5 Claims.
This invention relates to blowers and more particularly to the type of blowers which are adapted to be used in connection with household furnaces to force a predetermined amount of air through 5 the fuel so that the smaller inexpensive sizes of anthracite coal, such as rice, buckwheat, or screenings can be used for heating purposes, in lieu of the larger and more expensive sizes of coal. An object of the invention is toprovide an improved blower of the type in which a suitable constructed casing of simple form is adapted to be combined with a standard form of electric fan. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved blower of the above type in which the 1 casingof the blower is secured tothe brackets of the electric fan which support the usual guard, the change over from electric fan to blower being readilymade by detaching the guard, inserting the fan within the blower casing, and then se- 20 curing the guard brackets to the blower casing. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved blower of the above type in which means are included for altering the area of the inlet opening of the blower so that the desired 2:; quantity of air willbe delivered by the blower to a furnace or other apparatus with which theblower is connected.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages inyiew, the inventionconsists in the an preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings:- I

50 Referring to the diawings, the device is supported by a pedestal II that has fixed thereto an electric motor l2.
The motor l2 has an armature shaft 13, to one extremity of which is fixed a fan of well known 56 type.
Fixed to the fan end of the electric motor l2 are four arms l5 which are adapted to support a suitable guard (not shown), when the device is used as an electric fan. The extremity of each arm is bent laterally, as indicated at-IS, Fig. 5, and near the end of each arm there is a hole H for the reception of asecuring element, such as a screw or the like.
The parts above described constitute the elements commonly usedin the construction of well known electric fans and need no further explanation. However, in order to utilize such fans with my invention the usual guard which *surrounds the fan It is not needed and consequently such element is not shown, since it is removed from the arms. i5.
In order that the fancan be used as ablower for introducing a desired quantity of air under pressure to a furnace or other apparatus, .1 construct a suitable casing 2| which is adapted to be supported from the arms l5, so that the whole device is carried solely by the pedestal H. 7
As shown, the casing 2| may be made of a single casting having a rather large annular opening 22 formed in the side wall 23 thereof which faces the electric motor 12.
The purpose of forgning the large opening 22 is to permit'the insertion of the blades of the I fan It into the casing without the necessity of disassembling theparts.
' As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it will be noted that the diameter of the opening 22 is slightly less than the diameter of the fan I4. However, the opening 22 is so formed in the side wall 23 with respect to the circumferential wall 24 of j the casing 2! that the fan It can be readily inserted into the casing through the opening 22 by moving the fan laterally with respect to the opening 22 and shifting the casing 2| with respect to the several blades of the fan until such blades are all disposed within the casing.
The. wall 23 is formed with a plurality of lugs 25, onefor each arm 15 (see Figs. 3. and 5).
A threaded hole 26 is formed in each lug 25, so that after the fan M has been inserted within the casing 2! the holes I! can be registered with the holes 26, and screws 21 inserted therein for securing the casing to the motor l2.
The fan I4 is eccentrically disposed within the casing 2|, and said casing is formed with an outlet or discharge end-28, to which may be connected a pipe, flexible hose, or the like (not shown), for conducting air under pressure from the blower to the apparatus with which the blower is adapted to be connected.
In order to provide means by which the desired amount of air will be drawn into the easing 2| by the fan H, the ring 29 is detachably mounted on the inlet side wall 23 ofthe casing, said ring being held in place by a plurality of screws 30.
The ring 29 is formed'with ah outwardly extending flange 3| which overlies the side wall 23, and an inwardlyextending flange 32, the inner edge of which is rounded, as shown at 33. 'The flanges 3| and 32 are oilset with respect to each other, as shown in Fig. 2, flange 32 alining substantially with the side wall23 so that when the ring 29 is in position on the casing a smooth surface will be formed on the interiorof the inlet side of the casing.
Between the flanges 3| and 32, the. ring 29 is formed with two shoulders 34 and 35, shoulder 34 fitting singly against the edge of opening 22, and shoulder 35 being on the exterior of the ring.
For the purpose of providing an inlet in the casing of varying sizes, use is made of a pair of semi-circular plates or disks 36 and 31.
The disks 36 and 31 are similarly formed (see Fig. 4), and spring'flngers or clips 40 are provided'for detachably securing said disks in position on the ring 29 (see Fig. 6).
Each disk is shaped to conform around its periphery with the flanged portion 32 of the ring 29 so that when said disks are installed they form v an inward extension of said ring, (see Fig. 2). Along the adjoining edges of the disks 38, 31 the central portions are cut out, as indicated at 38, 39,
so that a suitable annular opening is provided around the projecting portion of the casing of the electric motor I2 which supports the portion of the shaft |3 between the main body of the motor and the fan l4, the cut-out portions 38, 39 pro vide a restricted inlet opening for the air which is drawn into the casing 2| by the fan l4.
As shown. in Figs. 1 and 2, when a small quantity of air is wanted, the two disks 36 and 31 are mounted on the ring 29.
When a greater quantity of air is required, one
or both of the disks can be removed. In Fig. 3, the disk-36 is not shown, and consequently the area of the inlet opening is approximately the area of one half of the internal diameter of the ring 29, plus the area of the cut out portion 39 of the disk 31, and minus the inner projecting portion of the motor structure heretofore referred to.
The outer side wall 4| of the casing 2| converges inwardly towards the center, as indicated at 42 Fig. 2, so as to conform somewhat to the general .outline ofthe outer edges of the fan blades. By
this construction the general contour of the interior of, thecasing is such that when the fandraws air into the casing through the inlet opening the air will be forced outwardly towards the circumferential 'wall 24. of the casing. ,At .the same time the air-is forced in the direction of rotation of the fan,'as shown by the arrow Fig. 1, towards the outlet 23.
The contour of the casing 2| is such as the tangential to the casing, the air flows away from the fan blades and the blades of the fan continue to travel in acircular direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I -1. An'apparatus oi the class described, comprising a rotatable fan, an electric motor for operating said fan, a spiral casing enclosing said fan and having an inlet opening adjacent one end of the motor and an outlet opening, a plurality of arms carried by the motor and projecting outwardly therefrom, means for detachably connecting the extremities of said arms with said casing whereby the casing is supported solely by said motor, a ring detachably mounted insaid inlet opening of the casing, and a plurality of disks detachably carried by said ring for varying the area of said inlet opening.

Anapparatus of the class describedpcomprising a rotatable fan, an electric motor for operating said fan, a casing supported from said motor and enclosing said fan, an inlet opening formed in the side wall of said casing facing the motor, a ring detachably mounted in said inlet opening, and a plurality of disks detachably carried by said ring for varying the area of said inlet opening. v
3 An apparatus of the class described, comprising a rotatable fan, an electric motor for operating said fan, a casing supported from said motor and enclosing said fan, an inlet opening formed in the sidewall of said casing facing the opening, two semicircular disks, and means for detachably mounting said disks in said ring.

An apparatus of the class described, comprising a rotatable fan,anelectric motor for operating said fan, a casingisupported by said motor and enclosing said fan, an inlet opening formed in the side wall of said casing adjacent said :motor, and a plurality of detachable elements motor, a ring detachably mounted in said inlet 40 ating said fan, a casing enclosing said fan, anin- Y let opening formed in the side wall of said casing adjacent said motor, a flanged ring detachably mounted in said inlet opening and having an inner wall flush with the inner portion of the side .wall of the casing, flanged disk mounted on said ring for controlling the area of said inlet opening, and means for detachably connecting said '30 disk-with said casing.
