Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE@ J. EWING, oE NEW YoRk, N. Y., AssrGNoR To FREDERICK v. RUsHToN, or
' sAME PLAGE.
IMPRovf-:D sToPPER FOR BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,843, dated July 6, 1858.
To all whomj t may concern,.-
. clare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, to wit:
The nature of my invention consists in applying to bottles containing gaseous liquids confined under high pressure a valve-stopper by means of which the liquids can be drawn off without allowing the escape of gas, as shown in the drawings hereto annexed, making part of this specication, in which--v Figure l is a vertical section through the stopper. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line a b in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a representation'of the stopper affixed to the bottle.
A is the valve case or chest, with the corktube E passing through or partly through the cork C. B is the valve, with a screwthread working in the valvechest A, by means of which it is forced down to its place with a wrench, D, affixed to the nut N. b is a cylindrical opening in the valve passing down to near the seat end Where it has one or more openings, c: d is a packing of any substance to prevent the passage of liquid or gas between the valve `and valvechest. e is a washer which, when the valve is screwed down, is pressed tightly upon the valve-seat. f is a flange to protect the cork. The'cork is secured to the bottle-neck by the straps G attached to the langef. When the valve is open, as shown in the drawings, the fluid passes through the tube E and around the base of the valve, passing through the openings c and out of the opening b.
What I claim as an improvement in bottlestoppers for bottles containing gaseous liquids confined under high pressure is- The arrangement of the tubular stem-Valve B within the chest A, with the cork-tube E, the whole being constructed and operated substantially as herein set forth.
JAMES EWING.
