A pivoted lever 53 is mounted on the gear housing I I and has a pin 54 which may be moved into any one of the apertures 52 to secure the spindle 40 in xed position. At its outer end the spindle 40 is also provided with a reduced threaded p0rtion 55 which is adapted to be received in the complementary threaded bore 56 of the hub 51 of a sanding wheel 58.
The sanding wheel usually comprises a sheet metal backing 59 to which is riveted or otherwise xedly secured a rubber disc 5D having secured upon it a polishing bonnet or a sanding disc 6I. By means of the gear shifting arrangement controlled with the thumb button 3| it is possible to rotate the sanding disc 6I at two different speeds. Relatively fast rotation may be secured for certain sanding operations, and a slower and more powerful action may be secured for other operations.
It will thus be observed that I have invented an improved sanding machine having a two speed gear arrangement; the ratio of the speed reduction gearing being used may be very quickly changed by merely reciprocating the push rod 28. Push rod 28 is held in either of its two positions by means of a spring-pressed ball 62 which is mounted in a bore 63 and engaged by a spring 64 reacting against a screw plug 65.
While I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of all changes within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In an electric sanding and polishing machine, the combination of an electric motor having a drive shaft and housing, with a gear housing carried by said motor housing, speed reduction gearing located in said gear housing, a drive spindle rotatably mounted in said gear housing and projecting therefrom, said drive spindle being operatively connected to said motor through said speed reduction gearing, and said drive spindle having a threaded portion, a sanding Wheel having a hub provided with a complementary threaded portion, said sanding wheel being adapted to support operating tools, a thrust collar carried by said drive spindle, said thrust collar being provided with a radially extending socket, and a pivoted lever carried by said gear housing, said pivoted lever being mounted in a pivot extending substantially parallel to said drive spindle, and having a transversely extending cylindrical lug adapted to be received in said socket whereby the spindle may be secured and held in fixed position by means of said pivoted lever, while the sanding wheel is threaded on or oi the threaded portion of said drive spindle.
2. In an electric sanding and polishing machine, the combination of an electric motor having a drive shaft and housing, with a gear housing carried by said motor housing, gearing located in said gear housing, a drive spindle rotatably mounted in said gear housing, said drive spindle being operatively connected to said motor through said gearing, and said drive spindle having a threaded portion, an operating tool carried by a complementary threaded member mounted on said drive spindle, said member being provided with an inwardly extending socket, and a pivoted lever carried by said gear housing, said pivoted lever being mounted in a pivot extending substantially parallel to said drive spindle, and having a transversely extending lug adapted to be received in said socket whereby the spindle may be secured and held in xed position by means of said pivoted lever, while the sanding wheel is threaded on or oif the threaded portion of said drive spindle.
