Description

Aug(l7, 1937. c. G. neuem; 2,090325 CLIGKER DIE STOCK Filed Feb. l, 1937 55 whether carbon or alloy steels Patented Aug. 17, 1937 UNITED S'TATES PATENT OFFICE Progressive Service Company, St.
Louis, Mo., a
corporation of Missouri 3' Olaims.
'I'his invention rela testo clicker die stock. An object o1 the invention is to provide an improved clicker die stock for use in making clicker dies; seid stock comprising aoold drawn 5 steel strip having the essential qualities and characteristics, with the exception of the qualities ai1d ch aracteristics created and imparted by the methods and processes hereinafter des'cribed, for 1'orming the improved completed clicker die; seid stock being essentially preshaped wit;h a substantially fia.t intermediate side portion and with two short outwardly inclined bevels ab the edges of seid stock and ai: the inside cf the die when the die is formed, and With an outer surface which issubstantially symmetrically arcuate in cross-section from the lower edge to the upper edge 01' the stock; so that, after the die stock is formed in the shape of a clicker die, determined by a pattern used by the maker, and afi:er the ends 01' the stock have been welded together while the stock is on o1 about the pattern, the die may be ground or otherwise treated to remove the high o1 protruding portions at its weided ends and 'ground down or processed to the same height as the original die stock, after which the die is hardened and tempered and then straightened and sharpened to knife edges by srinding on a wheel or the like, or otherwise treating, the innerand outer edges of the beveled and curved surfaces, respectively, and, thereaflzer, the edges are resharpened to extremely sharp edg'es by hand operation or other means. The die may be painted in any selected color.
By use of my improved die stock, the operation of formi ng the die with opposed sharp autting edges is greatly facilitated and the time required to make the die is minimized to such an extent that a. die with double sharp cutting edges may be made and finished in approximately the 40 same time required to make a die with a single cutting edge according to present practice. In making clicker dies in accordance with this invention, I use cold drawn steel stock having a width of exa.ctly or approximately nine-sixteenths of an inch, so that the thickness of the die in proportion to its height isconsiderably zreater than any clicker dies with which I am familiar, thus providing a much stronger clicker die than can be made by use of die stock having a greater width in proportion to 1'ts horizontal thickness, 'I'herefore, an additional object oi' the invention is to provide a clicker die made of cold drawn steel that is strenger than the usual clicker dies at present in use. It is immaterial are used.
Application February l, 1937, Serial N0. 123,355
Other objects of the invention should be readily apparent from the sidering that the invention applies to cold drawn steel of all of the shapes within the disclosure and only one oi which is illustrated in the annexed drawing, and bearing in mind thai; I nontemplate the use ot cold drawn steel die stock as an essential part of the invention, and refererice'being ma.de to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of my improved preshaped die stock enlarged somewhat beyond the proportions required for making a double edged clicker die having a height; of approximately nine-sixteenths o1 an inch.
Fig. 2 is a. perspective view cf a. die formed from the preshaped die stock after the die has been sharpened and straightened afl;er hardening and tempering.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 o1 Fig. 2 a.fter the die has been hardened, sharpened and straightened,
The cold drawn steel stock is preshaped approximately as shown in Fig. 1, und isfurnished by the manufacturer 01 the stock in a cold drawn steel strip having a Width preferably nine-sixteenths o1 an inch, or any width es desired, and provided with a symmetrically curved unter surface I, with a. flai: intermediate inner suriace 2 and with marginal outwardly inclined bevels 3 and 4 intersedting the upper edge 5 und the lower edge 6 o1. thestock, respectively. I have obtained this preformed cold drawn steel stock in this satisfactory form and at permissible cost and finished and held to a. ver'y close tolerance with respect to the edges 5 and 6 a.nd also with respect t0 the thickness 013 the stock, including the curved outer Wall l, the flat intermediate wall 2, and the relatively narrow bevels 3 and l.
Such a. strip of cold drawn steel. when preshaped in this manner, requires only bending aboui: a. pattern to 1'orm the die, welding the abutting ends l, then grinding or flling down the high portions of the weld so as to contorm to the approxiniate height and thiclmess o1 the original die stock, includi g the thickness 01' the edges 5 and 6.
Nexo, the die is hardened and tempered am! then straightened by grinding or otherwise trea.t- Ing its opposite edges. Next, both edges are sharpened to knii'e edges on a. wheel or the like, one edge being ground approximately an the angular lines 8 and 9 anti the opposite edge on the lines I0 and H. After being thus treated and sharpened to a kniie edge, both edges I2 anti II following description, conare resharpened by amanual operation to extremely sharp edges so that they will readily cut through the leather or material to be died out by this improved die.
5 Obviously', this die is reversible so that, after one edge has been used, the die nuzy be reversed and the opposite edge used. 'Ihus, this die may be used to cut or form opposed duplicate parts 01 a shoe upper or the like and, there- 0 fore, serves the triple function oi' cutting duplicate forme, or beim; reversible to use both edges in cutting matching or coop'erating parts oi a shoe upper 01' the like, and cf doubie durability.
My improved die stock may be made cf cold drawn carbon steel or an alloy steei 01 appropriate sizes and shapes. The preferred size and shape is a stock that is about nine-sixteenths of an inch in width or height, and having a tolerance range between .032" to .0" at the edges. 'Ihis is to say that the preferred stock must have a width essentially about nine-sixteenths oi' an inch before the edges are treated to iorm the sharp c1itting edges of the die. The tolerance indicated is enough to aliow Ior the sharpening cf both edges of the die alter the die has been shaped from the stock having a width of about nine-sixteenths cf an inch with aliowance for sharpening.
This improved die stock has dimensions afiord- Ing the needed tolera'nce range for treatment to form the two opposite sharp cutting edges after the die has been shaped without substantiaily reducing the width or height of the die. In its original torm, as shown in Fig. 1, the opposite edges of the die stock are nearly uniform and both edges can be sharpened by removing appioximately' the sarne amount, of material from the two edges. Being reversible and having the two opposed edges, the same die can be used to cut or Iorm the two side portions of a shoe upper, one side cf the die being used to form one side portion and the opposite side cf the die being used to forrn the opposite side portion of the shoe upper.
'Ihis invention is an advance and improvement over the invention disclosed in my prior Patent N0. 2049157, July 28, 1936, and has been found to be, and has been acctpted es, an advantageous advance in the art thereover because, by use 01 this new die made from this improved die stock, by this method and process, a die having the ioresoing and other advantages over said patented die is made.
The bending 'oi' the stock to iorm the diemay be eiitected by heatinz the die stach only at the points beim; bent and very quickiy in order not to change thequality orcharacter or temper to any undesirad extent. es disclosed in my said prior patent.
By this invention Lohtaln all o! the advantages and savinas disclosed in my d prlor patent. in addition to the adnntsss an savines herein disclosed andsosseflfl er otherwise-now apparent from thirdisclosure. The invention has been found to meet an existing need in these particulars and; without restricting myseli in any unessential particulars, what 11 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Clieker die stock comprisim: a cold drawn steel strip having upper and lower edges o! perceptible width. a symmetrically arcuate unter weil. and an inne: weil havinz beveled opposite marginal portions. said arcuate outer wall'and said beveled marginal bortions intersectihl said upper and lower edges. the die stock beim substantially 01 flnished clicker die crossseetional dimensionsand cf graduaily increo3ing thickness from each o! said ed:s to its longitudinal horizontal unter.
