' 5 claims.
The invention comprehends an applicator particularlyI suitable for use in hairdressing establishments for the retouching of new growth of hair.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature by which liquid dye can be applied to hair near the scalp in a convenient and easily controlled manner Vwithout causing streaks that resultl from excess dye running down the hair.
A further object is to furnish anapplicator that will enable the operator to keep the hands free of stain in the performance of the tinting process.
The applicator is in the form of a thick pencil and has a tip at one end by which the tinting dye is applied. The dye is fed from a reservoir formed in a handle portion, and in one construction of the invention a tubular valve is controlled by a lever to permit the liquid t pass to the tip as required.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention showing the valve closed, and Figure 2 is a similar view showing the valve open.
Figure 3 is an end View depicting the shape of the tip.
Figure 4 is a perspectiveview of the tip.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a modied structure, and Figure 6 is an end view thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each gure of the drawing.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the applicator comprises a rigid holder formed in two parts l and 8 having a screw connection 9. The part 'I is chambered to contain a supply of the tinting dye. The part 8 is a cylindrical piece having a straight bore open at both ends.
Within the cylinder 8 is a tubular valve I0 of rubber having an intermediate constricted p0rtion Ill'. 'This valve tube is formed with an annular flange II at its inner end, which flange is shouldered in the screw connection 9 so that it is clamped by the member 1 to seal'oi the juncture. The outer end I2 of the valve tube projects slightly vfrom the cylinder 8 and has a central hole I3.
A tip I4 of suitable .material isafllxed to the protruding end of the valve tube. The tip may be formed of such material as sponge rubber or felt, and is preferably of a frustum shape having a rectangular front face I5. The tip is rearwardly reduced to provide a shank I6 that is cemented or otherwise secured in the hole I3 of the valve tube. Both the cylinder and the valve tube are chamberd ush with the conical surface of the tip.
Integral with the cylinder 8 is a seat Il that projects inwardly of the bore so as to substantially conform to the curvature of the constricted part of the valve tube. Opposite the seat is a lever I8 pivoted to the cylinder at Il)v and projecting inwardly through a slot. The lever is in the form of a reverse lcurve, the inner curve of which bears against the constricted part of the 10 valve tube, While the outer part is a iinger piece. The lever is spring urged as 'at 20 so as to compress the valve tube to prevent liquid flowing t0V` the tip. A
The applicator is conveniently held in the hand and the tinting dye applied by dabbing with the tip. By pressure upon the lever, the constricted part of the valve tube is enabled to relax, which vprovides a 'passage for liquid from the reservoir,
as shown in Figure l2..
In the variant form shown in Figures 5 and 6, the holder 2| contains the iluid and has a tapered cap 22 that carries the tip 23. The tip is made of sponge rubber and the tapered face of the vcap is knurled as at 24 to enable it to be unscrewed at 25 for detachment'purposes. The holder .has an annular recess 26 Aproviding a finger-grip portion.
It has been found in actual practice that the dabbing action of applying the liquid dye causes it to feed through the sponge rubber tip. This construction is inexpensive to manufacture and n serviceable to use. Furthermore, the feed of the liquid is governed by the diameter of the` shank portion of the tip.
What I claim is:
1. An applicator for tinting hair, composed of a rigid member in the form of a thick pencil, said member consisting of two parts having a screw connection, one of the parts being cham-I bered to constitute a reservoir and the Iother part having a central opening, and a sponge rubber tip of a frustum shape converging to a rectangular point, said tip having a rear shank portion mounted in said hole to which tinting fluid is supplied by the reservoir.
2. In an applicator for tinting hair, a rigid cylinder having a slot at' one side and an integral seat inwardly projecting from the other side, a rubber valve tube disposed in said cylinder and having a constricted part providing a reduced fluid passage, said seat being engaged with the constricted part of the valve tube, a lever pivoted on the cylinder and having a pressure-applying end extending through the aforesaidslot and t contacting the constricted part of the valve tube,
a spring normally urging said lever to 'apply clamping pressure on the valve tube, and a dabbing tip adapted to be moistened by uid delivered through the valve tube.
3. In an applicator or tinting hair, a rigid cylinder having a slot at one side and an integral seat inwardly projecting from the other side, a, rubber valve tube inserted in said cylinder With one end projecting therefrom and the other end adapted to communicate with a reservoir, said valve tube having an intermediate constricted part providing a reduced uid passage, the aforesaid seat being engaged with said constricted part of the valve tube, a lever pivoted on the cylinder and having a pressure applying end extending through the aforesaid slot and contacting the constricted part of the valve tube, a spring normally urging said lever to apply clamping pressure on the valve tube, and a dabbing tip fitted infthe projecting end of the valve tube.
4. An applicator in accordance with claim 3, in which the dabbing tip consists of a substantially frustum shaped piece of absorbent material having a reduced shank portion cemented in a central hole in the projecting end of the valve tube.
5. An applicator of the class described comprising a rigid holder formed in two parts having a screw connection providing a shoulder, one of the parts constituting a reservoir and the other part forming a cylinder having a uniform bore open at both ends, a rubber valve tube extending through the cylinder and having a flange at its inner end fitted against the shoulder aforesaid and clamped by the screw connection of the two parts of the holder, the other end of the valve tube projecting outwardly of the cylinder part, said valve tube having a constricted part intermediate of its length providing a'reduced fluid passage, a seat integral with one side of the cylinder and protruding into the bore thereof to engage the constricted part of the valve tube, a spring-urged lever pivoted at the opposite side of the cylinder and compressing the said constricted partagainst said seat, and a dabbing tip of absorbent material iitted in and extending from the projecting end of, the valve tube.
