Description

Sept. Z8, 1937. v. RAGO TArLoRs CHALK SHARPENER Filed July 5, 1935 l//NcE/v T RA G o ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 28, 1937 UNITED STATES' NT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved tailors chalk Sharpener, and the present invention constitutes an improvement over my Tailors chalk sharpener for which I have previously made application for patent, the same being designated as Serial No. 750,402, and filed on October 29, 1934, Patent Number 2,922,299, Nov. 26, 1935.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide an improved chalk Sharpener of this type wherein the material and shavings scraped oli by the sharpening blade will be automatically delivered to the rear of the face of the surface which supports the sharpening blade and then dropped to the container portion or receptacle of the device.
Another object of the invention is the provi- Sion of an apparatus from which the shavings or scrapings can be more readily emptied and which can be more economically and satisfactorily constructed.
A still further object is to provide a sharpening device of the class described which can be used in any position such as, for example, when hanging on a wall or when laid flat on a shelf or bench, or which can be operated simply while being held in the hand of the user, all with equally satisfactory results.
Another and still further important object of the invention is to provide, in a tailors chalk Sharpener, means which will afford a guide or limiting guard whereby the sharpening of the chalk or other element can be accomplished at a correct and desired angle in a practically automatic manner.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawing and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved tailors chalk Sharpener of this invention, showing particularly the slots or openings adjacent the sharpening blade.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 5 is a detail view, parts being broken away, of that portion of the casing which supports the sharpening blade, showing particularly the slots adjacent the blade, and viewing the same along the line 5 5 of Figure 4 and in the direction indicated.
As shown in the drawing:
rlhe reference numeral I9 indicates generally the casing or body of the improved tailors chalk Sharpener of this invention, the same preferably comprising a single sheet of metal or other suitable or desired material cut to shape and then folded into the box-like form illustrated.
The front face of the casing is provided with a vertically extending opening or slot I2, this being provided by bending back or inwardly that portion lil of the front face which is best shown in Figures l, 2, and 4.
An opening it is made in this face, and a sharpening blade i8 is positioned across the opening, this being mounted in suitable supports 29 and 22 at each side or end thereof as best illustrated in Figures l and 2 respectively, and also shcwnin plan view in Figure 4. The fact that the blade i8 is positioned across a medial line of the opening iii provides ample space for all scrapings or shavings from the chalk to be pushed rearwardly or fall down beneath the blade I8 and into the lower portion of the compartment which is adapted for the receiving and containing of these scrapings and shavings until such time as they are emptied through the opening 24 at the top of the device. This opening is formed by cutting away a portion of the cover 26 as best shown in Figure 3.
Another means of emptying the scrapings and shavings is provided, this being in the nature of an extrusion or extension of the body as shown at 28 which is adjacent the bottom of the slot i2 and which, in addition to providing a simple means of emptying collected debris, also makes the device more ornamental and attractive simply from an appearance standpoint.
A further extension 36 is provided on the body or casing, the same having an opening 32 therein by means of which the device can be hung on a nail or hook, if desired.
It will be seen that herein is provided a vdevice which, in addition to presenting the advantages disclosed in my aforementioned application for patent, will also include structure whereby a much cleaner sharpening job will result and a more thorough collection of the scrapings and shavings, which will eliminate undesirable dropping of the same onto the floor or other objects, and in addition, a gauge for producing the required angle on the chalk is provided in the form on otherwise than as necessitated by the priorV art.
I claim as my invention:
A chalk Sharpener, including a casing having a slot in its face, an extension of the casing behind the slot and a sharpening blade positioned in another slot in the extension, one of the outer Walls Vof the casing being in-turned adjacent the slot to form a further Wall therefor, and a slot in the irl-turned Wall across which the sharpen- Ying blade extends, and means at the bottom of the casing for collecting scrapings and shavings, together with two separate and individual openings for emptying said scrapings from the casing, one of said openings being at the top of the casing and the other opening being formed from a semi-cylindrical protuberance at the bottom of the casing adjacent the slot in the face of the casing.
