UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIoE.
ADAM I1. SIERER, OF MEUHANICSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,719, dated November 5, 1878'; application filed September 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM L. SIERER, of Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Driers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 3 3 Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the trays with the porous cloth removed therefrom. Fig. 4. is a plan of the same containing the porous cloth, and Fig. 5 is an end view of my invention.
My invention has for its object to provide an apparatus for drying fruit, said apparatus consisting of an open metallic frame holding trays, and adapted to be used in a stove, range, or baking-oven, thereby dispensing with and saving the expense of a separate heat-generator. Or, in other Words, my invention has for its object to use an ordinary house stove, range, oven, or furnace for drying fruit, so as to avoid the outlay necessary for a fruit-drier having its own furnace.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A indicates a skeleton-frame, consisting of two open sides, B B, held parallel by transverse front and back rods-O 0, provided with inner and outer nuts, 0 and 0, respectively. The sides B B are formed with ledges or ways b 12, adapted to receive trays D D. Said trays consist of the bottoms d (1, formed with openin gs d d, with the side and end pieces d and d E E are sheets of porous cloth, of such size as to fit snugly between the sides and ends 01 d and cover the bottoms d. F is a bail for the frame A, consisting of a wooden handpiece, f, having sockets f f in either end, with pins ff passing through said sockets, for the attachment and swiveling of rods f f formed with hooked ends ff. Said ends ff are adapted and designed to engage with the sides B B at or about the points 00 a, the bail F thus affording means of lifting the frame A, as occasion may require.
ter to be left partly open. The heat of the oven can pass in freely tothe fruit on all sides through the open ends and the sides B. It
can also pass through the open bottoms d andporous cloths E, thus ascending from one tray to another. The moisture expelled from the fruit in like manner will find free egress from the trays D and frame A in every direction, making its exit finally from the oven through the open door of the latter. Where an oven or like heat-chamber is not accessible for use, the fruit may be dried by placing the frame on the top of a stove. In every case the trays may be transposed, as occasion requires.
I am aware that fruit-driers having open or partly-open frames and movable trays are not broadly new but those in use are not adapted to be placed inside an ordinary oven, so that the heat from a stove or range may be utilized.
My drier difi'ers from those heretofore employed in that its frame is made entirely of metal, so that it cannot be injured by the heat; that it is open 011 all sides, so as to allow a free and full circulation of heated air and that in size, form, and details of construction it is adapted to general household use as a ready and convenient utensilL What I claim as my invention is- 1. The metallic skeleton-frame A, consisting of parallel open'sides B B, having tray ledges or ways I) b, and held by transverse rods or cross-pieces G O, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of metallic skeletonframe A, having open sides B B, held parallel by transverse rods 0 O, and formed with ledges or ways I) b, with sliding trays D, having open bottoms d and porous cloth sheets E E, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of September, 1878.
