This invention relates to attaching devices,
particularly attaching devices to be employed in connection -with elastic filaments for use as hat elastics.

after which it may resist withdrawal through the perforated fabric, to anchor the end of the filament in position in relation to the fabric.
My invention is directed particularly to an attaching device associated with elastic bands, filal5 ments or strands, employed to hold hats on the heads of the wearers, by the elastic tension in-.
herent in the elastic strand, filament or band, avoiding the necessity for sewing such elements to the hat or similar article of apparel.
Where I have employed, in connection with elastic filaments, strands or hands, attaching tips which include a thin sheet metal tip formed into a perforating portion, a strand engaging portion and a guiding portion, in which the perforating portion and the strand engaging'portion are respectively of conical and cylindrical contour, with the free end of the strand or filament enclosed within the conical and cylindrical portion, in accordance with an attaching device described in the patent to Schwartzman, No. 1,867,330, July 12, 1932, I have found that such device, while suitable for attachment to an inelastic string,
rope or thread, made of textile material, does not adequately anchor itself to the elastic filament, web or strand, particularly where the latter comprises one or more filaments of rubber encased within an enveloping braid or winding of textile material. The attempt to apply requisite pressure on a-tip of the character referred to in the aforementioned Schwartzman patent to an elastic filament serves either to sever the elastic or, upon tensioning the filament against the tip, causes release of the anchored end. Accordingly, it is an object of my invention to provide an anchoring tip for elastic filaments, webs, strands or ropes, particularly those which are employed as hat elastics, in which the attachment of the tip to the filament is peculiarly adapted for attachment to the elastic body constituting the filament, especially where the elastic means constitute a core oi. one or more filaments of rubber.
It is further contemplated by my invention to provide an attachment or anchoring device for v elastic strands, filaments, ropesor bands, which r avoids undue pressure of the attaching device to the filament or strand, which may otherwise sever the same or which so engages the elastic member that the attenuation incident to the 'use of the elastic will not release the elastic from the attaching or anchoring tip.
To attain these objects and such further objects as may appear herein or be hereinafter pointed out, I make reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my device in use as a hat elastic;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my anchoring tip beforeattachment;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3- -3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of my device, with the elastic filament ,in position;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of my hat elastic and anchoring tips in position;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of my device in anchoring position on the fabric with which it is to be used;
Figure '7 is a plan view showing the blank from which my attaching tip is made.
Making reference to the drawing, it is contemplated in the preferred form of my invention, to provide a hat elastic ill, having its free ends provided with anchoring tips I l and I 2.
For this purpose, where the elastic strand com prises a core of rubber and an encasing decorative fabric, either of braid or thread winding, I have found that completely encasing the free end of such material in a cylindrical or tubular tip, with firm connection between the attaching or anchoring tip and the strand, is inadequate as under tension the elastic strand attenuates and becomes free from the attaching or anchoring tip and such portions thereof which are employed to envelope the freeend of this strand.
Accordingly, in accordance with my preferred form of the invention, I provide an elastic attaching or anchoring tip which avoids the problems incident to an anchoring tip of the character hereinabove referred to and described in the Schwartzman patent when some of the features thereof are employed in connection with an elastic strand, web or rope.
My attaching device or anchoring tip is preferably formed from thin sheet metal or similar deformable sheeting and comprises a. body portion l3, stamped from a blank to include a perforating tip l4, extending into the filament attaching portion i5, of greater width, and terminating'into a filament guiding portion l8.
It is preferred initially to subject the blank shown in Figure '7 to a shaping operation, providing a generally U-shaped channel, thus forming the attaching or anchoring tip with spaced branches H and i8, and a generally semi-cylindrical section IS. The stamping and/or shaping operation may be simultaneously accompanied by an operation which indents the base 20 of the channel with an inwardly directed lug 2|.

It will be observed that the operation just described deforms the branches I7 and I8 so as to constrict the elastic at the portion 22 and leave unconstricted portions 23 and 25, to either side of the indentation 2i.
Thus, the strand in connection with the en'- veloping branches of the anchoring tip or attaching device, is constricted in part, leaving other portions of the strand unconstricted or in a distended relation by reason of the fact that the branches IT and is are so formed as not completely to envelope the strand, as will be clear from observing the relationship of the branches ll and i 8 in connection with the end 23 of the filament ill.
Thus it will be observed that one of the primary features of my invention resides in the provision of an attaching or anchoring tip in which the elastic attaching sections include means for constricting the elastic body andprovides means for expanding or leaving the elastic in the distended condition within the structure comprising the attaching branches, inwardly from the end of the strand. Thus, tension upon the elastic strand in relation to the anchoring or attaching tip, tending to attenuate the elastic filament,
will leave a portion of the filament free from the attenuating action, thereby to prevent disengagement of the elastic filament or strand from the anchoring or attaching tip.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, with filament enveloping sections ill and IS in overlapping position, in part, it will be understood thatthis' is merely for exemplifying one form of my invention which serves to provide filament attaching branches serving as filament constricting means and means to permita distension of the elastic filament in relation to However, the broader phases of my invention contemplate the combination-with. an elastic filament, cord or web having an attaching or anchoring tip which includes attaching branches constricting the elasticfilament, while providing means within the body of the attaching tip between the end of the filament and the point of attachment, permitting extension of the elastic filament or leaving the elastic filament at such portions in an unconstricted condition, to lea'vethis distended or unconstricted portionsubstantially free from the attenuating force, tending to release the anchoring or attaching tip from the elastic filament, strand, cord or web.
Therefore, though I have exemplified my invention in its preferred form, broader phases of my invention are set forth in, theappended claims.

An attaching device of the'character described comprising, in combination, a strand or filament of elastic material including a distensible rubber .-core having a free -"end provided with an anchoring or attaching tip comprising deformable sheet metal including a generally tri-. angularly formed perforating point and strand orfilament engaging branches substantially encasing said strand or filament and constricting the same, portions of said branches ,of lesser dimensions, leaving the strand or filament'free to expand or remain unconstricted between por-' tions of said branches and the strand filament end, said expanded portion of the filament being located at a point between the portions of the branches constricting the strand or filament and ABRAHAM sonosxo.
