Description
"Patented `.July 21, '1937 yPA My: invention relates .to improvements in Vsheet f aligning and gauging devices for.y aligningrand preserving such an alignment of a pluralityy of sheetsfor4 insertioninto a; typewriter and oper 5 ates in conjunction with improved means i'or aligning said sheets along 'an adjacent edge or laterally to the first alignment and for indicating or gauging the position ofthe bottom of said aligned sheets relatively to the writing line of a typewriter in order that an operator may readily determine when the said lower edge or bottom of said sheets is approaching said writing line.
'I'he primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved device for aligning a plurality of superimposed sheets for insertion into a typewriter. Another object is to provide a new and improveddevlce of the character described having improved means for indicating to an operator of a typewriter within which a plurality or a single sheet is inserted, the position of the bottom of said sheet or sheets relatively to the writing line of a typewriter, in order that a neat and proper bottom and side margins :may be obtained. I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the.present application, and in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improved device;
80 Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same folded tol 'align a plurality of superimposed sheets:
Fig. 3 is `a side elevation of Fig. 2, with the thickness of the sheets greatly exaggerated;
Fig. 4 is abroken view of a portion of a type-' writer platen disclosing one application of my lmi provement; and y Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a platen, showing another application of the improvement.
Referring to the drawing:
40 The numeral I is used to designate-'a sheet scored parallel to one end thereof as at 2to form f a tab 3 foldable upon said sheet I to f orm a pocket 4 to receive and align the ends of a plurality of superimposed sheets 6, such as carbons and second sheets to receive impressions of matter im-k pressed upon the top sheet.
My invention provides a Vsecond tab 1 preferably along the remote half of an edge adiacentthe i'lrst end, said tab 1 being scored along its edge as at 8 so that said tabl may be folded upon the sheet I'to form a second pocket to receive and align adjacent edgesof said superimposed sheets 6 laterally to the first alignment of the pocket l, tomore perfectly register -said superimposed sheets, one upon another.
,This superimposed registration or alignmentof the sheets 6 is provided to' facilitate insertion" of said` sheets, bymeans Vofv the sheet I 'and its tabs 3 and 1, into va typewriter. 'I'he sheetI is provided preferably along the left margin thereof 5 with indices 9 which indices are offset at approxii mately midposition of the sheet and onto the face of the tab 1 as at II, so that after the sheet I with its aligned sheets 6 is inserted into a type- `writer and rolled around the platen I2 thereof 10 and said tab 1 unfolded, the said indices II will appear immediately yadjacent the left edges of 'said aligned sheets 6 to indicate to an operator the position of the bottom of said aligned sheets 6relatively to the writing line of said typewriter, 15 not shown, as indicated by the usual scale I 4, as" disclosed in Fig. 4.of the drawing. y
`The tab 1is bevelled on its end nearest the tab 3Y as at I5, the purpose'of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth. 20
In operation: v
The superimposed sheets 6 are inserted with one set of ends in the pocket 4 and said edges shogged into alignment within said pocket. The tab 1 is then folded over said sheets 6 and the 25 .edges of said superimposed sheets adjacent the 1 first aligned edges are shogged into alignment against said tab 1 and laterally to the first alignment within the pocket 4, so that said superim-k posed sheets 6 are iny substantially perfect super- 30 imposed alignment.
'I'he sheet I with its` aligned sheets 6 is then 1 grspedby homing the tabs a and -1 and inserted into a typewriter, not shown, by inserting the end of the sheet I with the tab 3 thereon 35 foremost andbetween the platen I2 and paper rest I6 of a typewriter and the platen is then turned in the usual manner to bring the aligned sheets 6 into writing position. When the tab 1` isv released, the presence of the superimposed 40 sheets 6 as well as the normal tendency of the tab 1 to unfoldwill cause said tab to assume a slightly more than right angle to the body of the sheet I, as disclosed in Fig. 5 of the drawing. As the sheet I with its superimposed sheets 45 6 are fed further into thetypewriter in thecourse of writing, the bevelled end I5 of the said tab, 1, when it encounters the curved edge of the paper rest I6, will be fully unfolded by said curved `end so'that the indices II on theface 50 y of `said tab 1 willl be presented to the view of an operator, when slightly more than half ofv the sheets 6 have been filled. v These indices will thenindicate to an operator the position of the bottom of the superimposedv sheets 6 relatively to the` 55 writing line of the typewriter as indicated by the scale I4, as fully disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawing. By means of this arrangement a neat margin may be preserved for the bottom as well as the left hand side of the superimposed sheets.
The bevelled end l5 of the tab l will operate similarly when encountering the supporting arm of the paper holders or any other obstruction which may be encountered during its progress through the machine.
Having described my invention I claim- 1. The `combination with a sheet aligning device, comprising a sheet folded upon itself at one end to form a pocket for receiving and alignf ing one set of edges of a plurality of superimposed sheets of a tab formed integral with the remote half of an edge adjacent to said end, said tab being foldable upon said sheet to form a. second pocket to receive and align adjacent edges of said superimposed sheets laterally to the first alignment and to facilitate preservation of both alignmentsv and insertion of said aligned sheets into a typewriter, said tab being provided with indices upon its face to indicate the position of the bottom of said superimposed sheets relatively to the Writing line of a typewriter when said superimposed and aligned sheets are inserted therein.
2. The combination .with a sheet aligning de- Vice, comprising a sheet of foldable material folded upon itself at one end to form a pocket for receiving and aligning the ends of a plurality of superimposed sheets, of a tab formed upon the remote portion of an edge adjacent said end and folded upon said sheet to form a second pocket for aligning adjacent edges of said superimposed sheets, laterally to the rst alignment, said tab being provided with indices upon its faceto indicate the relative position of the said superimposed sheets relatively to the writing line of a typewriter when'said sheets and aligning devvice ,are inserted therein, said tab having a bevelled end adjacent the folded end of said sheet by` means of which said tab may be unfolded when moving over the edge of a paper rest of a typewriter within which said superimposed sheetsy are inserted to display said indices DAVID M. SCOVILLE.
