Description

June 8, 1937. c. PALMU 2,032,901
NAIL FULLER Filed May 12, 1936 g A llomeys Patented June 8, 1937 I UNITED STATES NAIL FULLER Carl Palmu, Maple, Wis.
Application May 12,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for extracting or pulling nails, spikes or the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character characterized by extreme 5 simplicity of construction and yet will at the same time prove efficient for extracting or pulling nails of various sizes and also such nails that are either by structure without enlarged heads or from which the heads have been sheared.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side View of the nail puller.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the nail engaging end of the tool and Figure 3 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the tool at the nail engaging end thereof.
In accordance with the present invention the tool comprises a handle 5 formed of iron or other suitable material and which is preferably equipped at one end as at 6 for use as a prying bar for prying open the lids of boxes or the like.
At its respective opposite end the bar 5 is formed with an integral claw nail-starter I that is curved to present a convex fulcrumed edge 8 and a sharpened end edge 9 which latter engages the shank of the nail at one side of the latter. 30 The end 9 of the claw I is adapted to cooperate with a jaw I formed integrally with one end of a yoke or loop H pivoted on the head or claw l and which has spaced parallel sides terminating at the end thereof remote from the jaw I0 in in- 35 wardly directed pins l2 journaled in sockets l3 provided therefor in opposite sides of the claw I as clearly shown.
A salient feature of the present invention is in having the jaw It progressively decreasing in 40 width from one side of the loop or yoke I I to the opposite side thereof so that the working edge M which cooperates with the edge 9 of the claw 1 extends obliquely to present between the edges 9 and M a space l which progressively decreases 45 in width and which consequently serves to permit receiving between the edges 9 and i4 nail shanks of diiferent diameter. Thus the tool is equipped for extracting or pulling nails of any suitable size or in other words for extracting or 50 pulling nails the shanks of which vary in diam- 1936, Serial No. 79,375
' eter from a very small diameter to relatively large diameter.
The operation of the nail puller is thought to be apparent and may be briefly set forth as follows: the nail or spike is wedged between the edges 9 and ll of the claw I and jaw III. In commencing to draw a nail or spike the bar 5 is held nearly vertical and after positive engagement has been made with the nail the handle 5 is then depressed or swung downwardly the face 8 acting as a fulcrum for the tool. It will thus be seen that with a tool of this character nails of varying sizes, weight, or shank diameters may be quickly and easily pulled or extracted.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:--
1. A nail puller comprising a handle having a claw at one end provided with an end edge, a U-shaped yoke pivoted at one end to said claw and provided at its free end with a jaw adapted to cooperate with said claw, the bight portion of said yoke progressively decreasing in width from one side to the other of said yoke to present a substantially diagonally disposed edge cooperable with the edge of said claw for accommodating therebetween nails of varying shank diameters.
2. A nail puller comprising a handle provided with a claw at one end, a U-shaped yoke pivotally connected to the claw and provided with a jaw adapted to coact with said claw, said yoke having parallel sides provided at one end with inwardly directed pins, and said claw being provided with sockets inopposite side edges thereof and in which said pins are journaled for pivotally connecting the yoke with said claw, the bight portion of said yoke being of progressively varying diameter and cooperable with the edge of said claw for accommodating therebetween nails of varying shank diameters.
3. A nail puller comprising a handle having a claw at one end provided with an end edge, a U-shaped yoke pivoted at one end to said claw and provided at its free end with a jaw adapted to cooperate with said claw, the bight portion of said yoke having one edge spaced from the end edge of the claw and inclined with respect to the claw to accommodate nail shanks of varying diameters.
