UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE Daniel H. Chason, Elizabeth, N. J., assignorto The Singer Manufacturing Company, Elizabeth, La corporation of New Jersey Application July so, 1936, Serial No. 93,360 e Claims.- (01. 223-429) This invention relates to needle-threaders and a plan view of the device, as shown in Fig. l. it has as its primary object to provide a device Fig. 4 is an enlarged left end view of the threader of this nature which is extremely simple in conas shown in Fig. l and Fig. is a View of the struction and which therefore may be manufacsheet-metal blank which constitutes the major 'tui'ed at a minimum of expense; whichwill be element of the threader. 5

In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a side In the course of manufacture of the device elevation of the improved needle-threader, illusthe tab 3 is folded upwardly, along the line intrating its action in threading a sewing machine dicated by a: in Fig. 5 thereby causing the proneedle. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing it being jecting end of the tab to lie alongside the tongue used to thread a hand sewing needle. Fig. 3 is 2. The forward ends of those elements are then spread apart, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 thereby forming between them a substantially U-shaped mouth which receives the point of a sewing machine needle and guards it against contact with the thread during the threading operation. The lower forward edges of the tab and tongue are rounded and thereby facilitate in the drawing of the thread into the threaderhook.
As previously stated, the present improved needle-threader may be used with equal facility in threading either sewing machine needles n, as shown in Fig. 1 or hand sewing needles h, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:
l. A needle-threader comprising a sheet-metal supporting shank provided with a laterally offset head portion formed, at its rear end, with a retaining notch; a bowed spring-metal member having a closed end fitted into said retaining notch and leg portions arranged at opposite sides of said offset head portion and projecting beyond the forward end thereof, the free ends of said leg portions being flared outwardly in opposite directions to form between them a needle-receiving mouth the center of which is located at one side of the center line of said shank; means for securing said head and member together; and a threading hook secured to one side of said shank in line with the center of said needle-receiving mouth.
2. A needle-threader comprising a sheet-metal supporting shank provided with a laterally offset head portion formed, at its rear end, with a retaining notch; a, flatened U-shape spring-metal member having its closed end fitted into said retaining notch and its leg portions arranged at opposite sides of said offset head portion and prow jecting beyond the forward end thereof, the free ends of said leg portions being flared outwardly in opposite directions to form between them a needle-receiving mouth the center of which is located at one side of the center line of said shank; a rivet passing through said head portion and said member, intermediate the ends of the latter, for securing them together; a threading hook secured to one side of said shank in line with the center of said needle-receiving mouth; and means on said shank engaging said hook to limit the movement thereof.
3. A needle-threader comprising a sheet-metal body member provided, adjacent one edge, with a laterally offset head portion formed, at its rear end, with a retaining notch, said body member also being provided adjacent its other edge with a forwardly projecting tongue and a laterally projecting tab, said tab being folded against said body member and the forward ends of said tongue and tab being flared outwardly in opposite directions to form a substantially V-shaped needlepoint receiving mouth; a needle locating element comprising a bowed spring-metal member having its closed end fitted into said retaining notch and its leg portions arranged at opposite sides of said offset head portion and projecting beyond the forward end thereof, the free ends of said leg portions being flared outwardly in opposite directions to form between them a mouth adapted to receive the blade of the needle, the center of said mouth being located at one side of the center line of said body member; means for securing said body member and needle locating element together; a threading hook secured to one side of said body member in line with the center of said needle-receiving throat; and a finger pressed outwardly from said body member and engaging said hook to limit the movement thereof.
