(c1. 1an- 390) This invention relates to flat car underfraine structures or the like for railway cars, and is particularly directed to the stake pockets and the arrangement and manner or" forming and attaching said stake pockets to the underframe structure, and is a division of our copending application entitled Welded car underfrarne, filed December 29, 1934, Serial No. 759,704.
The stake pockets for receiving the lower ends of the stakes in position in spaced relation along the sides and ends of the car have been formed heretofore of cast or pressed metal and usually attached to the fiat side surfaces of the side or end sills oi the car underfrarne by means of bolts or rivets. When the car is loaded the stake pockets are subjected to enormous strain produced by the leverage pressure of the lading on the extending stakes of the car, which results in the connections of the stake pockets with the underirame becoming loose, or the stake pockets breaking oli. The loosening of the stake pockets further has the disadvantage oi allowing moisture to collect around the bolted or riveted connections thereby allowing corrosion to set in very rapidly.
One of the objects of our invention relates to forming the stake pockets of rolled sheet metal adapted to be attached directly to the car underfranie by welding.

A further object oi our invention resides in the manner of reinforcing the intermediate portion of the stake pocket.
Another object of our invention is to provide a stake pocket that can be attached to a flanged or flat surface of the car underfrarne.
Having thus given a general description of the objects of our invention we will now in order to make the invention more clear refer to the accompanying two sheets of drawings which form a part of this specification and on which like characters of reference indicate like parts;
Figure 1 is a top plan view of slightly ino-re than one-half of a car underframe illustrating the application of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan View of a portion 50 or" a car side sill with one of our improved stake pockets attached thereto drawn on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the portion shown in Fig. 2 taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the enlarged portion shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the end sill taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the various characters of reference on the drawings the numeral I indicates the car underframe as a whole, 2 the center sills, 3 the side sills, l the bolster, 5 the cross ties or bearers and 6 a cover plate attached to the top edge of the end sill 1 and adapted to extend inwardly therefrom and provided with a flanged edge as at 8, the lower end of which is bent inwardly at right angles thereto and adapted to form a seat for supporting the end of the car floor.
As illustrated in the drawings the side sills S are constructed of rolled I-sections with flanges 9 extending laterally therefrom along the top and bottom edges, although these side sill members may be of other section, as channels, Z-bars, or angles, or they may be made of pressed or of cast metal if desired without departing from the spirit of our invention. 4
The stake pockets attached to the side sills 3 of the underfrarne at spaced intervals are formed of rolled pressed sheet metal, each having a U-shaped portion I forming the stake pocket, the legs Il of which are parallel for a portion of their length and connected together by a reinforcing rib I2, which is welded to the legs il as at i3. The ends of the legs ll are formed with outwardly inclined or splayed extensions lll having their ends welded to the web of the side sill as at I5. The upper surfaces of the leg extensions I4 are inclined, or shaped to conform to the contour of the underside of the upper outwardly extending liange of the side sill and is welded thereto as at I6.
ln forming the extensions i4 of the legs splayed in the manner shown, a more desirable bracing effect is obtained than if the legs were made straight for the entire length. To further stiien and brace the stake pockets laterally, brackets i? formed vof plate metal are welded to the opposite sides of the pockets at an intermediate point as at I8, the inner ends of said brackets being welded as at I9 to the top of the side sills 3. By this construction a very strong and rigid construction is obtained, the stake pockets being substantially integrally connected to the side sills will not become loose and allow moisture to collect and produce corrosion between the connections as in the case where bolts or rivets are used.
The stake pockets 20 at the ends of the car are formed and attached in a somewhat diierent manner. These stake pockets are U-shaped, the legs being parallel to each other throughout their entire length. The ends of the legs are welded as at 2| directly to the inner face ofthe end sill 1, the rear end of the stake pockets engaging the vertical wall of the flange 8 of the cover plate 6 and welded thereto as at 22.
In this construction a very rigid connection is obtained and the stake pockets are securely held in position between the rear wall of the end sill 'I and the vertical wall of flange 8. The sides of the openings 23 in the cover plate 6 further help to support the stake when in position.
As illustrated the stake pockets are formed of pressed metal, but they can be formed of cast metal if desired and then welded to the underframe in the manner above described.
Although we have shown and described our invention in considerable detail, we do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, but may use such substitutions, modications or equivalents thereof, as are embraced within the scope of our invention, or as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A car underframe, the combination with the end sill, of U-shapecl stake pockets formed of pressed plate metal having the edges of its legs welded to the inner side of the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom over the top ends of the stake pockets and welded thereto, and a ange extending downwardly from the inner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill and welded to the back of each stake pocket.
2. A car underfrarhe, the combination with the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom, a ange extending downwardly from theinner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill, and a U-shaped stake pocket interposed between the inner side of the end sill and the flange of the cover plate, said stake pocket being welded to the inner surface of the end sill and the flange Y of the cover plate.
3. A car underframe, the combination with the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom, a ange extending downwardly from the inner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill, U-shaped stake pockets interposed between the inner side of the end sill and the ilange of the cover plate, said stake pockets being welded to the inner surface of the end sill and the flange of the cover plate, an opening in the cover plate registering with each stake pocket, and a welded connection between the cover plate and the top of the stake pockets.
4. A car underframe, the combination with the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom, a flange extending downwardly from the inner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill, said ilange having its lower end bent inwardly at right angles thereto adapted to form a seat for supporting the end of the car floor, and U- shaped stake pockets interposed between the inner side of the end sill and the flange of the cover plate and welded to the inner face of the end slll and the flange of the cover plate.
5. A car underfrarne, the combination with the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom, a flange extending downwardly from the inner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill, said ilange having its lower end bent inwardly at right angles thereto adapted to stifien the lower edge of the ange and form a seat for supporting the end of the car floor, U--shaped stake pockets interposed between the inner side of the end sill and the ange ofthe cover plate having the ends of their legs welded to the inner surface of the end sill, and a welded connection between the stake pockets and the cover plate and its flanged edge.
6. A car underfrarne, the combination with the end sill, a cover plate secured to the top of the end sill and extending inwardly therefrom, a flange extending downwardly from the inner edge of the cover plate in spaced relation with the end sill, said flange having its lower end bent inwardly at right angles thereto adapted to stilfen the lower edge of the ange and form a seat for supporting the end of the car floor, U-shaped stake pockets interposed between the inner side of the end sill and the flange of the cover plate, said stake pockets being welded to the inner surface of the end sill and the flange of the cover plate, an opening in the cover plate registering with each stake pocket, a welded connection between the cover plate and the top of each stake pocket, and a welded connection between each stake pocket and end sill and the ange of the cover plate.
