F.'H. MILLER VEGETABLE SLICER Filed March 51,, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 lllllllll gYVUQ/YVtOD FREDERICK H.MILLER F. H. MILLER VEGETABLE SLICER July 27, 1937.
Filed March 31, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FREDERICK HM ILLEE' Patented July 27, 1937 UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The device relates to potato slicers of the type used for shoe string or French fries.
The invention has for its primary object to provide a device capable of cutting different size potato strips.
Another object is to provide a device so constructed that anyone can use it safely.
Still another object is to provide a device which is simple and practical in construction, thus making the device easy to clean.
With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear the invention further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail cross section go taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 and showing the unit with the larger cutter disc and corresponding cutting blade in place.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device.
Figure 4'is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and it shows the unit with the smaller cutter disc and corresponding cutting blade in place.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a cutting unit.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, l indicates the base which has its sides upturned as at 2 and curled at 3 to form a track.
The base I has an aperture 4 to receive the element carrying the cutter disc.
5 indicates the brackets which hold the cutting unit after it is inserted through the aperture 4, the cutting unit being fulcrumed at It and coming to rest on the lips 6 of the brackets 5.
The brackets 5 frictionally engage the sides 8 of the cutting unit. The brackets 5 are riveted to the sides 2 of the base I by rivets l.
The cutting unit is made up of sides 8 having a top H! which is pressed out at 9 to form a seat for the cutting blade H which is bolted at l2.
The cutter discs l3 are inserted by springing apart the sides 8 of the cutting unit. I 5 indicates the axle which carries the discs l3 which are held spaced equal distances from one another by the spacers 25.
The vegetable carriage is composed of two telescopic members which are frictionally held and slidably mounted on the tracks 3. l6 indicates the longest part of the carriage which has a slot ill to engage the ears l8 which are pressed out of the shorter member of the carriage which bears the numeral ll.
Part it of the carriage is equipped with a tensioning portion which is operated by tightening or loosening the bolt 2 l 24 indicates a slot in l6 which allows for vertical movement of 20 so as to make it useful in engaging the vegetable at the lowest point at which the carriage can clear the cutters.
The base has legs 22 which are bolted at 23.
The purpose of changing the design of my device was to put into effect the improvements which have occurred to me as a result of actual practical operation of the device.
It is very simple to change the size of the slice produced by removing the cutting unit by pushing on the under side of said unit at the point indicated by the numeral iii. In inserting the desired unit the fulcrum lb of the unit is placed in contact with the edge of the aperture 4 and then pressed downwardly until it comes to rest on the lips 6 of the brackets 5. The brackets 5 frictionally engage the sides 8 of the cutting unit and hold said unit firmly in place.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction, operation and utility of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art and I wish it understood that changes in the details of construction may be readily made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A trough-like base having an opening in its bottom, a pair of brackets secured to said base and extending below the bottom of said base one at each side of said opening, in combination with a cutter unit comprising a supporting body, a set of rotary vertical knives and a transverse knife carried by said supporting body, said supporting body being insertable in said opening and being supported by said brackets, said supporting body having a top and a pair of sides, the latter being held by said brackets by retaining friction, said sides of the supporting body having recessed portions to engage with the bottom of said troughlike base at one end of the opening therein for purposes described.
2. In a device of the class described, a troughlike base having a track, a vertical slicing cutter, and a horizontal slicing cutter mounted in an opening in the trough, a vegetable carriage slidably mounted in said base for being moved past said cutters, and a vegetable feeder cooperating with said carriage, said carriage having grooved sides with provisions which make it slidable on said base track and which hold it in place by friction, a tension device mounted on said carriage and cooperating therewith to increase or diminish the degree of friction between said carriage and said base track.
3. A sheet metal trough-like member having a bottom and sides, the bottom having an opening, a sheet metal bracket member secured to each of said sides adjacent said opening and extending below the same, a cutter unit being insertable in said opening and being supported by said brackets, said cutter unit comprising a body of sheet metal having a top and sides, a vertical slicing knife-set unit mounted in said sides of said body and projecting above the top thereof, a horizontal slicing knife mounted on the top of said body, said bodys sides having notches at one end ,to engage the edge of said trough-like member as a pivot when said cutter unit is inserted, said bracket member adapted to engage the sides of said body when in its operative position, with suflicient friction to prevent displacement of said cutter unit.
4. In a device of the class described, a troughlike base having a track, a vertical slicing cutter, 5 and a horizontal slicing cutter mounted in an opening in the trough, a vegetable carriage slidably mounted in said base for being moved past said cutters, and a vegetable feeder cooperating with said carriage, said'carriage having grooved 1o sides with provisions which make it slidable on said base track and which hold it in place by friction, a tension device mounted on said carriage and cooperating therewith to increase or diminish the degree of friction between said carriage and 15 said base track, means to mount said tensioning device for vertical adjustment on the one end of said carriage for adjustment to position of cutterclearance according to the particular size cutters being used. 20
