The invention relates to calculating and bookkeeping machines provided with a laterally shiftable traveling carriage, for example, as shown and described in the United States application Serial No. 653,838 of January 27, 1933 and more particularly to a front feed device for such carriages.
For guiding paper around the platen, a front feed paper chute is provided for inserting paper at the front thereof. This mechanism also serves as a line finding device for properly locating the ledger sheet or other material inserted therein in relation to the printing line. The platen is rockably arranged and rocking the platen and its carrying frame away from printing position moves the guiding mechanism to a position where it will properly direct material around the platen.
The main object of the invention is to provide resilient means in the front feed chute for enabling a feed of a paper or card in front of a paper wound around the platen.
Another object of the invention is to arrange said resilient means to enable a feed of a paper or card in front of said before named paper or card.
Further objects of the invention will be pointed out in the following detailed description with reference to the annexed drawing.
A preferred form of an embodiment of the invention is shown in the annexed drawing.

General description sheet remains in the machine during the entire til run, it is inserted at the rear thereof and fed around the platen by means of pressure rolls until its top edge passes beyond the printing line in the customary manner. As there are generally a large number of accounts to balance, and consequently a large number of ledger sheets to be handled, it is necessary that means be provided whereby these ledger sheets may be quickly inserted around the platen roll, located in relation to the printing line and, then a third card relating to the special transactions inserted in front of the ledger sheet which after the balancing operation is completed, is quickly removed from the machine with the least amount of effort possible on the part of the operator.
To accomplish this result the machine of the instant invention in its preferred form has been provided with a shiftable platen which is automatically rocked or tilted upwardly away from the printing line to a-more accessible or front feeding position when the traveling carriage is tabulated to a predetermined columnar position. Simultaneously with the rocking of the platen away from printing position the front feed guide chute is rocked into guiding position and after the platen has completed its movement away from printing position the pressure rolls are automatically disengaged from the platen roll and the material wound there-around. The third sheet may now be removed by pulling it from around the platen, and another sheet may then be inserted in the front feed guide chute,

The rocking of the platen and its carrying frame away from printing position and the cooperation of the rollers 34 and 35 with the inclined slots 36 and 31 changes the positions of the arms 30 and 3l so that the bar 23 and lateral guides 22 and 22' are tilted into alinement, with a front feed guide table 40 which extends the width of the platen I4 and is secured to the platen frame as shown in full lines andthe ledger card 24 any other end plates 42 and 43. Adjustably mounted on the rear feed table I3 are rear lateral guides 4| (Figs. 1 and 2), the lateral locations of which may be shifted to conform to the locations of the front guides 22 and 22.
When the platen is away from printing position, as shown in Fig. 2, the top edge of the bar 23 is so positioned in relation to the printing line that it serves as a means for properly locating material inserted at the front of the platen in proper relation to the printing line. As may be seen from Fig. 2 when the platen is out of printing position the pressure rolls 26 (Fig. 2) are disengaged therefrom thereby permitting paper to be inserted within the lateral guides 22 and 22 and simply pushed around the platen I4, guided by the front feed table 23 and 40 until the top edge of the bar 23 is in alinement with the bottom of the last row of printing upon said ledger sheet. This locates the ledger sheet in relation to the printing mechanism so that when the platen is returned to printing position the space just below the printing on said ledger sheet will be in alinement; with the impression mechanism.
The account or work sheet II together with a carbon sheet is inserted from the rear when the platen I4 (Fig. 2) is rocked away from printing position and fed along the rear table I3 around the platen I4. The papers are retained tightly by several auxiliary pressure rolls arranged upon a rod I5. The rod I5 is supported by two arms I6 pivoted on brackets H of the rear table I3 and acted upon by means of springs I8 tensioned between the brackets I! and the arms I6.
A pair of resilient straps I9 (Fig. 3) are fastened in any suitable way to the rear table I3 and guided around the platen I4. The free ends of the straps are secured to a rod 20. In order to enable inserting a ledger card or other paper from the front, notches 2| are provided in the lateral guides 22 and 22' of the front feed paper guide table 23 and 40 to receive the ends of the rod 20, when the platen is rocked away from printing position as shown in dashed-dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When the platen is out of printing position and the ends of the rod 20 engage the notches 2| of the guidances 22 and 22, a ledger card 24 can be inserted from the front and alined to the proper printing line. Thereupon the rod 20 is freed from the notches and laid upon the card 24 in Fig. 2, whilst the work sheet II and the carbon paper I2 are retained in proper place upon the platen I4 by the auxiliary rollers of the rod I5. In front of the straps I9 record material 25 can be inserted, whereupon the platen is rocked into printing position as .shown in Fig. 1, wherein the three papers are held tightly by lower pressure rollers 26.
After the printing is done, the platen is rocked away from printing position thus enabling the withdrawal of the front paper 25, as the rollers 26 move away from the platen I4, the card 24, however, is retained in proper position by the straps I 9.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described, is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the embodiments herein disclosed, for it is susceptible'of embodiment invarious other forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.

1. In a machine of the class specified in combination with a laterally shiftable carriage provided with a platen rockable into and out of printing position, a front feed guide chute for feeding record material from the front, a front feed guiding table, a rear feed guiding table, of resilient straps wound around said platen and fastened to the rear feed guiding table, and of means for connecting said. straps, said means cooperable with said front feed guide chute to hold the straps in the front feed chute for front feeding with the carriage out of printing position.
2. In a machine of the class specified in combination with a laterally shiftable carriage provided with. a platen rockable into and out of printing position, a front feed guide chute for feeding record material from the front, a front feed guiding table, a rear feed guiding table, of resilient straps wound around saidplaten and fastened to the rear feed guiding table, of a rod connecting said straps and of notches in said front feed guide chute adapted toreceive said rod with the carriage out of print-ing position.
3. In a machine of the class described, having a platen, a guide chute, a front feed guide means cooperable with said chute to guide record ma terial in front feeding operations, a rear feed guide means normally operable to guide record material from the rear of the machine, and means for coupling the rear feed guide means to the chute for certain front feeding operations.
4. In a machine of the class described having a platen, a front feed guide chute, a front feed guide plate cooperating with the chute to guide record material in front feeding operations, a rear feed guide plate normally operable to guide record material from the rear, and means cooperable with the rear feed guide plate and the chute to enable the rear feed guide plate to be used in certain front feeding operations, whereby the chute and both guide plates can be used for simultaneously guiding record material in said certain front feeding operations.
5. In a machine of the class described having a platen movable into and out of printing position, the combination of a front feed guide chute, a front guiding table cooperable with said chute for guiding record material from the front of guiding table for guiding record material from the rear of the machine, means connected to said rear table and extending forwardly around the platen, said means being shiftable into engagement with said front feed guide chute when the platen is out of printing position whereby said rear guiding table can also operate as a guide in front feeding'operations.
6. In a machine of the a platen, a guide chute for record material, a front feed guide plate cooperating with said chute to guide record material in front feeding operations, a rear feed guide plate normally effective to guide record material when it is fed from the rear, and manipulative means connected to Strife. rear feed guide plate and engag-eable with the KURT GELPKE.
