Description

July 6, 1937. J. A. MEYER 2,085,319
DDDDDDDD R INVENTOR Juuus A. MEYER By W Q. HTTORNEY Patented July 6, 1937 UNITED STATES I wise PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention has relation to improvements in drum snares more particularly to those in which the snare strands are confined within the margins of the drum head. The snare strands are securely fixed to terminal plates by means of which the entire snare device is mounted either on or under the drum head.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a snare which will not cut into the drum head; one that may be mounted on any conventlonal style of drum and which may be operated by any conventional snare strainer; one in which the snare strands are securely held in fixed, spaced relation relative to each other; and one in which the strands and the terminal plates lie in a common plane so that the entire snare device will lie flat on the drum head.
Further objects and other advantages possessed by the invention will be better apparent from a. detailed description of the same in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary bottom view of a drum with my improved snare device removably associated with the bottom head; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional detail taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, with parts broken away; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the terminal plates to which the snares are permanently secured.
Referring to the drawing, D represents a conventional drum, or" which H is the bottom head and S the drum shell on which is formed one of the flanges F. C represents the counter-hoop and H the flesh-hoop with which the margins of the head I-I engage.
My improved snare comprises a plurality of snare strands I, l, etc., extending between oppositely disposed terminal plates 2, 2, to which the ends of the strands are permanently secured. It
Will be observed that the inner portion 2 of each of the plates is bent upwardly to provide an offset 3, and to the inside surface of the portion 2 the ends of the snare strands are secured by so1dering, or in some equivalent manner. By referring to Figure 2 it will be observed that the solder 4 is disposed in the oiTset portion 3 and in contact with the inner surface of plate portion 2', and is of a thickness so as to form a continuous surface at the bottom surface a of the plate 2. The depth of offset 3 is substantially equal to the diameter d of the coils c of the snare strands so that one side of these coils will lie in the same plane with the surface a of plate 2. Thus, when the snare is disposed on the drum head the entire snare device, plates 2 and coils 0 will lie flat against the drum head without there being any possibility for the presentation of any edges to the drum head which might score and ruin the same. The plate 2 is provided with a transverse slot 4 and open ings 5, 5 adjacent the ends of the slot whereby the snare is secured to a snare strainer (not shown) by either a band 6 looped through the slot 4 or cords passed through the openings 5, 5. The band 6 preferably is of metallic material so that it may be held firmly in engagement with the plate 2 merely by means of a hoop 6 passed through the slot 4.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A snare device for drums comprising a pair of oppositely disposed terminal plates, a plurality of snare strands extending between said plates, each of said plates having ofiset portions for receiving the ends of the snare strands, and means disposed in and completely filling the offset portions for securing the strands to the plates, one side of said strands, said securing means and one side of each plate lying in a common plane.
