Description

'June 1, 1937. ys ALLAN 2,082,135
DI SPLAY FORM Filed March 13, 1935 INVENTOR Patented June 1, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates to display forms and more particularly to those employed in displaying coats, shirts and similar garments and has for its principal object to provide a form of this character with an attachment whereby the form may be readily fitted to garments of differentl 'size and shape without the use of padding.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive 'and light weight attachment that can be readily applied to an 'existing form.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is il- 1.3 lustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a form equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a'perspective view of the attachment as it appears before being applied on the form.
A Fig. 3 is a vertical section. through the form and attachment on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the shoulder portion of the form illustrating one of the hinge members for hingedly suspending the attachment on the form.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 4. Fig. Q is a horizontal section through the form and attachment on the line 6 6, Fig. 3. 3U Fig. 7 is a. perspective view of the screw for adjusting and retaining the attachment in relation to the form.
Referring more in detail to the drawing: I designates a conventional type form Which is usually constructed of paper board or other light material molded or pressed to shape in simulation of a human torso.
The form illustrated includes back and chest portions 2 and 3, shoulders 4 and 5, and a neck o portion 6. The lower parts of the back and chest portions 2 and 3 are drawn inwardly and downwardly to simulate a waist 'I and terminate in a slightly outwardlyflaring skirt 8. The side portions 9 and I0 of the form are provided at points in line with the arm portions of the shoulders with disks II having convex outer faces I2 to extend slightly within the sleeves of a garment applied on the form.
Located horizontally within the hollow interior of the form, slightly above the waist line thereof, is a partition I3 having an opening I4 therein for passing the upper end of a post I5, the 4post I5 being carried on a supporting base I6. The form is retained in vertically adjusted elevation relatively to the base by means of a stop collar II slidable on the post I5 and having a flange portion I8 engaging under the face of the partition I3. The collar I'I is retained in adjusted position by means of a thumb screw I@ that is manipulated through a notch 20 formed in the skirt 5 of the front portion of the form as best illustrated in Figs. l and 3.
Forms of the type just described are furnished in sizes substantially proportionate to the garments to be displayed thereon, but owing to the 10 different shapes of the garments and particularly the lower or skirt portions thereof, it is impossible to ll out the garment Without the use of padding. Application of the padding is a tedious and exacting task and requires a great deal 1;; of time to give the desired set of the garment.
As above pointed out, it is, therefore, the purpose of the present invention to provide a form of this character with an attachment that may be adjusted relatively to the form to iill out a o garment thereon as now to be described.
The attachment is best illustrated in. Fig. 2 and includes a shell 2| preferably formed of sheet Celluloid material pressed to conform to the shape of the back 2, shoulders 4 and 5 and sides 9 and I0 of the form, the corresponding parts of the shell being designated 2', 4', 5', 9' and I0', respectively.
The lower part of the shell conforms in shape to the rear portion of the Waist and skirt 8 as at 50 8 and terminates in horizontal alignment with the bottom edge thereof as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
rThe vertical side edges 22 and 23 of the shell extend in substantial alignment with the vertical center line of the arm disks Il and across the median line of the shoulders as at 24 and 25, respectively, the upper edge of the shell being cut away as at 26 to conform to the curvature of the neck 6 as shown in, Fig. l. The side edges , L0 22 and 23 are cut away in a similar manner as at 21 and 28 so that the shell can fit closely against the periphery of the disks II in completely collapsed position.
Fixed to the shoulder edges 24 and 25 of the ,i5 shell are pairs of fiexble straps 29 and 30 having loops 3l extending through slotted eyes 32 of fiat hook members 33 adapted to overlie the shoulder portions of the form. The hook members have prongs 35 adapted to be driven into 5o the form to flexibly and hingedly anchor the loops which suspend the shell from the shoulder of the form. The notched portion 26 which fits about the neck 6 of the form is also provided with a similar strap 36 carrying a hooked prong mem- 55 ber 31 that is driven into the back of the neck as best shown in Fig. 3.
It is thus apparent that the shell is attached to the shoulder portion of the form and depends freely therefrom to provide for adjusting the skirt portion of the form to a garment by moving the skirt portion S of the shell toward or away from the form until the garment has the proper set.
This is accomplished by means of a screw 38 that is threaded in a bracket 39 attached to the inner wall of the form at a point directly opposite the notch 2t. lThe bracket preferably includes a strip il shaped to it the inner contour of the form and which has its ends secured thereto by suitable fastening devices il extending through holes in the bracket and through aligning holes in the wall of the form.
The screw 38 engages in a threaded opening 42 in the bracket and has its shank end i3 projecting through an opening M- in the form so that the end thereof engages against the inner face of the shell. The projecting end of the screw has a reduced extension or pilot 45 for mounting a washer d5 which forms an extended bearing surface for the screw. The reduced eX* tension is preferably of greater length than the thickness of the washer so that it projects through an opening @il provided in the shell 2l. The lower end of the shell is thus supported on the screw extension so as to relieve strain upon the shoulder fastening members above described and to prevent lateral lshifting movement of the shell relatively to the form.
ln order to facilitate operation of the screw, the inner end thereof is provided with a wing shaped head t8 which may be manipulated through the notch 28.
In fitting a garment to a form equipped with an attachment constructed and assembled as described, the garment is applied over the form and the skirt portion of the garment is lled out by adjusting the screw 88 so as to move the lower portion of the shell until the proper set of the garment is effected.
Since the shell extends from one side of the form to the other, the skirt and back portions thereof are smoothly supported across the entire width of the form and, therefore, the necessity of paddings orother fillings is eliminated.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that I have provided an attachment of simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily attached to an existing form.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination with a display form for clothing shaped to fit one style of garment and having front and back portions, shoulder portions and a neck portion, an attachment including a shell shaped to correspond to the back portion of the dispia,7 form and provided centrally of its upper edge with a recess tting the neck portion of the form, flexible hinges located at opposite sides of the recess of the attachment and secured to the same and provided with means for securing them to the shoulder portions of the display form, a flexible hinge arranged centrally of the recess of the said attachment and secured to the same and provided with means for securing it to the neck portion of the display form, and means for adjustably moving the shell on said flexible hinges to fill out the back portion of a garment carried by the display form.
2. In combination with a clothing display form having back and shoulder portions shaped to t one style of garment, an attachment for the form including a shell shaped to correspond to the back and shoulder portions of the form, means hingingly attaching the upper edge of the shell to the shoulder portions of the form, and means for adjusting the lower part of the shell to and from the corresponding part of the form to fill out and extend a garment of a style different from that for which the form is designed without the use of padding.
