IMPROVEMENT lN BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,752, dated October 8, 1878; application filed March 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MIoHELsoN,
0f the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Attaching Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in buttons for clothing, and in a method of attaching and securing them in place. In aformer application I have shown a button with a pointed shank, and having a means of securing it to a confining-head, so that it can be temporarily attached and removed at will; but my present invention consists in the employment of a button having a peculiar-shaped opening made in the inner surface of its disk for the introduction of a slotted or grooved stem or shank from a holding-head, after which the opening may be closed by the metal of the button itself, and thus permanently secure the shank and button together and to a garment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figures 1 and 2 are views of my invention.
A is a button, which is made of any suitable size, being stamped out or struck up, in the usual manner, from what is known as button-metal. It is hollow, having an outer and inner disk, as shown. The inner disk has a central slot, B, made in the form of a parallelogram, as shown; and from one end of this slot I make two angular cuts, extending away from the slot, so as to allow a lip of metal, C, to be turned up. This leaves an opening, whichisin the present case triangular in sh ape, and serves a purpose hereinafter described.
The head D, which prevents the button from leaving the clothing, is provided with a shank or stem, E, the end of which is pointed, so as to perforate the cloth to which the button is to be attached. Just back of this pointImake transverse slots G G, upon opposite sides of the stem, so that a section of the stem at this point would just fit the slot B in the button.
The operation of connecting the parts is as follows: The shank or stemE is forced through the cloth from the inside, ata point Where the button is to be secured. The button is pressed against the protruding point, so that it will enter the opening made by turning up the piece of metal C when introduced, so that the slots G on the shank are opposite the slot B in the button. The stem is passed into the slot, after which the lip O is turned down,
.thus permanently securing the button to the clothing, and the shank will be solidly fixed in the button, making a simple and easy method of securing buttons without needle, thread, or riveting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The button A, having the slot B, and the opening formed by turning up the lip C, in combination with the head D and shank E, said shank being adapted to fit the slot B, as shown, and to be secured permanently by the lip C, substantially as shown, and for the purpose herein described.
