Patented Sept.` 21, 1937 PATENT orrlE BAG HANDLE ORNAMENT AND SECURING DEVICE Herman Kluger, New York, N. Y., assignorto Fulford Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application May 24, 1937, `serial No. 144,560
Claims.
'I'hisinvention relates to a bag handle; and v has for one of its objects the provision of an ornamental member which incorporates in a simple construction a securing device for holding 5 the handle in place. v Another object of the invention is the simplification of such ornamental plate and securing device by the forming of the same from a single piece of` material, thus providing a device which is -more simply constructed and also one which is more simply handledin assembling the handle on the bag.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be assembled from the outside of the bag rather than endeavoring to hold a part within .the bag to be secured thereto. v
With these and other objects in view,` the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing: J
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the hand bag equipped with this invention;
Fig. 2 isa section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ornament and securingl device.;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view looking at the opposite side of the device;
Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing a bag handle clamped in position;
Fig. 6 is a perspective View similar to Fig. 4 but showing a modied form in that the shape of the outline of the device is different.
Bag handles are secured in place on bags in various waysl which involve assembly operations of several parts, and compared to the present invention more complicated structures have been used for securely holding `the bag handle in position; and in order to provide a simple construction which will involve fewer assembly operations, I have formed from a single piece of metal the ornament and a clamping means for the handle and also a means for securing this memr bei' on the bag; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
` 90 With reference to the drawing, III designates a hand bag and II a handle which is secured thereto at its opposite end portions I2 and I3. The means for securing these ends to the bag comprise a simple sheet metal structure, as will 5 presently be described.
This sheet metal securing device comprises an ornamental plate or portion I4 having a beveled marginal edge with rearwardly extending flanges along these marginal edges which are designated I5 at the top, I6 at the sides and I'I at the bottom, and from these anges there extend some suitable securing means for mounting the ornament upon the bag II). Spurs I8 are a convenient means for accomplishing this purposeand consist of two such spurs on either side of ange I@ extending rearwardly therefrom. An opening I9 is formed in the plate I4 which is so located as to extend to the marginal edge of the plate III and into the ange I5 by reason of the notch or recess ZI in this flange. I
End portion I2 of the handle extends through this opening I9 which is of a size to snugly t and lie in the notch 2l lforming a part of the opening I9. This end portion I2 is bound rmly in position by a nger 22 which is formed integral with the Iiange Il and has a serrated or notched edge 23 which is curved inwardly as` at 24 so that as it is rolled toward the back of the plate I4 it binds the end portion I2 against the back of Vthe plate I4 and securely locks it in position, see Figs. 2 and 5.
The spurs are passed through the wall 25 of the bag III and bent over as at 2li, see Fig. 2, to hold the device securely in position on the bag and snugly against its outer surface. In order that a more pleasing appearance may be had the flanges I6 may be tapered, as shown `in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5,
with a wider flange II at the bottom and a narrower flange I5 at the top, thus more desirably conforming to a stream line appearance of the anchor for the handle I I than were these flanges of uniform dimension around the periphery of the ornamental plate I4.
It will be readily apparent that the shape of the plate I4 may be varied, one such shape being a circular plate 28, as shown in Fig. 6,` which will have a ange 29 extending therefrom which will be tapered with a wider portion 3Q opposite the edge 3| of the opening 32. The locking iinger 33 will be provided on the edge of the wide portion of` the flange for securing the end of the handle rmly in position. Spurs 34 are formed for holding the device against the bag. i
In assembly, the device with the end of the handle positioned through the opening will be placed against the bag with the spurs protruding through the front wall 25 and then a closing or pressing operation is performed to at one time fold in and secure the nger against the end portion of the handle and the prongs or spurs l I8 against the inner surface of the wall 25 of the bag. By this arrangement anges l5, i6 and Il will lie snugly against the bag closing in and hiding the secured end of the handle to the bag and also providing the necess-ary space for the accommodation of the end of the handle between the front plate Iii and the bag.
'Ihe foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A handle trimming comprising an ornamental plate having an opening therein through which the handle extends, a flange about said marginal edge of said plate, said opening extending to the edge of said plate and into the marginal flange along such edge, a clamping nger integral with said plate for binding the handle to it, and means to secure said plate to a support.
2. In combination with a bag, a handle trimming comprising an ornamental plate having an opening therein, a handle extending through said opening, a ange about the margin-al edge of said plate, said opening extending to the edge of said plate and into the marginal iiange along such edge, a clamping linger integral with said plate for binding the handle to it, and means to secure said plate to a support, said iiange being of relative narrow dimension adjacent said opening and of wider dimension at a point spaced therefrom.
3. In combination with a bag, a handle trimming comprising an ornamental portion having an opening therethrough, a peripheral flange eX- tending rearwardly from said portion with its edge engaging the bag and providing a space for the reception of the handle end, said flange being of relative narrow dimension at one edge and of wider dimension at -a point spaced therefrom, a handle having its end portion extending through said opening and located between said ornamental portion and the bag, a clamping linger integral with said ornamental portion binding the handle in position at the location of the wider dimension of said flange, and means to secure said trimming to said bag.
4. In combination with a bag, a handle trimming comprising an ornamental portion having an opening therethrough, a peripher-al flange extending rearwardly from said portion with its edge engaging said bag and being of somewhat wider dimension at one location to increase the space for the handle, a handle having its end portion extending through said opening and located between said ornamental portion and the bag, and a linger integral with said ornamental portion rolled in the direction of the extent of the handle from said trimming to bind the handle in position at the location of the wider dimension of said ange, and means to secure said trimming to said bag.
5. In combination with a bag, a handle trimming comprising an ornamental portion having an opening therethrough, a peripheral flange extending completely about and rearwardly from said portion with its edge engaging the bag and providing a space for the reception of the handle end, a handle having its end portion extending through said opening and located between Said ornamental portion and the bag, a clamping linger integral with said ornamental portion, I
