Application May 24, 1938, Serial No. 209,643 5 Claims. ,(Cl. 129 16.13) I My invention relates to improvements in ad dress printing plates equipped with detachable index card holders and adapted to be usedin addressograph machines.

One object of my invention is to provide an address printing plate and index card holder which can be quickly attached and used together or as readily detached so the address printing plate can be used without the index card holder;

A second object is to provide improved means for connecting the address printing plate and index card holder;

A third object is to provide improved means for automatically locking the address printing plate and index card holder together so they will not come apart when in use; and

A further object is to provide a separable address printing plate and index card holder each of which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal.

I attain these and other objects by means of the mechanism shown in theaccompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the address printing plate and index card holder connected;

For the sake of brevity the address printing plate member and the index card holder member may sometimes herein be called the members, or the two members, or the address member, or the printing member, or the index member.

Referring to the drawing in detail The address plate I is adapted to have a name and address or other printing characters embossed thereon and has its longitudinal margins depressed and provided with inturned flanges. At the upper margin the inturned flange has two portions cut away to form a left end flange 3, a middle flange 4, and a right end flange 5, each having a recess thereunder. It is not essential to have a recess under flange 5 except to put it on the same plane with flanges 3 and 4.

The index card holder has at its upper margin a curled over edge [0, having thereunder a recess to receive and hold the upper edge of an index card. At'the lower edge of the index card holder are threeover turned ears ll, l2 and 14 adapted to overlap and hold the lower edge of an index card in place. At each end of the index card holder is a raised stop I! each having its inner 5 portion cut away from the body of the member to form a wall at a right angle to the plane of the member and adapted to contact the end of an index card. The opposite or outer wall of the stop is sloping so an index card can be easily slipped over either stop into place. Projecting from the lower. margin of the index card holder are two wings l5, l6 slightly elevated above the plane of the main body of the index member and having at their left ends tongues 6, and 1, adapted m to slide endwise into the recesses under the flanges 3 and 4 on the address plate to connect the members.

To connect the members hold the address plate in the left hand and with the index card holder in the right hand slide the tonguesfi and i into the recesses under the flanges 3 and 4 until the wing 15 drops into the space between the flanges 3 and 4, and the wing it drops into the space between the flanges 4 and 5. When thus connected the wing I6 if moved to the right would engage the adjacent end offlange 5 and prevent the members from being disconnected. If for any reason the outer end of wing l 6 should get by the adjacent end of flange 5, then the inner end of the wing [5 would contact the adjacent end of flange 4 and prevent the members from being disconnected'when in use.

The flanges 4 and 5 and the wings I5 and iii are so constructed that when wing It contacts flange 5 there is some space between wing l5 and the adjacent end of flange 4. This facilitates dis connecting the members as will be seen in the following paragraph.

To disconnect the two members hold the address plate in the left hand with the thumb on the far end of flange 4, then with the right thumb and forefinger lift the right end of the index Holder and draw the end of the wing I6 over, and let it rest on, the adjacent end of the flange 5, then with the right thumb and forefinger grasp the index holder adjacent to but not on the far end of flange 4, then with the right forefinger raise the right end of wing 15 so it will slide over 50 flange 4 then draw the tongues 6 and I out from under flanges 3 and 4 and the members are separated.

A number of words are required to fully describe in minute detail just how to attach and the recess under flange 4. This; relieves the eyes from Watching both tongues at once when connecting the two members. Tongue 1 could be caused to enter the recess first but I prefer to have tongue 6 enter first.

The index card holder, when attached to an address printing plate ready for use, is adapted to be provided with an index card bearing the same name and address as is embossed on the printing plate. With the names all spelled backwards on the printing plates, as they necessarily are, it is a hard strain on the eyes to locate individual plates in a long tray full of plates if one has to depend on reading the names on the plates My improved printing plate with detachable index card holder provided with an index card makes it much easier to find individual plates in a tray. When a used index card is no longer wanted, it can be removed quickly and another card, with new name, inserted.

I claim;

1. A printing device comprising an address printing plate member and an index card holder member, the printing member having at its upper margin an inturned left end flange, an inturned middle flange and an inturned right end flange, the left and middle flanges each having a recess thereunder, the index member having at its lower margin two wings each having a tongue arranged parallel with the member, said tongues being removably arranged in the recesses under the left and. middle flanges to detachably connect the members, the right hand end of the right wing contacting the adjacent end of the right flange for the purpose set forth.

2. A printing device comprising an address printing plate member and an index card holder member, the printing member having at its upper margin an inturned left end flange, an inturned middle flange and an inturned right end flange,

' the left and middle flanges each having a recess right wing can be seated on the left end of the right flange preparatory to disconnecting the members.

3. A printing device comprising a printing member and an index member, the printing member having at its upper margin an inturned left flange, an inturned middle flange and an inturned right flange having recesses under them and two spaces between them, the index member having at its lower margin a left wing and a right wing each having a tongue projecting from its left margin, the wings being removably seated in and fitting the spaces between the flanges, the tongues being removably inserted in the recesses under the left and middle flanges, both ends of the right wing and the left end of the left wing being adapted to contact the flanges, and the right end of the left wing being adapted to contact the middle flange when the right end of the right wing overlaps the left end of the right flange, for the purpose set forth.

4. A printing device comprising a printing member and an index member, the printing member having at its upper margin an inturned left flange, an inturned middle flange and an inturned right flange having recesses under them and two spaces between them, the index member having at its lower margin 2. left wing and a right wing removably seated in and fitting the spaces between the flanges and each having a tongue projecting from its left margin, said tongues being removably inserted in the recesses under the left and middle flanges to detachably connect the members, the left wing and middle flange having a space between them when the right wing contacts the right flange for the purpose set forth.

5. A printing device comprising a printing member and an index member, the printing member having at its upper margin an inturned left flange, an inturned middle flange and an inturned right flange having recesses under them and two spaces between them, the index member having at its lower margin a left wing and a right wing removably seated in and fitting the spaces between the flanges and each having a tongue projecting from its left margin, said tongues being removably inserted in the recesses under the left and middle flanges to detachably connect the members, the right wing being adapted to contact the right flange, and the left wing being adapted to contact the middle flange when the right end of the right wing overlaps the left end of the right flange for the purpose set forth,
