(Cl. 122 -32) The present invention relates generally to heating apparatus. .More particularly the invention relates to that type of heating apparatus which is designed primarily for use in home or domestic heating and comprises as the main or. essential parts thereof aboiler with a submerged hot water coil in the upper portion of the combined water and steam chamber thereof, a burner in front of the boiler for firing the latter, and a sheet metal jacket which; surrounds the boiler and burner, serves normally to protect as well as conceal theexternally disposed parts of the burner and also the fire and flue doors of the boiler and has hinged doors at the front thereof whereby access may be had to the burner and boiler when desired.
One object of the invention is to provide a heating apparatus of this type which is an improvement upon previously designed apparatus of the same general character by reason of the fact that the ends of the hot water coil in the upper portion of the combined water and steam chamber of the boiler instead of passing either through one of the side walls of the boiler and the contiguous side wall of the jacket or the front wall of the boiler and the jacket front and thus causing disposition of the water inlet and outlet pipes at either the side of the jacket orthe jacket front where they not only would take up space but also might interfere with ready control or adjustment of the boiler and burner, pass through the back wall of the boiler and are there connected by detachable connections to the water inlet and outlet pipes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a heating apparatus of the last mentioned character in which the boiler embodies in the front wall thereof a plate closed opening which is disposed above the fiue door and in substantial registry or horizontal alignment with the hot water coil and upon removal of the plate and also opening of the doors of the jacket and disconnection of the ends of the hot water coil from the inlet and outlet pipes permits the coil tobe removed from the boiler for cleaning or replacement purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a heating apparatus of the type under consideration which is generally of new and improved construction and due to the arrangement and manner of connecting the hot water coil may be installed readily.
Other objects of the invention and the various advantages and characteristics of the present heating apparatus will be apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features which are hereinafter set forth and are more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification or disclosure and in which like .numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:

The heating apparatus which is shown in the drawing constitutes the preferred embodiment of the invention. It is adapted primarily for home or domestic heating and comprises a boiler 5, a burner 6 for firing the boiler, and a sheet metal jacket 1 around the boiler and burner.
The boiler for the most part is of standard or conventional design and embodies an outer shell 8, an inner shell 9, and a hot water coil Ill. The outer shell is fabricated from sheet steel and consists of a pair of side walls II, a front wall I2, a back wall l3, a top I and a bottom l5, and has a combustion chamber IS in the bottom portion thereof. The top H of the outer shell is arched and embodies a steam outlet ll. It extends between and is formed integrally with the upper ends of the sides II and together with the sides serves to hold the front wall and back wall in spaced relation. The inner shell is disposed in the central portion of the outer shell1 and forms within its lower portion the upper part of the combustion chamber Hi. It defines with the top H and the upper portions of the side walls and front and back walls of the outer shell a combined water and steam chamber IS in the upper portion of the boiler and is spaced inwardly from the central portions of the side walls and front and back walls of the outer shell to form a water jacket l9 around the upper portion of the combustion chamber. As shown in Figure 2, this water jacket communicates with the combined water and steam chamber IS in the upper portion of the boiler. The frontwall I2 of the outer shell embodies a pair of vertically disposed substantially rectangular openings 20 and 2| which communicate respectively with the chamber. The opening 23 is disposed in the extreme lower portion of the front wall of the outer shell and is closed by means of a platev 22 which is removably secured in place by means of bolts 23. The upper opening 2i is normally closed by a flre door 24. The inner shell 3, as shown in Figure 2, embodies an upwardly extending enlargement 25 at the rear upper portion thereof. This enlargement communicates with and forms a part of the combustion chamber I6 and is connected by way of horizontally extending flues 26 to a box-like member 21 whichflts against and is secured to the upper portion of the front wall l2 of .the outer shell. The enlargement 25 and the flues 26 are disposed in the combined water and steam chamber I8 and the products of combustion occurring during firing of the boiler flow successively therethrough to the box-like structure 21. From this structure the products of combustion flow rearwards through horizontally extending flues 23 to an externally disposed smoke box 23 on the upper portion of the back wall l3 of the outer boiler shell. The flues 28 'are disposed above the flues 26 and extend between the upper portion of the box-like structure 21 and the back wall I3. The front wall I2 of the outer shell embodies an opening 30 above the fire door 24. This opening communicates with the box-like structure 21 and is normally closed by a flue door 3|. Water is supplied to the combined water and steam chamber I8 by piping, not shown, and is maintained within the chamber at a level slightly beneath the top I4 of the outer shell, as well understood in the art.
The hot water coil I0 is adapted during operation of the boiler to heat water for domestic use. the drawing, and is connected to a storage tank (not shown) by a water inlet pipe 32 and a water outlet pipe 33. The latter are located at the back of the boiler and are vertically ofiset so that during operation of the boiler and resultant heating of the coil I0, water flows from the tank through the pipe 32 and thence through the coil and back to the tank via the outlet pipe 33 as a result of the thermo-siphonic action which takes place. The coil I0 is disposed directly over the fiues 28 and is located at such a level within the combined water and steam chamber I3 that it is fully and completely immersed in the water. The ends of the coil are disposed adjacent to the back wall I3 of the outer shell of the boiler and are connected to the pipes 32 and 33 by detachable connections 34. These connections comprise coupling sleeves 35 and nuts 36. The sleeves extend through holes' 31 in the back wall I3 of the outer shell of the boiler and have internal screw threads 38 in the outer or rear ends thereof forconnection to external screw threads on the water inlet and outlet pipes 32 and 33. The inner or front ends of the sleeves surround and are welded or otherwise fixedly secured to the ends of the hot water coil Ill and have outwardly extending annular flanges 39. The nuts 36 are mounted on external screw threads 40 on the outer ends of the coupling sleeves and when tightened draw the sleeves rearwards and bring the flanges 33 into clamped relation with the back wall of the outer shell of the boiler. Sealing washers 4I extend around the central portions of the sleeves and form water tight joints between the flanges 33 and the hole forming portions of the back wall I3.

This opening is normally closed The latter is removably secured in place by means of nut equipped studs 44 which are anchored in or suitably secured to the portion of the front wall I2 which defines the opening 42. A rectangular gasket 43 fits between the margin of the plate and the adjacent opening forming portion of the front wall I2 and forms a fluid tight joint whereby water in the chamber I8 is prevented from leaking .from the outer shell via the opening 42 when the plate 43 is in place. The opening 42 is preferably pofrom the pipes 32 and 33 may be readily sprung or urged inwards so as to' reduce the width of the coil and thus permit the coil to pass readily through the opening 42. By having the ends of the hot water coil I0 connected to the water inlet and outlet pipes at the back of the boiler the sides and front of the boiler are free from obstruction by pipes and fittings.
The burner 6 is shown in the drawing as being of the oil variety. It is disposed in front of the boiler and comprises a motor driven blower 45 and an air discharge duct 46. The duct leads to and extends through a circular hole 41 in the plate 22 and serves during operation of the burner to discharge air into the combustion chamber. In addition to the blower 45 the burner includes any suitable type of oil pump and atomizer for mixing. oil or oil vapor with the air to form a combustible fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Whereas the burner has been described as being an oil burner it is to be understood-that the heating apparatus may be flred by a gas burner or an automatic stoker device.
The jacket 1 surrounds the boiler and burner and constitutes a protective housing or casing therefor. It is fabricated from sheet metal and consists of a pair of side walls 48, a top 49, and a back 50. The sides are arranged in parallel relation and extend forwardly from the back of the boiler a sufllcient distance to encase or enclose the burner 6. The top 49 extends between and serves to space the upper margins of the side walls 48 and embodies a central hole 5| for the steam outlet I1. The back 50 extends between the rear side margins of the sides and embodies a single rectangular opening 52 through which the smoke box 29 and the water inlet and Outlet pipes 32 and 33 extend. The front of the jacket is closed by means of a pair of doors 53. These doors are hinged to the front side margins of the sides and are adapted when in their closed position together with the side walls,
in top and back of the jacket completely to encase the boiler and burner. The jacket serves not only as a closure for the boiler and burner but also to protect as well as conceal the externally disposed parts of the burner and also the fire and flue doors of the boiler. As shown in Figure 1 of the drawing the doors extend from the top of the jacket to the jacket bottom. Because of this the opening 42 for use in removing the coil I0 is exposed when the doors are in their open position. As a result of the arrangement of the hot water coil I0 and the manner in which it is mounted, it is not necessary to dispose the water inlet and outlet pipes at the sides or front of the jacket where they would not only detract from the appearance as a whole but also obstruct or interfere with ready control and adjustment of the boiler and burner. In addition it is not necessary to cut or form holes in the side walls of the jacket or the doors 53. 'When these doors are in their open position the plate closed opening 42 is exposed and upon removal of the plate 43 from the opening and disconnection of the ends of the coil ill, the coil may be removed as may, if desired, be placed with the back wall of the jacket in substantially abutting relation with one of the walls of the furnace room'of the home or dwelling in which the apparatus is employed.
Whereas the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the. drawing and herein described involves a home heating type of boiler together with an oil burner for firing it and also .lnvolves a hot water coil which is associated with a storage tank and is disposed within the chamber l8 so that it is fully immersed in the water in such chamber, it is to be understood that the invention is capable of embodiment in hot water heaters and also boilers of other types which are fired or heated by gas, pulverized fuel, or solid fuel, as well as oil, and in addition that the hot water coil l0 may be of the instantaneous type, that is, of the type which is used without a storage tank and may be either partially submerged in the water in the chamber or arranged so that it is wholly surrounded by steam.
It is also to be understood that the invention is not to be restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A heating apparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upperv portion and also having an opening in the upper part of the front wall communicating with the last mentioned chamber and a removable plate for closing said opening, a domestic hot water coil in the combined water and steam chamber insertable into place through said opening and having the ends thereof leading through a boiler wall other than the front wall and connected to" such wall by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof the coil may be removed through said opening for cleaning or replacement purposes, a burner in front of the boiler for firing the latter, and-a jacket surrounding. the boiler and burner and having door means at its front adapted upon opening thereof to expose the plate.
2. A heating apparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear, and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upper portion and also having an opening in the upper part of the front wall communicating with the combined water and steam chamber and a removable plate for closing said opening, fa domestic hot water coil in said combined water and steam chamber insertable into place through said opening and havingthe ends thereof leading through the back wall of the boiler and connected thereto by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof the coil may be removed through said opening for cleaning or replacement purposes, aburner in front of the boiler for firing the latter, and a jacket surrounding the boiler and burner and having door means at its front adapted upon opening thereof to exposethe plate.
3. A heating apparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear, and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upper portion, and also having an opening in the upper part of the front wall communicating with the combined water and steam chamber and a removable plate for closing said opening, a domestic hot water coil in said combined water and steam chamber in substantial registry with the opening insertable into place through said opening, and having the ends there-' of leading through the back wall of the boiler and connected thereto by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof the coil may be removed through said opening, a burner in the front of the boiler for firing the latter, and a jacket around the boiler and burner embodying sides and a top and back and having door means adapted to close the front thereof and upon opening to expose the plate in the upper part of the front wall of the boiler.
4. A heating apparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upper portion, and also having a horizontally elongated opening in the upper part of the front wall communicating with the combined water and steam chamber and a removable plate for closing the opening, a substantially horizontal domestic hot water coil of slightly greater width than the opening disposed in said combined water and steam chamber and having the ends thereof arranged to define its sides and leading to and detachably connected to the back wall of the boiler and adapted upon detachment thereof from the back wall to be sprung inwards so as to reduce the width of the coil and permit the latter to be removed through the opening, a burner in front of the boiler for firing the latter, and a jacket surrounding the boiler and burner and having door means at its front adapted upon opening thereof to expose the plate.

A heating apparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upper portion, and also 4 aooaaaa steam chamber in substantial alignment with said opening and having the ends thereof leading through and connected detachably to the back wall of the boiler and adapted upon detachment thereof from the back wall to be sprung. inwards so as to reduce the width of the coil and permit the latter to be removed through the opening, a burner in front of the boiler for firing the latter,
and a jacket surrounding the boiler and burner and having door means at its front adapted upon opening thereof to expose the platen 8. In a heating apparatus of the character described, the combination of a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a combustion chamber in the bottom portion thereof and a combined water and steam chamber in its upper portion and also having an exteriorly disposed smoke box at the upper portion of the back wall and a plate closed opening in the upper part of the front wall communicating with the combined water and steam chamber, a domestic hot water coil disposed in the last mentioned chamber in substantial alignment with the opening and having the ends thereof leadingthrough the back wall of the boiler-at a point above the smoke box and connected to the back wall by detachable connections and adapted by way of, said connections for attachment to water inlet and outlet pipes at the back of the boiler and upon detachment to permit the coil to be shifted forwards and removed through said opening, a burner in front of the boiler for firing the latter, and a jacket around the boiler and burner embodying sides and a top and a back wall between the rear margins of the sides and the top and with a single opening therein for accommodating the smoke box and said water inlet and outlet pipes, and provided with door means at its front adapted upon opening thereof to expose the plate closed opening.

A boiler comprising in combination an outer shell embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a horizontally elongated opening in the upper part of the front wall, an inner shell disposed in the central portion of the outer shell and defining with the latter a combustion chamher in the lower portion of the boiler and a combined water and steam chamber in the upper portion of the boiler, a plate for closing said opening secured removably to the front wall of the outer shell, and a domestic hot water coil in the combined water 'and'steam chamber insertable into place through said opening and having the ends thereof leading through the back wall ofthe boiler and connected thereto by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof and removal of the plate the coil can be removed through the opening. a

A heatingapparatus comprising in combination a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having an opening in the upper part of the front wall, and also having a combustion chamber in thelower portion thereof and a water heating chamber above the combustion chamber and in communication with the opening, removable means for closing said opening, and a domestic hot water coil in the water heating chamber insertable into place through. said opening and having end parts leading through a boiler wall other thanthe front wall and connected to such wall by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof and removal of the closin means the coil can be removed through the opening.
9. A heating apparatus comprising in combination. a boiler embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having an opening in the upper part of its front wall, and also having a combustion chamber in the lower portion thereof and a water heating chamber above the combustion chamber and in communication with the opening, removable means for closing said opening, and a domestic hot water coil in the water heating chamber insertable into place through the opening and having end parts leading through the back wall and connected thereto by detachable connections so that upon detachment thereof and removal of the closing means the coil may be removed through said opening.
10. A heating apparatus comprising in combination a shell embodying side, front, rear and top walls and having a horizontally elongated opening in the'upper part of the front wall, and also having a combustion chamber in the lower .part thereof and a water heating chamber above WILLIAM ANDERSON.
