SAWING-MACHINE.
Specification of `Letters Patent No. 20,995, dated July 27, 1858.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, W. I-I. Dol/INE and CARLILE MASON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Sawing-Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of our improvement taken in t-he line w, Fig. 8. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of do, taken in the line 1, y, Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of do, the front pair of feed rollers being removed. Fig. 4, is a detached plan view of the levers of one pair of feed rollers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for resawing and is designed chiefly for sawing boards or stulf into weather boards or siding for buildings.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the frame of the machine which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts.
B, is a circular saw, which is placed on a mandrel C, in the upper part of the frame.
D, is the driving shaft which is placed transversely in the lower part of the frame A; motion being communicated to the mandrel C, from the driving shaft by means of belts, intermediate shafts E, F, and gearing On the shaft D, a bevel pinion a, is placed. This pinion gears into a bevel wheel I, which is placed on the lower end of a vertical shaft J. On the upper part of the shaft J, a toothed wheel K, is placed and this wheel gears into a corresponding wheel L, which is placed on a small vertical shaft M. The upper ends of both shafts J, M, have their bearings in a plate N, on the frame A.
The wheels K, L, each gear into two wheels b, 0, which are placed on the lower ends of shafts O. The shafts O, pass through sockets P, which pass through curved slots cl, in the plate N.
On the lower part of each socket P, below the plate N, a bent lever Q, is placed. These levers are allowed to turn freely on the sockets and their inner ends are rounded or made in segment form and toothed, the inner ends of each pair of levers gearing into each other as shown clearly at ax, Fig. 4t. The levers Q, work on the shafts J, M, as centers, and one pair of levers are placed over the other on said shafts, see Figs. 1 and 2.
The upper parts of the shaft O, have each a pin c, passing transversely through it, and the upper end of each shaft O, is rounded or made in semi-spherical form. On each shaft O, a roller R, is fitted. These rollers are hollow at their lower parts and each has a bearing f, to receive the upper rounded end of its shaft O, see Fig. 2. Each roller also has two pendent pins g, g, within it, at opposite sides of its bearing f, and these pins when the rollers are fitted on the shafts O, are at each side of the pins c, the latter serving as drivers. The upper parts of the rollers R, have journals it, formed on them, and these journals are fitted in adjustable bearings S, which are secured to standards R, by setl screws z', the set screws passing through longitudinal slots in the bearings into the standards so that t-he latter may be adjusted as desired. The standards R, and sockets P, may be formed in one piece. The outer ends of each pair of levers Q, are connected by a spiral spring j.
The operation is as follows: Motion is given the shaft D, in any proper way, and the board or stuff to be sawed is placed between the rollers R, which feed the board or stuff, shown in red, to the saw. The board or stuff will be presented centrally to the saw, as the two rollers of each pair are connected by two levers K, and consequently the rollers of each pair will move simultaneously in opposite directions, either toward or from each other. The feed rollers therefore are self-adjustable and boards may be sawed directly through the center. In case it is required to saw boards in taper or beveled form the rollers R, are placed in inclined positions by adjusting the upper bearings S, the lower bearings f, being allowed to turn or move freely on the upper ends of the shafts O. This adjustment of the rollers R, is very essential for weather boards or sidings as they are technically termed are generally sawed in taper form transversely so as to form good lap joints. n
