Description

Sept. 28, 1937. o. R. PENGELLEY RAIL GREASER Filed Nov. 9, 1956 O/ymp uj Pay Patented Sept. 28, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RAIL GREASER Application November 9, 1936, Serial No. 109,846
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in rail greasers and has for its object the construction of a greasing device for elevator guide rails which is simple in construction and entirely automatic in operation.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a rail greasing device which will automatically feed grease to the guide rail as required. This, and other objects of the invention, are accomplished by providing a hollow housing having a closed top and open bottom, a front wall having a forwardly extending portion provided with a slot the full length thereof for receiving the guide rail, a plunger entered in and closing said opening and a base for said plunger.
For a full understanding of my invention, and
the manner in which the same is constructed and operated, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention partly in cross section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the plunger and base.
Figure 4 is an alternative view of the base attached to the closed end of the housing.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawing.
The preferred embodiment of my invention 11- lustrated in the drawing comprises, a rectangular grease containing housing having front and rear walls and side walls, I, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, the top of the housing being closed and the bottom open. The upper end of the front wall is extended outwardly as indicated at 1 and this forward extension is provided with a vertical, central slot 8 for receiving the face and sides of the rail 9. The slot 8 should be of such a size as to permit only a slight clearance of the sides and face of the rail.
The side walls of the forwardly extending por tion I are curved toward the slot 8 for the purpose of forcing the grease onto the side of the rail. The top side of the housing is formed so that it slopes upwardly from the back to the top front edge of the housing for the purpose of forcing grease towards the said slot. A plunger I0 which is enterable into the housing is mounted on a fixed base II, the base being provided and formed with slots l2 to provide adjustable means for attaching the base to the top of the elevator shoe which is indicated at IS. The size of the plunger It) should be such that it will enter the housing so that there will be no binding as between the interior walls of. the housing and the sides of the plunger.
In operation, as indicated in the drawing, the base is mounted on the top of the elevator, or counterbalanced shoes, as already noted, and a stick of grease placed either on the top of the plunger or in the housing.
The housing is mounted on the plunger and the weight of the same forces the grease to and through the slot 8 by means of which it is spread onto the sides and face of the rail 9.
The principal advantage of my invention is that when the elevator is travelling upwards, the downward pressure of the housing on the grease therein will be increased, thereby respectively greasing the sides and face of the rail. A further advantage is that when the elevator car is travelling downwardly, very little grease is applied except at the point where the elevator stops. At the point where the elevator stops, a liberal application ofv grease is effected to replenish the grease removed in the stopping. It will be noted from'the foregoing that the rail greaser which is the subject matter of this application is entirely automatic in operation and thereby the grease in the housing is continually moved towards and through the slot 8 as it is used by the elevator guide rail. It will also be noted that when a car is travelling upwardly if there are any spots on the rail which cause friction, the friction will force the housing downwardly to cause more grease to be forced onto the rail.
It will be apparent that modifications may be made in the preferred embodiment of my invention described herein such as reversing the device and having the hollow housing fixed to the base and the grease forced through the slot 8 by the action of the plunger, the weight of which forces the grease through that slot. This modification is illustrated in Figure 4 in which is shown a type of base suitable for securing the closed end of the housing to the elevator shoe.
These and other modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A rail greaser comprising a fixed plunger, a hollow housing having a closed top mounted on said plunger and vertically movable with respect thereto and a slot in the side of said housing for receiving a guide rail, the weight of said housing and the friction between it and said guide rail co-operating to force grease through said slot.
0. R. PENGELLEY.
