Description

J. B. WALKER Aug. 1o, 1937.
GAME
Filed sept. 2s, 1934 M ma n a WW w `latented Aug. l0, 1937 STES 1 Claim.
This invention relates to games, and more particularly to marble games, or games in which a round object is rolled over a surface.
The general object of the invention is to provide a marble game or the like, in which a considerable amount of skill may be exercised by the players of the game, thus providing an improved marble game of skill as distinguished from the conventional marble game of chance. I
A more particular object is to provide a marble game, or the like, in which a deflector may be selectively positioned or swung by the players for engaging the marble for deecting it into positions on the game board for making the highest 1.3 possible score on said board.
A further object is to provide an additional deiiector which may be actuated by the players in conjunction with or independent of the aforesaid deflector and in like manner, for accomplishing the purpose of the aforesaid deector.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
In the specification and the annexed drawing, I disclose my invention in a desirable form, but 5 I do not limit the same to such form because my invention may be embodied in other forms, and it it is to be understood that in and by the claim of this application, I intend to cover my invention in whatever form it may be embodied. In the drawing:
Figure l isy a plan View of a marble game board embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the game board shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side view of a modlfieation of my invention,
Figure l is a fragmentary side view of another modification of my invention, and,
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Referring with particularity to the drawing, I designates a game board including a marble or ball projecting plunger 2 and gui-deway 3 at one side of said board, a marble or ball deiiector 4 ,5 at the other side and in the upper part of said board, an additional deiiector 5, pockets B, l, and 8, cages 9,16, il, l2, i3, E4, i5, and I6, guide pins Vl, i8, l9,21, 2l, 22, 23, 25S, 25, 26, and 21, and an arresting bar 28 at the lower end of said board provided with arresting notches 29 for the marbles or balls.
The deflector comprises an arm 3E) vand a spring-wire striking member 3| secured at one end to the inner end of said arm, but said arm,
instead of being xed to the board as in the conventional marble game, is adjustably secured at one end by a set screw 32 on the upper end of a stud shaft 33 which is journaled in a bearing Sil in the game board l and extends through said board. On the lower end of said stud shaft 33 is secured a bevel gear 35 which meshes with a bevel gear 36 secured on one end of a shaft 3l journaled in bearings 38 and 39 mounted on the under side of the game board i. The other end of the shaft 31 extends through the lower end support lil of the game board l, and a thumb wheel ll is secured on said end of said shaft outside of said support, for turning said shaft.
The deflector 5 is secured on the upper end of a stud shaft 42 extending through the upper portion of the game board l at the center thereof slightly below the deflector l and journaled in a bearing 43 in the game board. On the lower end of said stud shaft 42 is secured a bevel gear M which meshes with a bevel gear 45 secured on a. shaft 46 journaled in bearings lll and 48 mounted on the under side of the game board l, there being a thumb wheel 53 secured on the lower end of the shaft 46 outside of the lower end support di) of the game board, for turning the said shaft.
The operation, uses and advantages of my invention are as follows:
A marble or ball Sii being placed in the guideway 3 against the plunger 2; the plunger is drawn rearwardly by a player of the game and released so that the plunger, under the influence of its spring, will project the marble upwardly through said slideway into and around the upper end of the game board l to the other side of the board against the deflector 4. As the marble rolls against said deflector, the player, by turning the thumb wheel 4l, may, through the medium of the shaft 3l, bevel gears 36 and 35 and stud shaft 33, position or swing the deilector 4 to engage the marble and deflect the marble upwardly along the line 5i into the poclceiJ 6, which doubles the score, or along the line 62 into the cage 9 which counts 400 in the game.
Should the marble fail to roll into said pocket 6 or into the cage 9, when deflected by the deiiector fl, and roll downwardly along the line (i3, the deflector 5 may, through the medium of the thumb wheel 5B, shaft 45, bevel gears l5 and and stud shaft d2, be positioned or swung by a player, as indicated at Ell, upon turning said thumb wheel, to engage the marble and deflect it along the line 54 into the cage i2, which counts 200 in the game.
Should the marble receive a blow from the plunger a insumcient to project it over against the deflector il, and the marble should travel downwardly .on the line 35, the player by turning the thumb wheel 50 may turn the defleotor 5 into 5 the position indicated at 66 to be struck by the marble and deflected along the line to the right against one of the pins 2U, whereupon the marble would be deflected by said pin along the line 6% into the cage lil, which counts 500V 10 in the game.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figure 3, the construction is the same as that shown in Figure 2, except that the bevel gears 35 and 35 are eliminated and a toggle joint l@ is substituted for said bevel gears, which toggle joint Connects the deector shaft 33 and the operating shaft 31, whereby said deflector shaft and the deflector l are turned upon turning said operating shaft.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figures 4 and 5, the construction is the same as that shown in Figure 2, except that the bevel gears 35 and 36 are eliminated and a fork ll and arm 'i2 are substituted for said bevel gears,
` which fork is formed on the lower end of the deflector shaft 33 and which arm is secured on the adjacent end of the operating shaft 3l and extends into said fork, whereby said deilector shaft and the deector are turned upon turning said operating shaft.
The gaine board l, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing and described in this specification, is for the purpose of illustration only, and is in no Way intended to limit my invention to such form of board, since'rny invention is applicable to any form of marble game board.
The use of my invention on marble or ball game boards stimulates interest in said games by making such games games of skill rather than games of chance.
