This invention relates to improvements in cabinets.
The general object of this invention is to provide a novel cabinet comprising a plurality of compartments and wherein novel means is provided for locking the closures of the compartments.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel concealed locking means for compartment members.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my cabinet;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing one drawer opened;

Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 'l-l of Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing the concealed panel opening;
Fig. 10 is an enlargediragmentary section showing one of the supports; and
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary section taken on line il-Il of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in a cabinet which is indicated generally at Ill. This cabinet is particularly adapted for containing jewelry and other articles of value and may be placed upon a dresser or upon other suitable means.
As shown the cabinet includes a rear portion or back ll, ends 12, a bottom l3, and a front I l. The cabinet includes a lower portion I5 and an upper narrower portion Hi. In the lower portion I provide a horizontal partition H which is spaced above and is parallel to the bottom l3 to provide a drawer space l8 in which I arrange a drawer it which is provided with suitable knob or handle 23 and which includes a recess or slot 2i in one of the drawer rails 22.
The partition l 1 serves as the bottom of a compartment 23 which has a closure 24 hinged as at 25. This closure 24 includes a glass panel 26 so that the contents of the compartment 23 may be observed.
At one end of the compartment 23 a vertically extending wall 21 is arranged on which a top portion 28 is provided to therefore provide a chamber 29 in which operating mechanism to be presently described is arranged. The hinge 25 is mounted on a transverse member 30 from which a supplemental back member 3| extends downwardly and engages the upper services of the partition I! to form a back for the compartment 23 and the chamber 29. In the rear of the partition 32 which in conjunction with the partition ll forms a recess 33 in which a drawer 34 is slidably mounted. This drawer 35 as shown in Fig. 3 has ends 35 and the drawer 34 is of length corresponding to that of the cabinet so that the outer faces of the end portion 35 are flush with the ends l2 of the cabinet when the drawer is in closed position.
Adjacent the member 30 I hinge a secret closure member 36 which is mounted on pivots 31 on the ends l2 to swing from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 9. The closure member 36 has a bevelled end 38 engaging a similarly bevelled portion 39 on the member 38 previously described.
The top of the closure member 36 and the inner surface of the rear l i may be preferably covered with a layer 4!] of material such as velvet so that a suitable background is provided for a compartment 4! which is arranged above the closure member 35 and in front of the back II is provided.
This compartment 4| is provided with a front door 42 which is hinged as at 33 to one end wall i 2 and this closure 42 is preferably provided with a glass panel 34 as shown. The upper end of the compartment 3! is closed by a partition 45 which has a closure at therefor which is hinged as at ll to the back H. The closure 46 includes a back 58 which is preferably opaque and the ends and front Q3 are provided with slots 50 in which a glass panel 5! is arranged. This panel 5| is spaced from the back 48 so that slot 52 for a picture or other object is provided. The lower end of the closure 46 is bevelled as at 53 to engage a bevelled stop 54 arranged on the partition 45.
Within the compartment ll I provide a plurality of post members 55 each of which, as shown, includes a sleeve 56 in which a screw 51 is inserted. This screw extends into the back II as shown in Fig. 10. The posts 55 may serve to support jewelry or other articles.
In order to lock the various compartments securely I provide a locking device in the chamber 10 supplemental back member 3! I have shown a 29. As shown this device includes a working lever 6i] mounted on a pivot 69. This lever includes an arm 62 on which an operating mem ber 63 is pivoted. This operating member 63 includes an upwardly extending portion Ed which passes through a rabbet 65 in the wall 23 which serves as a top for the chamber 29. The member 63 also includes a lower portion 66 which extends through a hole 87 in the partition H and projects into the recess 2i in the drawer rail previously described. A spring 68 normally urges the member 53 upwardly.
In use the closure 24 is moved downwardly until a hasp 68' thereon fits over an apertured member 68 and in this position the closure 24 is closed with the lower face of the closure engaging the portion 6 of the operating member 63 and depressing the operating member so that the end 66 thereof engages in the recess 2i in the drawer.
This motion of the operating member $55 rocks the lever 69 about its pivot 55 and rocks iink 69 on the rear of the lever upwardly. This link (it passes through a recess it in the member 39 and fits in a recess H in the bottom rail of the door d2 thus holding this door securely locked. At the same time the rocking of the lever 6d moves a link 86 rearwardly through a recess in the supplemental back 2! and into a hole 82 in the drawer 34 thus securely locking this drawer.
The apertured holding member 653' is preferably pivotally mounted between two plates 83 as shown in Fig. and includes an upwardly extending portion 841 which has a hook 85 thereon adapted to engage within a recess 85 in the hasp member 58". It will thus be apparent that after the hasp member has been removed from the member 68 the latter must be turned before the closure 2d can be opened and thus the various compartment closures released. A suitable padlock 87 engages in the aperture in. the member G8.
It will be noted that the ends l2 extend beyond the adjacent portions of the cabinet as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and that these ends may be made by a continuous saw cut thus avoiding the time required where sharp angles are included. The parts of the cabinet are preferably made of wood and can be secured together by screws, nails, or glue.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent thatI have invented a cabinet which can be economically made and which is highly effective for the intended purpose.
