Heretofore impellers for rotary pumps type with which the present invention is concerned have been principally of the flat bladed type, with the blades projecting radially in opposite directions from a central axis, and with said axis lying in the plane of the blades.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide an impeller which is .more suitable than the above mentioned type of impeller for certain types of uses such as the pumping of viscous liquids, or food products such as tomatoes, diced fruits, diced potatoes, soybean mash, and the like.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved impeller which is formed from a flat plate, the portions of the plate on each side of its transverse center line being twisted symmetrically in opposite directions about said center line and the amount of twist being less than 90.
A further object of the invention is to provide' a pump having an impeller as above deamount of twist on the impeller blades bears a different relationship with the width and breadth of the impeller chamber outlet.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump construction which permits control of the November 15, 1946, Serial No. 709,905 Claims. Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral. In designates a pump casing which i in general includes a cup-shaped body portion of the pump curve characteristics by the amount of pitch provided by the twisted portions of the impeller blade to thereby adapt the pump to particular uses in such a way that the maximum efliciency is obtained.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a pump which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction, which is strong and durable, and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improvements in pumps and impellers therefor, and all its parts and combinations, as set forth in the claims, and 'all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one complete embodiment of the prefered form of the invention, in which. the same reference numerals designate the same parts in all of the views:

' ing 'angle illustrated II and a cover I2. The body portion H has a central boss H projecting therefrom through which a drive shaft I3 is journalled. The inner end of the drive shaft projects rotatably into the impeller chamber l4.
Projecting from the periphery of the pump body portion II is an outlet duct 15. The outlet duct communicates with impeller chamber 14 by means of an opemng I which is the outlet opening for the impeller chamber. When the outlet passageway is circular in cross-section as at H, and when it joins the periphery of the impeller chamber at the in Fig. 2, the opening IE will be elliptical. The exact shape of the opening l8 may be varied considerably, depending upon the angle at which the outlet duct 15 intersects the periphery, and depending upon the cross-sectional shape of the passageway portion I1. In many applications it is advantageous to design the cross-section at H as an ellipse. when this is done the shape and dimensions of the open- IB are varied. It is thus apparent that there may be an infinite variety of cross-sectional shapes at H, each one producing a variation in the width a (Fig. 3) of the pump casing outlet,
and in the breadth between the points b and c.
The impeller, designated generally by the numeral I8 is formed from a flat metal plate having the general shape shown in Fig. 4. In
producing this plate the angles d may be varied according to the amount of twist which there is to be in the finished blade. If there is to be only a small amount of twist, then the angles at will be just large enough so that when the plate portions are twisted about the center line e, the edges 19 v will lie in perpendicular planes, parallel to each other, and taken along the lines 20,. The amount of twist of the blade portions, of course, effects the pitch of the blades.
