IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,900, dated November 12, 1878; application tiled October 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT KoMP, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Frames, which invention is fully set forth in the following' specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front view of a frame containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof.

My invention is especially adapted to embossed pasteboard picture-frames. Frames of this class, as hitherto made, are liable to warp and become unsightly after short use; and the object of my invention is to produce an embossed pasteboard frame adapted to retain its original shape or stiffness, and at the same time to firmly support a picture.
My invention consists in combining, with an embossed pasteboard picture-frame having a countersunk opening to czlipose the picture, a dish shaped pasteboard back, which is cemented to the frame over the opening, in such a manner that the frame is stitf'ened thereby, and the picture is firmly retained inA position.
In the drawings, the letter A Vdesignates a pasteboardembossed frame, and B is the opening of the frame through which the picture is shown, the edges of' this opening being countersunk. O is a back combined with the frame A according to my invention. This back O, like the frame, is made of pasteboard, and it is dish-shaped, while it is secured to the rear surface of the frame, adjacent to the opening' B, as at D, by a suitable cement, so that saiduback is brought over the opening.
The effect of countersinking the edges of the opening B is to stiften such edges, so that they are not liable to break, and also to give a good effect to the frame.
By means of the back O the body of the frame is stilfened, so that the same is not liable to warp, while the cavity ofthe back is adapted to receive a picture, which, when the back is fastened, is not only firmly held in place, but is heldin proper relation to the opening ot' the frame. v
The picture E may be placed in position before the back C is cemented to the frame; orone edge of the back can be left detached to permit of introducing the picture, and such edge of the back fastened after the picture has l been introduced; or a slit may be formed in one-of the edges or sides of' the cavity ot' the back for this purpose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with an embossed pasteboard picture-frame having a countersunk opening to expose the picture, ot' a dish-shaped pasteboard back cemented to the frame over the opening, to stiften the same and support the picture, substantially as shown and described. .t
