My invention relates to presses and, in particular, to presses for pressing fruits, such as ing the fruit to a first pressing operation while it 10 is being macerated and disintegrated into juicy pulp and then to a second operation by which the juice is finally extracted from the pulp.
It is my object to contain the pulp so pressed within a bag so that it can be bodily removed from'the press without spilling the contents of the bag.
It is a further object to provide means for sealing the bag after the juicy pulp has been introduced into the bag and holding it in sealed condition as the final pressing operation takes place to prevent the pulp making its exit out of the mouth of the bag.
It is an object to provide a hydraulic system for circulating fluid so that the presser'of the initial pressing operation may be reciprocated; and may be permitted to return under the influence of extraneous mechanical means.
It is my object to provide in a single unitary structure a casing, motor pump and oil supply storage for the hydraulic system and the pressing apparatus with doors for introducing the fruits, such as apples, and for the removal of the pulp after it is pressed, and a spout for the delivery of apple juice, or whatever juice is extracted from the particular fruit. g
It is a further object to provide the apparatus in units which can be assembled or disassembled as units to facilitate repair.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the complete machine ready for pressing;
Figure 2 is a similar view with the press cham.' ber open, from which has been removed the press bag and with the trap door open through which is inserted the fruit to be pressed;
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the complete structure on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Referring to the drawings in detail, I is a foundation or base on which is mounted the driving motor 2. This motor is connected by its armature 3 through the coupling 4 to a hydraulic pump 5 which delivers fluid, such as oil, through the line 6 to the port I of the fitting 8 on the end of the ram cylinder 9, the other end of which is 55 connected by the pipe ID to the port I l in the plate I2 which forms the rear wall of the cylinder l3 cbntaining the press ram piston l4 and piston rod Hi. The pump is connected to the oil reservoir H5 in the base I by the pipe system H. Any surplus oil in the system is supplied to or taken from the reservoir Hi.
When the piston I8 is forced forwardly with its piston rod IS in the cylinder 9, it uncovers at the end of its stroke the pipe l0 admitting the hydraulic' pressure through the pipe l0 into the cylinder l3. This occurs when the feed plunger 20 has its arcuate face 2| brought adjacent to the surface 22 of the rotary cutter or macerator 23 which carries the knives 24.
Apples are introduced between the feed plunger 20 and the cutter 23 through the swinging door 25 pivoted at 26on the macerator casing 21 in which the feed plunger 20 reciprocates. A hook 28 on the rear of the feed plunger 20 is connected by the cable 29 over the pulley 30 to a spring 3| mounted on-the eye 32.
The casing 21 for the macerator 23 and feed plunger 20 is mounted by its flanges 33 and 34 on the walls l2 and 35 respectively by the bolts 36- and 31. This gives a broad, firm, spaced foundation for the macerator housing 21. The wall l2 carries a sleeve 36a for receiving the left hand end of the cylinder 9. This cylinder is provided with a packing 31a about the piston rod l9 adjacent the point of entry of the piston rod into the macerator casing 21 to prevent leakage.
The macerator or cutter 23 is mounted on an operating shaft 38 which is directly connected to and driven by an independent flanged motor 39. Instead of employing this independent motor 39, however, the shaft 38 may be driven by a flexible shaft, chain or gearing from the motor 2. Current is conducted to the motor 39 through wiring in the conduit 39a. The pulp descends through the passageway 40 into the interior of a cotton bag 4|, the throat of which encircles the throat 42 forming the passageway 41]. The rear of this bag throat 43 is held beneath the clip 44 and the front portion of the throat of the bag at 45 is held beneath the clip 46. The body of the bag depends in the space 41 between .the foraminous press plates 48 and 49. The plate 49 is mounted on the end door 50 which is pivoted at 5| and retained in operative position by the latches 52 which are pivoted on the casing at 53.
The plate 48 is mounted on the presser head 54 carried on the end of the piston rod l5, to which it is pivoted at 55. This piston rod l5 with its presser head 54 is withdrawn to its initial position by the helical spring 56 connected to it at 51 55 at one end and to, the stationary abutment 58 at the other end which is carried on the sleeve 59 mounted on the wall i2.
The space 60 in front of the piston l4 communicates with, the port 6| for draining any fluid which will accumulate in front of the piston l4.
The bag 4| which rests with its bottom upon the drain plate 62 that has the drain openings 63 is so arranged in the mannerthat it is-sup-,
ported that the sharp edge 84 of the head 54 will first withdraw the upper edge of the bag 43 and move it across the opening 40 to seal the pulp in the bag and then engage the wall 45 of the bag carrying it with the wall 43 into the horizontal position shown at 65. Thus, the bag is completely sealed and the exit of its pulp contents, from which the juice has been finally expelled by the presser 54, is prevented.
After the juice has run out down the inclined passageway 66 over the lip 61, the latches 52 are lifted, the door 50 swings downwardly as shown in "Figure 2 about the pivot 5| and the bag is lifted out where it can either be thrown away or its contents discharged.
The operation of the machine is controlled by suitable electric switches, which form no part of the invention. The motor runs through a complete cycle of operations which will be repeated as many times as necessary as the apples are fed one by one'through the trap door 25. It may require one or more apples before the bag is filled with pulp.
The pressure exerted in the hydraulic system is automatically controlled by a spring loaded safety valve 68 which bypasses the fluid to the reservoir l6 when the maximum pressure has been reached.
The mechanism ofthe motor, pump, pressure cylindenfeed cylinder, pipe, relief valve, etc., is all encased in a stainless metal cover and all parts coming in contact with the apples or juice are made of stainless alloy. A pressure gauge located at69 in the hydraulic system indicates the pressure being generated at all times.
The electric motor 39 which is directly connected with the grinder shaft and the electric motor 2 connected to the pump 5 are wired in parallel so that the turning of one switch starts both motors simultaneously.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying condi tions and uses.
It will be further understood that a number of apples may be stored in the chamber 21 at one time if desired.
