CHEESE AND VEGETABLE GRATER Filed July 27, 1936 Oamr cog vucoooo-oooa .r"** 1 30 14 INVENTOR 25 P575? CEPPfircH/O 1'2 BY ATTORNEY Patented July 13, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to cheese and vegetable graters, and the like devices.
An object of this invention is to provide a grater of the character described, having a sliding top and a grate therebeneath, said grate being removable for cleaning and replaceable when worn or bent out of shape.
A further object of this invention is to provide a grater of the character described, having a sliding drawer beneath the grate to catch the gratings.
A further object of this invention is to provide a neat, rugged and compact grater of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate and clean, and withal, practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Qther objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a grater embodying the invention, with the drawer and the sliding cover partially opened;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal elevational cross section of my improved grater.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, Ill designates a grater embodying the invention for grating cheese, vegetables, or other objects or articles. The same comprises a cabinet H having a bottom wall l2, a pair of parallel side walls 13, a rear wall M and a front wall [5. The side walls have on the inside surfaces thereof, and adjacent the bottom edges thereof, longitudinal parallel grooves Ilia. The front wall [5 is of less height than the rear wall l4 and is disposed above the bottom wall l2. The bottom edge of said front wall is substantially at the level of the top I of grooves ltiw. The top edge I8 of said front wall I5 is disposed below the top edges IQ of the side walls I3, for the purpose hereinafter to be explained.
The side walls l3 are formed adjacent the up per edges thereof with parallel longitudinal aligned grooves 20. Slidably mounted within the grooves 20, is a top cover 2| formed with a finger engaging socket 22 adjacent the front edge 22w thereof. The cover 2! is adapted to close the top of the cabinet, but may be moved forwardly to uncover the latter. The front edge 22a of the cover 2| overlies the top edge l8 of the front Wall l5. Slidably mounted within the bottom of the cabinet is a drawer 25, the sides whereof are received within the grooves Him in the side walls l3 of the cabinet. A knob 2E is preferably attached to the front wall of the drawer to facilitate movement of the latter. The front wall of the drawer covers the space beneath the front wall l5, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Fixed to the inner surfaces of the front and rear walls of the cabinet are a pair of aligned,
similar boards or blocks 30, preferably attached to said walls by screws 3!. Said boards have curved top edges 32 and. fixed to said top edges of said boards is a perforated grate 35 of curved, transverse cross section. The grate is preferably attached to the boards 30 by means of screws 36.
The cabinet may be normally retained in closed position. When it is desired to use the grate, the top cover is pulled forwardly and the article to be grated rubbed against the top of the grate, whereby the gratings drop into the drawer 25. The drawer may then be pulled forwardly and withdrawn from the cabinet to permit the gratings to be removed.
When it is desired to clean the grater, the screws 36 may be withdrawn and the grater lifted off the boards or blocks 30. The attachment of the grate to the blocks by screws also facilitates replacement of said grates. After the grate has been cleaned, the same may be again placed in position on the blocks and the screws 36 again screwed in place. The grooves Ilia in the side walls I3 form shoulders at the top to retain the drawer on the bottom wall I2 of the cabinet.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes.
might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new my desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A grater comprising a hollow cabinet having a bottom wall, parallel side walls, a rear wall and a front wall having an opening above said bottom wall, said opening being equal in width to the distance between said side walls, said side walls each being formed with high and deep internal longitudinal grooves extending from the plane of the lower edge of said front wall to said bottom wall, a drawer Within the cabinet slidable on said bottom wall and within said grooves, said drawer having side Walls of a thickness equal to the depth of said grooves and of a height equal to the height of said grooves, said side walls each having a longitudinal groove adjacent the top edge thereof, a top cover for the cabinet slidably mounted in said last mentioned grooves, a block secured to the inner surface of said rear wall below the top cover, a similar second block secured to the inner surface of said front wall below the top cover, said blocks being aligned, each side edge of each of said blocks being spaced from that parallel side wall adjacent which it is positioned, a perforated grate secured at the ends thereof to the top edges of said blocks to extend the length of the interior of said cabinet over said bottom wall and over said drawer, the longitudinal edges of said grate being co-extensive with the side edges of said blocks whereby the longitudinal edges of said grate are spaced from said side Walls.
