Description
0a. 19, 1937. s. M. ROTH 2,096,262
AIR FILTER Filed March 27, 19555 nun-"unlu- "1"",
Patented Oct. 19, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
My invention relates to air temperature controlling and filtering apparatus for heaters for automobiles, etc.
One of. the objects of my invention is to provide an apparatus for use in automobiles, etc., in which a heater with a fan air circulating system is used and in which air will not only be used to control the temperature of the car, but also in which the air will be filtered as it is being circulated. The circulation of the air has a tendency to stir up dust, etc., as it circulates, and it is one of the objects of my invention to obviate the disagreeable and harmful effects resulting therefrom.
- It is a further object of my invention to provide 'an apparatus of the character indicated, in which the filter material may be easily removed and replaced.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
In the drawing, in which an embodiment, of. my invention is shown,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hot water heater and filtering apparatus mounted in the rear of the dash of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the segments of the filter; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the filter construction.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the construction shown comprises a hot water radiator I having upper and lower conduits 2 and 3 for connection with the upper and lower portion of an automobile radiator, respectively, extending through the dash of the automobile 4 and serving to support the heater on the dash, a casing 5 surrounding the radiator I, having an air outlet in the rear of the radiator and an air inlet in front of. the radiator, adjustable damper means 6 for controlling the air outlet, a fan I in front of the radiator for forcing air through the radiator and air outlet, an electric motor 8 in front of the fan on the shaft of which the fan is mounted, means 9 for supporting the motor 8, and an air filter in extending across the air inlet for filtering the air before it flows through the radiator.
As shown in Fig. 2, this air filter is annular in form and is shaped to fit over the motor casing. It comprises a plurality of arcuate segments ll so that the segments can be readily removed and replaced simply by slipping them in and out of the space between the air inlet l2 and the motor support 9, the segments being trictlonally he]: or otherwise suitably secured in position.
The material used in the filter may be steel wool l3 dipped in light oil and held in place between a pair of light open-work retaining members H which may be of woven wire or any suitable retaining material which will enable the air to pass readily therethrough.
In use, when the fan is in motion, it forces air through the radiator l, drawing it in through the filter Ill so that the air is thoroughly cleaned before it passes through the radiator and out through the shutter in the rear.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
