Application July 26, 1929, Serial No. 381,136 Renewed September 2, 1932 12 Claims.
This invention relates to a machine for sharpening or honing safety razor blades.
The principal `feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for honing or sharpening a safety razor blade by maintaining the same in contact with a vibratory honing or sharpening element.
Another feature resides in the particular form of mechanism employed to impart a vibratory motion to the honing element.
Other features of the invention and the full nature thereof will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:
Fig. 1 is a cross section showing the principal parts of the apparatus in detail. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
A housing I0 is provided with a cover I I hinged thereto at I2 and fastened thereto when closed by fastening members I3. Within the housing I0 is provided a vibratory solenoid I4 of any common form adapted to impart vertical vibratory movement to a plunger or armature I5. Herein the said vibratory solenoid is shown as consisting of a central sleeve 3 I, end members 32 forming with the said sleeve a spool upon which a suitable winding 33 is wound and a stationary 30 core 34 threadedly engaged in the lower end of the sleeve 3|. A support member I6 is suitably fastened within the housing Il] and carries downfolded portions II in turn carrying a pair of transverse rivet pins I8. Each of the pins I8 pivotally supports a pair of lever members I9 projecting upward through openings 20 in the member I6. At the upper end of the lever members I9 are formed socket portions ZI for the reception of a pair of sharpening or honing elements 22. The lower arms of the lever members I9 pivotally engage a pin 23 passing through the upper end of the plunger I 5. Thus, the vertical vibratory motion of the plunger I5 imparts horizontal vibratory motion to the honing elements 22.
Carried on the support member I6 is a plurality of pins 24 adapted to engage the usual openings in a safety razor blade 25. On the underside of the cover II is carried a blade-engaging member 26 carrying openings 21 for the admission of the upper ends of the pins 24. In placing a razor blade in position for sharpening, the cover is opened, the blade is placed in position with the openings therein engaging the pins 24 and the cutting edges engaging the sharpening elements. The cover is then closed bringing the member 26 into engagement with the razor blade to hold it in position. Power is then applied to the solenoid by means of electric connections 28 and an electric switch 29 contained within the housing IB and operated by a knob 3E! projecting therefrom.
While the preceding specications describe a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that several variations from the details thereof may be made without departing from the broader features of the invention. As an example, either the well known alternating current vibratory solenoid or a direct current solenoid of the make and break type may be used. Certain features of the invention are not dependent upon the use of a vibratory solenoid since any other suitable source of vibratory motion may be used therewith.
The invention claimed is:
