DROP SEAT UNDERGARMENT I Filed March 4, 1937 WITNESSES INVENTOR Patented Sept. 21, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mm SEAT UNDERGARMENT Jack Bernstein, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application March 4, issts eriai No. 128,947
4 Claims.
This invention relates to undergarments, and particularly to a drop seat undergarment, the object being to provide a. construction which is particularly adapted for small children and which while in two pieces functions as a single piece garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment in the nature of union underwear for children wherein the pants part is separate from the shirt part except for a short distance across the front so that the rear and sides of the pants part may act as a drop seat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a child's union undergarment having separate pants and shirt parts connected together at the center of the front with the shirt part cut away at the front and back and presenting depending side members secured to the bottom of'the pants part.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective View of a garment disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the same being illustrated on a figure;
Fig. 2 is a front view on an enlarged scale of the garment shown in Fig. 1, certain parts being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the structure shown in Fig. 2 with the drop seat moved a short distance downwardly;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through Fig. 2 approximately on the line 4-4;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View through Fig. 4 approximately on the line 5--5.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the shirt part and 2 the pants part. The shirt part I is of the usual construction from the waistline upwardly and includes a front section 3, a rear section 4, and suitable shoulder straps 5 and 6. The front and rear sections merge together at the sides and, if desired, the entire shirt part could be made tubular and cut to the shape disclosed in the drawing. From a point slightly below the waistline the front part of the shirt is cut away at l and the rear part is cut away at 8. The line of cutting substantially presents a half circle whereby there will be presented on each side a depending V-shaped extension 9. These extensions project to the leg members I and H as shown in Fig. 4. Suitable stitching I2 is supplied to each of the extensions so as to secure them to the pants part near the lower end. This arrangement permits the seat part [3 of the pants part 2 to swing downwardly from points I4 and [5. This allows an ample downward swinging movement as not only the rear but the sides and some of the front swing with the seat I3.
It will be noted that the pants part 2 is tubular and provided with leg members Ill and -II which may be merely openings or may be complete leg portions. In order to maintain the seat l3 in its raised up position normally, the top or upper end of the pants part 2 is formed with a hem IS in which an elastic strap. l I is mounted. This strap places the upper edge of the pants part under tension and slightly puckers the same as indicated at I8 in Fig. 1. provided in the hem l6 so that the ends 2| and 22 of the elastic may protrude therethrough. These ends are provided preferably with a plurality of buttonholes 23 for receiving the respective buttons 24, which buttons are secured to the hem Hi.
It will also be noted that the lines of stitching 25 extend from point I4 to point l as shown in Fig. l, and this short central connection at the front is the only connection between the pants part and the shirt part, except the stitching l2 at the lower end of extensions 9. From this it will be seen that while the garment is really formed in two parts secured together by stitches 25, it functions as a one piece garment. Also by reason of the cutaway portions 1 and 8 there is no excess shirt material at the front or back inside the pants part, but only suflicient side portions or extensions 9 to provide the desired connection with the sides of the pants part.
I claim:
1. An undergarment comprising separate upper and lower parts, means extending partly across the front of the garment for securing said parts together at the center of the front, said upper part having an upper front section and an upper back section, said sections merging at the sides and extending in a V-shaped formation downwardly to adjacent the lower end of the lower part, said lower part being formed with a tubular body merging into leg openings, the back portion with side portions of said body forming a drop seat, said drop seat swinging from the ends of said means, and stitching connecting the lower end portion of said V-shaped formation to the sides of said body adjacent the lower end of said lower part.
2. An undergarment having a tubular shirt part cut away in an are at the front and back from near the waistline downwardly, the side portion of said shirt part from near the waistline downwardly presenting a V-shaped conformation at the sides below the waistline extending to a point Openings l9 and 20 are near the lower end of the undergarment, a lower pants part having a tubular body formed at the lower end with leg members, said pants part being positioned so that its upper end will be positioned at the waistline of the shirt part, stitching permanently connecting the lower end of said V-shaped conformation to said pants part near the lower edge thereof, means at the front connecting the central front upper edge portion of. the pants part to the front central portion of the shirt part, said means being of less length than the front of the undergarment, said tubular body having a drop seat structure extending from one v buttonholes to hold the strap in functioning position; ,1
end of said means around to the back, across the back and back around to the other end of saidmeans, an elastic supporting member-acting on the upper edge portion of said drop seat for supporting the drop seat, and securing structures for" ing cut away at the back from near the waistline to the bottom of the shirt with substantially arcshaped cuts so as to form V-shaped side extensions extending from near the waistline down to near the lower end of said pants part, stitching connecting permanently the lower ends of the respective extensions to the respective lower ends of the pants part, an elastic strap slidingly conneoted with the upper edge of said drop seat for normally holding the drop seat in a raised position, said strap having a'plurality of buttonholes adjacent each end, and a button positioned near each end of said stitching coacting with said 4. An ,undergarment comprising a shirt part cutaway front and back from near the waistline downwardly to form side V-shaped depending members extending to the bottom of the undergarment, a pants part connected at the center of ;thefront,to the center of the front of said shirt,;subs tantially,at the waistline, the sides and back of the pants part being free of said shirt part and presenting a drop seat, and stitching connecting the lower end portions of said V- shaped depending members to the pants part at the sides thereof near the bottom end.
