Referring flrstof all to." Figs. 1r,,2;.31and 4;. The 4 material from which and which'has been designated i as it is being fed to the. machine is tubed. as shown; in. Fig. 2.. This tubing mechanism hasnotibeen illustrated in. detail as the same mercialv apparatus and its details are not claimed herein. It will be seen... however, from Figs. 1
and. 2; that the. materiat is: tubed' about; a cut-oil. 2. This plate is. athin. flat plate, designated "plate: witl'r. upper and. lower plane. faces; and is adapted to be reciprocatedlengthwise of the? the bags. are to be mademay be well known commachine: intimed. rel'atiiniv with. the other mechanism. of. the machine. as be bropght out fully-hereinafter: The'cut-ofl' plate is adapted to be: advanced in the direction of the travel of the materiala I by cut-oil blades or cutters 3 and 4 mounted in. cut-off rollers: 5 and 6, respectively. The plate is retracted by a lever I pivoted at 8, one end of" this lever extending through the tail of the cut-oflplate as shown at 9.
The: plate engaging end of the retracting lever is positively actuated by cam in driven by a chain il for instance, it being understood, of course, that this cam or eccentric I0 is driven in timed relation with the rest of the machine so that the cut-oil plate 2 will be retracted in the proper timed relation to the'operation of the cut-oflf blades or knives 3 and 4.
Between. the tall or rear end of the cut-oi! plate 2 and the cut-on. rollers 5 and 6 forwarding rollers i! are provided. The function of these forwarding rollers is to advance the tubed material continuously through the machine to the .cut-ofl. rollers.
The cutters 3 and 4 are set into the face of the rollers 5 and 8, respectively, and held in place face oi.v each rollerbeside the cutter.
The cutters. project slightly from the periphcry of the rollers" 5 and 8 and it will be appreciated that when the cut-oi! plate 2 is not being advanced by the; cutters: 3 and. 4 and the lands 14 it is free to be: retracted positively by the retracting lever 1".
we set the cut-oil! rollers with respect to each other so thatthe cutter 3, for example, will perform its cuttingoperation ahead of the cutter 4, thereby providing a projecting flap on the lower wall of" the bag material. (.ibviously this orders-of operation. of the cutters may be reversed. The" cute-oflrollers are adjustable circumferentiallyso as to'vary' the operation of the knives or cutters! andl.
We. wish to note that the cutters 3 and 4 are smooth edged, that" is to say, are not serrated and are curved as viewed in plan, as illustrated in 'Fig. 2, for instance.
It will be appreciated that when the leading terial with a smooth rolling pinch cut. This cut is shown. in Fig; 4 and-designated 2. The cut extends transversely of the tube from a point adiacent oneed'ge-of the tube to a point adjacent the opposite edge. At this time the cu't-ofi plate is bearing against the land H in the upper cut-off roller 6 so as to be carried forward or advanced at cutter speed during the cutting operation.
5 This operation is-followed by a similar operation of the cutter 4 which rolls over the upper face of the plane face of the cut-off plate 2 partially to divide the upper wall of the tubed material I with a rolling pinch cut, as shown at 2" in Fig.
10 4, the plate 2 in this operation bearing against the land M in the lower roller 5 and moving forward at cutter speed. This is a partial severing or dividing operation and during this operation the bag tubing is in engagement with the rollers 15 I5 which are just beyond the cutter rollers so .as to keep the tubing from plugging.
As the cutters 3 and 4 engage only the plane faces of the cut-oil plate 2 it will be appreciated, of course, that the edges of the tubed 'material 20 for a distance at least equal to the thickness of the cut-oil plate are still uncut. We have shown this in Fig. 4 on somewhat of an exaggerated scale for the sake of clarity. In this embodiment of our inventionthe severing or dividing opera- 25 tion is completed by cutters l8 carried by rollers IE to which the tube is next advanced, these outters cooperating with plain rollers 20. The cutters are 50 arranged as to cut through the tube at the corners as shown at 2| in Fig. 4. The 30 cutters l8 complete the severing operation as will be obvious.
The bag length up to this stage will have a projecting tab 2! at each corner of the leading end, this end later to be bottomed in finishing the 35 bag, while the trailing end, that is to say, the end which eventually is to be the top end of the l finished bag will have a complementary cut-out. Beyond the rollers I9 and 20 we provide pairs of rollers 22 and 23. The rollers 22 are equipped 4 with cams 24 for controlling cutter or punch op erating levers 25 each of which is pivoted at 26. Lying below the advancing bag length is a die plate 21 and springs 28 have one end secured to this die plate and their other ends to the free ends of the lever 25, as seen in Fig. 1.
Attached to the levers 25 are die plungers 29 cooperating with the die plate 21 to cut out or trim the corners of the trailing end of each bag length as shown at 30 in Figs. 2 and 4. The die plungers 29 may be so shaped that the notches 30 just referred to are of such a shape that when the end of the tube is opened up, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the bottom 3! of each cut-out is practically straight, that is to say, is substantially 55 at right angles to the edges 3| of the bag length. As a consequence there are no sharp corners for a tear to start in the top end of the tube, particularly at the point where the material is folded in tubing; and if in the operation of severing or 60 dividing the tubing into bag lengths initially the corners of the bag length become shatteredor cracked these shattered or cracked portions will be removed by the cutters or plungers 29 in the trimming operation.
. It will be seen, therefore,'that the apparatus of this embodiment of our invention partially divides the tubed material by a rolling pinch cut followed by a completion of the dividing operation with the rotary cutters I8, this step being "'70 followed by the trimming operation just described in which we cut out the'corners of the trailing end of thebag length. I
In the embodiment of our invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the final trimming operation is 75 eliminated. The tubed material is partially divided with a rolling pinch cut by the cutters 3 and 4 acting in conjunction with the plate 2, the dividing operation being finished by the cutters I8. This leaves tabs 42' at the bottom end of each bag length with a complementary cut- 5 back or cut-out 43 at the other end of each bag length.
We have found that our invention is particularly meritorious when dealing with materials such as cellulose acetate, cellulose hydrate, glassine and the like. These materials not only tear very readily but are quite brittle so that if the corners of the top end of the bag or bag length are splintered or cracked there is great likelihood of tearing at this point. By cutting back or trimming the corners of the tube as above explained the. splintered material is removed and we are assured of smooth corners at the top end of each bag length.
We have described the cut-ofi plate 2 as being positively retracted by the lever 1. It is to be understood, however, that if desired this camcontrolledlever mechanism may be substituted by the arrangement shown in the copending application of Paul Hunziker, Serial No. 647,502; filed December 16, 1932 in which the cut-off plate is spring retracted.
It is to be understood also that die plungers 29 and 32 together with their cooperating plates may be substitutedby other mechanism if desired.
