Description

Eli
Patented 10, 1937 UNITED STATES COSMETICS Martin Bol lmann, Dessau in Anhalt, Germany, assignor to Winthrop Chemical Company, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York No Drawing. Application April 20, 1935, Serial No. 17,540. In Germany April 21,1934
My present invention relates to cosmetic preparations.
One of its objects is to improve cosmetics containing water and/or an oil such as, for instance, stearate creams, cold creams, creamlike or liquid powders and similar products with respect to their capacity to be finely spread on the skin by rubbing or to be resorbed and/or with respect to their adherence.
In my U. S. Patent No. 1,995,663, I have described cosmetic preparations which contain magnesium or zinc salts of such aliphatic acids which have an odd number of carbon atoms viz.- heptylic acid, nonylic acid, undecylic acid, tridecylic acid, pentadecylic acid, and heptadecylic.
acid.
Now, i have found that a similar improvement can be attained by the use of the free aliphatic acids which contain an odd number of carbon atoms. There come in question for the invention the free saturated acids having an odd number of carbon atoms ranging from 9 to 17 C. I prefer, however, the use of undecylic acid having particularly favorable properties.
The acids having an odd number of carbon atoms have remarkably better propertiesfor the purpose in question than the acids with an even weight:-
Example 1.-Liquid powder Parts Zinc stearate 3.8 Undecylic acid 0.2 Titanium white 8 Talc 10.5 Glycerin 6 are stirred with 80 parts of distilled water. The liquid powder thus obtained, shaken before use,
can be remarkably well and uniformly rubbed on the skin and is very finely retained.
Example 2.-Creamlike powder Parts Zinc stearate 7.6 Undecylic acid 0.4
Parts Potash 1.8 Borax 1 Glycerin 85 are heated to together with 160 parts of distilled water.
17 parts of stearic acid and ass part of un-- decylic acid are introduced whfle stirring, into the hot solution and stirring is conia'nued until the mixture has become cold. The cream thus obtained spreads and coats essentially better and more uniformly on the skin than a preparation containing no undecylic acid.
Example 4.C'0ld cream Parts White ceresine 27 Spermaceti 25 Stearic acid 21 Undecylic acid 1 White and purified petroleum jelly 87 Example 5.-Lip-sticks Parts Stearic acid 19 White Vaseline oil. 38 Ceresine 38 Undecylic a 5 are melted together andcast into the usual molds. The lip-sticks thus obtained which may be colored as desired, are distinguished by their soft and firmly adhering coating.
In an analogous manner, other aliphatic acids used. 7
What I claim is:- 1. Cosmetic preparations of the group consist- I ing of creams, creamlike and liquid powders, and
lip-sticks containing a saturated aliphatic monohavingan odd number of carbon atoms may be 2. Cosmetic preparations of the group consisting of creams, creamlike and liquid powders, and lip-sticks containing stearic acid and a saturated aliphatic monocarboxlyic acid with an odd num- 5 her of carbon atoms of 9 to 17 C.
. 3. Cosmetic preparations of the group consisting of creams, creamiike and liquid powders, and lip-sticks containing imdecylic acid.
4. Cosmetic preparations of the group consisting of creams, 'creamlike and liquid powders, and lip-sticks containing stearic acid and undecylic acid.
5. Cosmetic preparation 01' the group consisting of creams, creamiike and liquid powders, and lip-sticks comprising a suspension of zinc stearate and undecylic acid.
