Application March 31 1936, serial No. 71,908
s claims. V(c1. 12o- 93) 'Ihe invention relates to a pencil sharpener and has for its primary object a Sharpener which accommodates a safety razor blade which is held in such a manner that it may be adjusted without removal of the blade to vary the position of the cutting edge in relation to the pencil to be sharpened.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a Sharpener of this character, wherein the conical shaped thimble which accommodates the end of the pencil to be sharpened is removably fitted upon a cover to a container for trapping the shavings when the pencil is being sharpened, the Sharpener being of novel construction and is unique in accommodating a safety razor blade which is readily renewable at the will of the user of the sharpener.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a Sharpener of this character, which is extremely simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, durable, strong, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred'embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a Sharpener constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2, of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional View on the line 4 4 of vFigure 1 looking inthe direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional View similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of sharpener. v
Figure 6 is a view looking toward the inner face of the lid or cover carrying the Sharpener shown in Figure 5. y
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, particularly Figures l to 4 inclusive, the Sharpener comprises a conical shaped member or thimble I6 open at opposite ends and having a slot II longitudinally extended therethrough while at one side of Vthis slot I I is alaterally extending flat wing I2 forming a guard for a safety razor blade I3, its cutting edge I4 being in confronting relation to the slot II and extends sufficiently with respect thereto to function as a cutter for the end of a pencil when the said end of the latter is inserted Within the thimble or member I0 forsharpening purposes. Y
The wing I2 is adaptedV for detachable connection with the cover I5 of a container I5 preferably of cylindrical form and the latter is adapted to catch shavings during the sharpening operation of the pencil. This lid or cover I5 is formed with a slot I'I companion to the slot II of the thimble or conical member I0 so that the shavings will pass through the slot I'I and become deposited within the container I6 when the lid ror cover is Wearing the sharpener.
Struck outwardly from the lid or cover is a framing bead I8 constituting a seat for the wing I2 and thus in this manner enabling the quickv matching of the slots II and II with each other when the Wing I2 is seated upon the lid or cover,Y
a fastener I9 detachably secures the Sharpener L in place and also adjustably holds the blade I3 located between the wing I2 and the lid or cover I5.
The pencil to be sharpened at the end for sharpening is rst inserted into the corneal member or thimble II) then by a twisting action the blade will cut the pencil for the sharpening thereof and the shavings will be deposited in the container I6. w
In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification of the Sharpener wherein the lid or cover 2li has an opening 2I accommodating a cameo face 22 formed on the bot-Y tom side of the Sharpener 23 while at oppositeY ends and one side of this opening 2l is an instruck bead 24 in the lid or cover 20 and attached by a clamping plate 25 and a fastener 2B to the wing 21 of the Sharpener 23 is the safety razor blade 28. The Sharpener 23 is made secure in proper position upon the lid or cover 20 by rivets or fasteners 29 thus such lid or cover and the Sharpener are unitary or permanently joined with each other.
What is claimed is: Y
1. A Sharpener of the kind described comprising a conical shaped member having a longitudinal slot therein, a lateral wing extending from said member at one side of the slot, a container Vlid having an opening matching the slot in said member, a safety razor blade detachably fitted with said wing for presenting a cutting edge to the slot in said member, and a seat formed in the lid for said wing and blade.
Cil
2. A Sharpener of the kind described comprising a conical shaped member having a longitudinal slot therein, a lateral wing extending from said member at one side of the slot, a container said Wing', a container, a lidk for said container lid having an opening matching the slot in said having a slot matching the slot in said member, member, a safety razor blade detachably fitted a seat on said lid for guiding said Wing and blade with said wing for presenting a cutting edge tointo proper position whereby the slots in said 5 the slot in said member, a seat formed in the lid member and in said lid are in registry and the 5 for said Wing and blade, and means for adjustably cutting edge of the blade is presented to said slots, clamping the blade with respect to said wing. and means cooperating with said seat for detach- 3.
