IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 20S,l46, dated September 17, 1878 application filed July 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BELL, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is areprescntation of a vertical central section of my bottle-stopper. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view of the same.
The nature of my invention relates to stoppers for cologne-bottles and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described.
Upon the body, which is in the form of an inverted cup, I place a circumferential groove, beveled from the center in opposite directions, and in this groove I place a rubber band of corresponding form, which band extends slightly beyond the plane of the body to make a close joint in the neck of the bottle. To the head of this body, through a suitable perforation, I pivot a nozzle, to the lower. end of which an arm is rigidly secured, which arm acts as a valve over a vent in the head which leads to the channel through the nozzle. Pins upon each side of the arm prevent too much lateral movement. The nozzle is made ornamental, and is arranged in relation to the body so as to open or close the valve as said nozzle is turned to the right or left,
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the stopper, having head A, and provided on its outer surface with a slot, a, having the bottom thereof beveled in opposite directions, leaving the center the highest point. A rubber band, B, of corresponding form fits into this slot to, and projects slightly beyond the plane of the surface. I
The head A is provided with an aperture, a, which leads into the center channel 0 of a nozzle, 0, pivoted in the center of the head A. Rigid with the bottom of the swiveled nozzle 0 is an arm, C, which extends radially outward and constitutes a valve over the aperture a. Pins :1; :20 prevent extended motion to this arm, allowing only suflicient motion to cover and uncover the orifice a.
It will thus be seen that the nozzle 0 acts as a medium for opening and closing the valve at will, and the rubber band serves to make an air-tight joint in the neck of the bottle.
The advantages and operation of my invention are obvious.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The head A, having aperture to, combined with nozzle 0 and valve 0, operated by the said nozzle, as and for the purpose specified.
