and Vconuse in connection venience.
With the'above and other objects in view, as willappear to those skilled in the art from the following, considered in conjunction withv the Al accompanying drawing and appended. claims,`
the present invention includes all featuresdisclosed therein which are novel over the prior art.` In the accompanying drawing: 1 Y Fig. 1 is a view inside elevation of a-lipstick 2o, holder embodying the .present invention; i Fig, 2 is 'a central longitudinal sectional' View taken on the line 2-.2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1; Y f
Fig. 4"is a view in side elevation ofthe lipstick holder with the cap removed; v Y
Fig.5 is a view in side elevation of the cap; Fig. (iV is a perspective view of the carrier, detached;
button or member; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional View corresponding to Fig. 3, but showing .a modied form of structure.
` 'I'he particular adjustable lipstick holder herein 35 chosen for the illustration of the present invention in Figs. l to 7 inclusive, includes a relativelydeep cup-shaped body, generally designated by the numeral Ill, and comprising'a tubular portion II o-pen at one end and having its opposite end 40 closed by an end-Wall I2 which may be formed .integral with the said tubular portion.` Atthe junction point of the tubular portion II- Vwith its end-wall I2, the body I0 is provided with an annular rim or bead I3.
Adapted to nt Vover the body I0 is a relativelydeep Vcup-shaped cap I4 comprising a tubular portion I5 shaped and sized so as to be readily telescoped over the tubular portion YIl oiV the vbody I0, and an end-wall I6V serving when the cap Vis in place'to closeV the open end of the said body In. u'
Mounted within'the body II) with capacity for reciprocating movement `therein is a cup-shaped carrier I1 which may be conveniently formed from sheet-metal such vas brass, Vand which in- Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the operatingf cludes a'tubular portionl and a bottom wallV I9. A portion of'the bottom-wall I9 of the carrier VI'I is pierced and `struck up-to form a tongue-,26
spaced. a short distance inwardly from the adjacent side-Wall of the carrier. The said tongue 20. ispierced andthe metal displaced to .providegripping-means in the form of two opposed inwardly-extending. resilient retaining-prongs 2I-2I. Clasped `between the retaining-prongs 2|just referred to, is theshank 22 of an operating-head or button, generally designated by the numeral 23, and including also a head 24.V The said head 24 preferably has its `outer face curved to substantially conform to the curvature of j the outer surface of the tubular portion II of the bodyII).` Y c Y Vi The operating-button 23 above describedrmay beV conveniently formed from molded `material such, for instance, as "bakelite, urea formaldehyde,.etc., and *hasv the upper edge 25 of its shank 22 tapered to cut into a lipstick or the like which may bef'pressed thereover and which is Y retained by its flowag'e around thesaid shank.
For: the purpose ofpermitting the operating- Ybutton 23, and hence the carrier: I'I, to be moved Vlongitudinally of the body I l), the tubular portion II of the said body is provided with a longitudinal slot 26 of a width suflicient to permit the shank 22 of the said operating-button to freely extend therethrough and closed at its outer end by a stop-web 2'I formed by the material of the outer end of the tubular portion II of the body. To clear the shankr22 of the operating-button 23 and-thus permit its lower edge to substantially engage with the bead I 3 of the body I9, the tubular portion I5 of the cap I4 is formed with a clearance-notch 28. Y
In line with the Vopening provided between the Y Yretaining-prongs 2I-2I of the tongue 2o, the
tubular portion I8 of the carrier I'I is provided with a perforation 29 through which the shank 22 of the operating-button 23 projects for engagement with the retaining-prongs 2I--2I. The vwalls of the perforation 29 serve in conjunction with the walls of the opening in the tongue 20 from which the prongs 2I-'-2I are deflected,
. to stabilize the operating-button 23.
' In assembling the lipstick holder above described, the carrier I'I is inserted into the body I0 and its perforation 29 brought into alignment with the longitudinal slot 26 in the tubular VportionII of the said body. The shank 22 of the operating-button 23 is now inserted through the said slot 26 andr perforation`29 and forced between the resilient retaining-prongs 2I-2I until its oppositely-located stop-shoulders 22a abut against the periphery of the carrier I1. After insertion, as described, the operating-button 23 is effectively retained in place against all but forcible withdrawal by the action of the retaining-prongs Zl-ZI which are preferably arranged, as shown particularly well in Fig. 3, so that their sharp edges tend to bite, so to speak,
into the shank 22 when any effort is made to v withdraw the operating-button 23. If, during the insertion of the shank 22 of the operatingbutton 23, as above described, the said shank is slightly canted, so that its upper rear corner, to which its tapered portion 25 extends, is first introduced into the perforation 29 of the carrier il, the installation will be facilitated.
If desired and as shown in Fig. 8, a ringerbutton 3E! may be substituted for the operatingbutton 23, before described. This linger-button in question is provided with a circular head 3l having a convex outer face, and with a cylindrical shank 32 formed adjacent itsV inner end with an annular groove 33, which latter results in the formation of an outwardly-facing retaining-abutment 3. The tongue 20 of the carrier I1 is pierced for the passage through it of the said shank 32, and the metal displaced by piercing the tongue is bent to providean inwardlyextending retaining-prong 35, which extends into the groove 33 in the shank 32 of the operating-v button and engages with the retaining-abutment 34 thereof.
In connection with the assembly of adjustable lipsticks of the general type herein shown, one of the most vexing operations has been to couple the operating-button with the carrier. From the foregoing, it will be seen that by means of the present invention, the installation of the operating-button and its connection to the carrier is rendered so Simple that it ceases to be a problem of any import.
The invention may be carried out in other specic ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
