BRUSH AND MOP HOLDER Original Fi'led June 1, 1936 By 2mm who/7 cE/"(mde/ Afiorneysi Patented July 6, 1937 UNHTED STATES BRUSH AND MOP HOLDER Simon Brandel, Phoenixville, Pa., assignor of onehalf to Joseph Castanova, West Conshohocken,
Application June 1, 1936, Serial No. 82,972 Renewed May 13, 1937 2 Claims.
This invention relates to brush and mop holders of the type constituting the subject matter of my United States Patent No. 2,014,490, issued September 17, 1935, upon which the present device constitutes an improvement.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide, in a holder comprising a stationary jaw and a pivoted jaw adapted to clamp therebetween either a stiff back brush or a strand mop head, a single reversible bracket embodying means on its ends selectively engageable with the pivoted jaw for securing said pivoted jaw in operative engagement with either a stifi back brush or a strand mop head.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a brush and mop holder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eificient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the invention, showing a brush mounted therein.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, showing a mop mounted in the holder.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section through an intermediate portion of the invention.
Figure 4 is a detail view in bottom perspective of the reversible bracket or clamp.
Figure 5 is a view in rear elevation of the pivoted jaw.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic ferrule l in the upper portion of which a handle 2 is secured, as at 3. portion of the ferrule I is recessed on its lower side, as at 4, in a manner to provide a shoulder 5. Projecting from the forward portion of the ferrule l is an integral shank 6 which carries a substantially channel-shaped jaw I.
Formed integrally with the shank 6 is an ear 8 to which a pair of spaced, arcuate bars 9 (see Figure 5) are pivctally connected, as at ID. A substantially channel-shaped jaw H is provided on the free ends of the arcuate bars 9 for coaction with the jaw 'l. Braces I2 are provided for the jaw l i and similar braces l3 are provided The lower or forward end for the stationary jaw 7. A spacer 14 extends between the arcuate bars 9 at an intermediate point.
The reference numeral l5 designates a substantially channel-shaped reversible bracket or clamp which is mounted in the recess 4, the ends of said bracket or clamp being engageable selectively with the shoulder 5. Projecting at an angle from one end of the bracket or clamp I5' is an integral arm l6 which is engageable with the arcuate bars 9 in the manner shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawing. Projecting from the other end of the bracket or clamp I5 is a curved arm I! which is also adapted to be brought into engagement with the arcuate bars 9 as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawing. Lugs l8 project from the arms l6 and IT for engage-' ment between the arcuate bars 9.
The ferrule I and the bracket or clamp l5 are provided with longitudinal slots I9 and 20, re-
spectively, which accommodate a bolt 2|. A wing nut 22 is threaded on the bolt 2| for securing the bracket or clamp IS in either position, a washer 23 being interposed between said wing nut and said bracket or clamp.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. To secure a stiff back brush, as at 24, between the jaws I and II, the bracket or clamp I5 is positioned as seen in Figure 1 of the drawing and the wing nut 22 is tightened in a manner to cause the arm I6, which is engaged with the arcuate bars 9, to swing the pivoted jaw ll toward the stationary jaw 1 thus clamping said brush 24 therebetween. The shoulder 5 provides a positive stop for the bracket or clamp l5. When a mop, as at 25, is to be secured between the jaws 1 and l l the wing nut 22 is loosened and the bracket or clamp I5 is reversed in a manner to bring the arm I! into operative position, as seen in Figure 2 of the drawing, the slots I9 and 2d facilitating this operation. The construction and arrangement of the arm I! is such as to substantially close the jaws l and l l on the mop 25 when the wing nut 22 is tightened. With the lugs I8 engaged between the bars 9 lateral or rotary movement of the bracket or clamp l5 is positively prevented. In addition to facilitating the reversing of the bracket or clamp l5 when the wing nut 22 is loosened, the slots l9 and 2E! permit said bracket or clamp to readily adjust and seat itself in the recess 4 in engagement with the shoulder 5 when said wing nut 22 is tightened and the pivoted jaw I l isbeing swung toward the stationary jaw l.
It is believed that the many advantages of a brush and mop holder constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A brush and mop holder comprising a ferrule for the reception of a handle, a stationary jaw mounted on said ferrule, a pivoted jaw mounted on the ferrule, a reversible clamp mounted on the ferrule, and a plurality of arms on said clamp selectively engageable with the pivoted jaw for securing said pivoted jaw in different positions of adjustment relative to the stationary jaw.
2. A brush and mop holder of the class demounted in the recess and having a longitudinal slot therein, the ends of said clamp being engageable selectively with theshoulder, a plurality of oppositely extending arms on said clamp selectively engageable with the pivoted jaw for securing said pivoted jaw in diiTerent positions of adjustment relative to the stationary jaw, a bolt engaged in the first and second-named slots, and a nut threaded on said bolt for releasably securing the clamp in either position in the recess.
