This invention relates to improvements in.-

vacuum massaging devices and anobject of the invention is to -provide a device of the character herein described which when passed'over the "skinwil1, by vacuum action, draw blood to. the. superficial layerthereof and remove secretions exuded fro-mt the: pores, thus toning and. cleansing theskin.

A further object of theinvention is to provide a deviceof the character herein described which;

when passed over the scalp, will, by suction, remove dandruff and invigorate the tissues of the scalp, thereby stimulating a healthy growth of hair; 7

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which is provided with filtering means to remove all foreign matter from the air passing through the device before-it reaches the outer atmosphere.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which may be conveniently disassembled for cleaning purposes or for changing the filter.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which may be used as a blower or as a means for supplying a blast of air when used with such attachments as atomizers, etc.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which is simple to construct, economical to manufacture, and will not easily become out of order.

With the above more important objects in view and such other minor objects as may appear as the specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, in which:-

This invention consists of a cylindrical casing I, to the lower surface of which is attached a handle 2. The forward end 3 of the cylinder is reduced in diameter and is provided with a conduit 4 extending centrally therethrough. Over 55 this conduit is received the rear portion 5 of the filter housing which is maintained in position by a'set screw 6. i i j An internally threaded flange! extends forwardly from the periphery of the portion 5 and the junction between the flange and the housing 7 provides a shoulder 8.

This material may be paper or cloth and can be medicated if so desired. A wire ring I4 is inserted between the filter and the shoulder II to prevent damage to the filter when the cap is screwed into the position illustrated.

Receivable over the outer periphery of the boss I0 is an elbow l5 which is provided with an enlarged flange H5 at the lower end thereof. Within this flange is an annular recess l'l which is designed to receive a mouthpiece I8. This mouthpiece is maintained in position by means of a pin I9 receivable by a bayonet joint 20 within the flange I6. The mouthpiece is flared outward- 1y as shown and is preferably made of wood or other non-metallic substance, and the lower edge thereof is provided with an annular semicircular groove 2| which encircles the aperture 22 and is provided for a purpose presently to be ex- "plained.

Within the casing l is an electric motor 23 which is spaced from the casing and is held firmly in position by bolts 24. A propeller 25 is affixed to the forward end of the motor shaft and is designed to cause a blast of air to move inwardly through the mouthpiece 22. An electric cable 26 passes through the casing and is adapted to carry the current for the motor 23. A toggle switch 21 is conveniently located adjacent the handle 2 in order to control the operation of the motor.

The rear end 28 of the casing is also reduced in diameter in a manner similar to the forward end thereof, and is provided with a nozzle 29 from which the air, after passing through the device, may be expelled. This nozzle, it should be noted, has a uniform diameter for a portion of the length thereof, and is adapted to receive an atomizer or other device which requires a current of air for operation.

Having described the structure of the device, the mode of operation thereof will now be presented.

When the device is used for massaging the scalp, it has been found to have a highly beneficial effect thereon in that the blood-is caused to flow in the surface layers of the skin due to fective in removing dandruff and other foreign matter from the hair. 7 I

When the machine is used with a mouthpiece which does not have the annular groove 2|, it

dandruff from the hair; However, with the annular groove, practically completeremoval ofthe dandruff can be effected. Theaction of this groove is not clearly understood, but. it is be- .lieved that the vibration of the machine combined with the suction causes the hairs to bend or kink and thereby throw off the dandruff which is caught in the air stream and carried into the machine.

After each application of the machine, the filter l3 may be removed and another substituted therefor.

It should be mentioned that if the device is to be used as a blower, heated air can also be expelled therefrom by placing an electrical element across the space behind the motor 23.

From the foregoing, it will now be evident that I have provided a highly efficient type of massaging device by means of which a massage can be effected more efficiently and with greater despatch than has hitherto been the case.

Since various modifications can be made in the above invention, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same, made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit and'scope thereof, it is intended that the vacuum action. The device is also'very efall matter contained in the accompanying specificationshallbe interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense and I desire only such limitations placed thereon as are specifically expressed in the accompanying claim. has been found to remove only a fraction of the What 'I' claim as my invention is:--

A vacuuinmassaging device comprising a casing,-a fan situated within said casing and spaced from the wall thereof, a conduit extending from the interior of said casing and communicating with a filtering chamber, a removable filter within said chamber and a tube extending from said chamber on the opposite side of said filter to the point of entrance of said conduit, a mouthpiece attachable-to said tube, said mouthpiece being designed to engage with the hair or skin of a person undergoing treatment.
