The object of the present invention is to provide a package incorporating a roll of gauze or tissue, whether of paper or cloth, and its primary object is to provide means for maintaining the gauze covered so as to be protected against contamination whilst permitting sections thereof to be unrolled and severed for use.

A further object of the invention is to provide a package of the said type which will permit the free unrolling of a gauze roll without the need of spindles at the ends of the roll.

A further object of the invention is to provide a package consisting of a single blank of cardboard so formed as to enable filling the same with a gauze roll quickly by automatic machinery and which will require no glue or stapling of the protection flap.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention showing the protection flap open exposing the gauze roll and a free end of the gauze.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the flap in closed position.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33, Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is ,a transverse section on the line 44, Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the blank from which the carton is made.

Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the package comprises a bottom wall I, a rear wall 2, a top wall 3 and end walls formed by lateral projections of the bottom, rear and top walls, the front of the carton being partially closed by lips 4:1: carried by the bottom wall extensions 4, the carton being completed by a front wall 5 having a protecting closure flap 5r.

In folding the scored blank as shown in Fig. 5, the rear wall is folded upwardly to vertical position and the lateral extensions 2a: folded inwardly. The top wall. 3 is then folded to horizontal position and its lateral extensions 3x turned downwardly to vertical position over upon the lips 2x. Extensions 4 of bottom wall I are then moved upwardly to vertical position and are glued to extensions 320. In this position of the parts the roll of gauze I may be inserted in the box and the free end la: thereof pulled through the slot 5:21: of top wall 3, whereupon lips 4x may be folded inwardly to hold the gauze roll in position as shown in Fig. 1.

Grasping the exposed free end lzc of the gauze, it may be pulled through the slot 5x50 until the required length is exposed, and then cut off, leaving a narrow section for a succeeding operation. The roll I may freely rotate being held in position by the elements above described. After such operation wall 5 will be moved upwardly and lip 53: tucked into the slot for the exposed end of the gauze as indicated by the two successive positions, Figs. 1 and 2, and by the sectional views of Figs. 3 and 4.

If desired, the lips 4r may be glued to the front wall 5 after the roll of gauze is placed in the package although this is not essential and I prefer that the complete arrangement be as illustrated in Fig. 1. Thus the user may see at a glance the quantity of gauze still left in the roll after a supply thereof has been withdrawn and cut off.

By my invention, a very inexpensive package is provided which enables rapid assembly and the gauze is covered and protected by the act of inserting the cover lip within the slot 5m: through which the gauze is projected for use.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. A package comprising a roll of gauze, tissue or the like, and a cardboard body portion formed with top and bottom walls, rear and end walls, a longitudinal aperture formed in the top wall through which the end of the roll is passed to form a projecting area lying on the top wall, the roll being located within said body portion, and a front wall closure flap. carried by the bottom wall and extending upwardly and having at its upper margin a tongue of a length substantially coextensive with said aperture and the width substantially greater than the distance between the front edge of the top wall and the said aperture, the tongue being thereby adapted tocover said projecting area of the roll and also adapted to enter said longtiudinal aperture of the top wall, and to frictionally engage the top wall rearwardly of the aperture.

2. A package comprising a roll of gauze, tissue or the like, and a cardboard body portion formed with top and bottom walls, rear and end walls, a longitudinal aperture formed in the top wall substantially rearward of its front longitudinal edge and substantially co-extensive therewith, through which aperture the end of the roll is passed to form a projecting area lying parallel with the top wall, the roll being located within said body portion, and a front wall closure flap carried by the bottom Wall and extending upwardly, a tongue connected to the upper margin of the flap and lying parallel with the top wall, said tongue being of a length substantially co-extensive with said aperture and a width substantially greater than the distance between the front edge of the top wall and the said aperture, the tongue surmounting said projecting area of the roll and entering said aperture to project rearwardly thereof in frictional contact with the top wall.
