This invention relates to gilling machines, Worsted draw frames and like machines for preparing fibrous Vmaterial for spinning or other treatment or use, as set forth in the specification of my co-pending application Serial No. 737,368
led July 28, 1934, of which the present application is a division.
` More particularly, the invention relates to mechanism for reciprocating a slide or bar to carry, orto transmit reciprocating motion to, a surface roller or rollers or other device or devices for use in winding fibrous material in the `form of slivers or the like into balls or rolls.
The invention provides an assembly adapted to be fitted to a gilling machine, Worsted draw frame or like machine, comprising a plate which when in position is disposed vertically and which carries a slide-bar-Vactuating crank .and gearing for transmitting motion to the crank.
The said plate and parts provided in or upon it can be easily machined and erected or applied for use, are neat and comp-act in disposition, and ,can be used if need be for either end, right-hand or left-hand, of a machine.
Other objects and features of the invention are `set forth in the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevation showing mechanism comprising a crank for reciprocating the slide or bar carrying surface rollers in a gill box or worsted draw frame or analogous machine. Fig. 2 is mainly a side ele `vation of parts shown in Fig. 1 and in part a `vertical section taken on the plane indicated by `the line II-I of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is mainly a plan `and partly a section taken on the plane indicated by the line III-III of'Fig. 1. Fig. 3 also shows .in horizontal section parts broken off in Figs.

Referring to the drawing,'t`ne slide or bar :to be reciprocated is provided or formed with a depending plate ||2 having arms H3, H4 form- `ing between them a slide-way H5 rigid with the slide and disposed transverse to the direction of reciprocation of the slide denotes a radially adjustable crank-pin carried on a cran `plate and cause-d, by means of a slide-block I mounted upon it, to engage the slide-way E i5. 'Ihe crank-plate ||l is mounted to be revoluble relatively to a vertical plate H9 secured toor formedupon a stationary part |29 of the machine `and serving `also to carry gearing comprising eccentric toothed wheels i2i., |22 for revolving the crank-plate. The gearing for transmitting motion to the crank ||6 comprises,` in addition to the eccentric toothed wheels |2|, |22, a worm wheel |23 which receives motion from a worm |24 on a driving shaft |25 and which is in connection with a gear wheel |23, which, by means of an intermediate wheel |21 transmits motion to a toothed wheel |28 in connection with the eccentric wheel |2|, a toothed wheel |29 in connection with the crank plate .and a toothed wheel |30 which is in connection with the other eccentric wheel |22 and which transmits motion to the toothed wheel |29. The toothed wheel |29 has a pitch circle of a diameter twice that of the toothed wheel |30 in mesh with it, so that the speed of the crank H6 is increased and decreased twice in each revolution. The wheels are so pro.- portioned and disposed that the crank Ht is vrevolved and the slide or bar reciprocated with the frequency requisite, and that the crank I3 is revolved with the greatest speed at or near the reversals of the direction of motion of the slide or bar and so that the sli-de or bar I receives an approximately uniform motion in each direction and that the motion is reversed in direction quickly at the end of each stroke. The slide or bar carries surface rollers |35, which revolve in bearing brackets |32 while being reciprocated by means of the slide or bar One surface roller |3| is shown in full and a second is shown in part. In Fig. 3 parts between the ends of the one surface roller |3|, of which the two ends are shown, the slide or bar fl and the part of the plate ||2 from which the arms H3, ||4 extend are broken away for parts below them to be shown, the arms l I3, It being shown in horizontal section taken approximately on the plane indicated by the arrow |33 in Fig. 1.
In the preferred construction illustrated the plate ||9 is so formed that holes or slots therein are disposed symmetrically about a plane transverse to the direction of movement of the sli-de or bar so that parts to be applied or attached at the opposite sides of that plane may be applied or attached at one side or the other as may be requisite or convenient. Preferably the crank H6 is formed as `a pin adapted to be inserted from the front of the machine or other place easy of access into the crank plate Ill, whereby adjustment is facilitated.
The plate H9, which is upright in use, is formed at the upper part with ears |33, |35 for attachment to the stationary part |20 of the machine and is formed inthe middle of its width with a horizontal slot |36 and a vertical slot |37, one above the other, in which are adjustable and Cal secured, by nuts, studs 38, |39 carrying the eccentric toothed wheels 2| |22, respectively, in mesh with one another and fast, respectively, With the toothed Wheels |28, |30. Two elongated holes |40, |4| are formed at opposite sides of and equidistant or approximately equidistant from the vertical slot |31 and with central parts at a level slightly below its center, one hole |40 to allow passage of part of a bracket |42 forming a bearing for a stud Y|43 to carry the crank plate ||1 and the toothed wheel |29, and the other hole |4| to allow passage of part of a bracket |44 to carry a shaft |45 to carry the worm wheel |23 and toothed wheel |26. Above and below the oval holes |40, |4| are formed vertical slots |46 for the passage of bolts for securing in position the brackets |42, |44, which are themselves formed with horizontal slots |41, |48, respectively, for the passage of said bolts. At opposite sides of and equidistant or approximately equidistant from the horizontal slot |36 are formed curved slots |49 approximately con- .centric with the stud |38, and in one of these curved slots |49 a stud |50 which bears the wheel |21 is secured by a nut, while the other curved slot |49 is vacant. The bracket |44 is bolted in such a position on the plate ||9 that the worm wheel |23 meshes with the worm |24. The wheel |21 on thestud |50 is in mesh with the toothed wheel |28 on the shaft |45 and is also in mesh with the toothed wheel |28. The bracket |42 is bolted in such position on the plate |9 that the toothed wheel |29 is in mesh with the toothed wheel |30. The toothed` wheel |29 is secured upon a sleeve or boss formed on the crank plate ||1, and the crank plate Il'l and the toothed wheel |29 are held upon the stud |43 by means of a collar and a set-screw |52, the set-screw |52 and stud |43 being formed with passages, not shown, by which lubricant may be led to a central hole in the crank plate ||1. The crank plate H1 is formed with a radial slot |53 in which the crank pin H9 is adjustable and secured in position. 'I'he slideblock H8 applied to the crank is adapted to slide up and down in the slide-way formed by the arms H3, ||4. With the arrangement of the toothed wheels |26, |28 in connection with the worm wheel |23 and the lower eccentric toothed wheel 2| any requisite frequency of reciprocation of the plate or bar may be obtained, and by use of suitable eccentric wheels |2|, |22 any requisite relation between the maximum and minimum speed of the crank plate ||1 may be obtained.
What I claim is:-
1. In a gilling machine, worsted draw-frame or like machine, mechanism for the purpose hereinbefore set forth, comprising a stationary vertical plate formed in the middle of its width with a horizontal slot and a Vertical slot one above the other, said plate also formed with two elongated holes at opposite sides of and approximately equidistant from said vertical slot with their centers at a level slightly below the center of said vertical slot, vertical slots above and below said holes, and two curved slots at opposite sides of and approximately equidistant from said horizontal slot, studs secured in the vertical and horizontal slots in the middle of the plate, eccentric toothed wheels mounted on said studs and in gear with one another, toothed wheels fast with said eccentric toothed wheels, a bracket with horizontal slots secured in the vertical slot above and below one of said elongated holes and extending into said elongated hole, a stud in said bracket, a crank-plate on said stud, a crank radially adjustable in said crank-plate, a toothed wheel in connection with said crank-plate and in mesh With the toothed wheel fast with the eccentric toothed wheel on the stud in the rstmentioned vertical slot, a gear wheel in mesh with the toothed wheel fast with the other eccentric toothed wheel, a stud secured in one of said curved slots and carrying said gear wheel, a toothed wheel in mesh with said gear wheel, a shaft to Vcarry said last-mentioned toothed wheel, a driving member on said shaft, a bracket which carries said shaft and is formed with horizontal slots and is secured in the vertical slots above and below the other elongated hole and extends through said other elongated hole, means for driving said driving member, a slideblock on said crank, and a plate presenting a slide-way receiving said slide-block and given reciprocatory movements in the rotation of said crank.
2. In a gilling machine, worsted draw-frame or like machine, in combination with a reciprocatory slide to elTect reciprocatory motion of means for use in winding brous material into balls or rolls, a vertical slide-way rigid with said slide and disposed wholly below said slide, a crank in engagement with said slide-way, a crank-plate carrying said crank, a stationary vertical plate on which said crank-plate is revolubly mounted so as to be vertically and horizontally adjustable, and gearing all carried by said stationary vertical plate and serving to transmit rotary movement to said crank-plate, said gearing including intermeshing eccentric toothed wheels, toothed wheels in connection with said eccentric toothed wheels, a driving gear Wheel, a toothed wheel in engagement with said gear wheel serving to drive one of the toothed wheels in connection with said eccentric toothed Wheels, and a toothed wheel in connection with said crank-plate and in mesh with the toothed wheel in connection with the other of said eccentric toothed wheels, said vertical plate being formed in the middle of its Width with a horizontal slot and a vertical slot one above the other and with curved slots equidistant from said horizontal slot, studs carrying said eccentric toothed wheels and secured in said horizontal and vertical slots, and a stud carrying the toothed wheel in engagement with said gear wheel and secured in one of said curved slots.
3. In a gilling machine, worsted draw-frame or like machine, in combination with a reciprocatory slide for transmitting reciprocating motion to parts for winding fibrous material into balls or rolls, a vertical slide-way rigid with said slide and disposed wholly below said slide, a radially adjustable crank contrived to work in said slideway, a crank plate carrying said crank, and gearing including intermeshing eccentric toothed wheels for rotating said crank plate, and driving and intermediate gear wheels for rotating said eccentric toothed wheels, bearing parts for said crank plate and said wheels, a vertical plate carrying all said bearing parts, said vertical plate formed in the middle of its width with a horizontal slot and a vertical slot, studs secured in said slots and carrying said eccentric toothed wheels, a stud carrying said crank plate, and a bracket forming a bearing for said last mentioned stud and mounted for adjustment on said vertical plate, said vertical plate formed with a curved slot, and a stud carrying said intermediate gear wheel and adjustable in said slot.
4. In a gilling machine,` Worsted draw-frame or like machine, in combination with a reciprocatory slide toeiect reciprocatory motion of means for use in Winding fibrous material into balls or rolls, a vertical slide-Way rigid with said slide and disposed wholly below said slide, a crank in engagement with said slide-way, a crank-plate carrying said crank, a stationary vertical plate on which said crank-plate is revolubly mounted so as to be vertically and horizontally adjustable, and gearing all carried by said stationary plate and serving to transmit movement to said crankplate, said gearing including intermeshing eccentric toothed Wheels, toothed Wheels in connection with said eccentric too-thed wheels, a vertically and horizontally adjustable driving gear Wheel, a toothed Wheel in engagement with said gear Wheel serving to drive one of the toothed Wheels in connection with said eccentric toothed Wheels, and a toothed Wheel in connection with said crank-plate, said last-mentioned toothed Wheel meshing With the toothed Wheel in connection with the other of said eccentric toothed Wheels and being made With a. pitch circle twice that of the toothed wheel in mesh With it, said vertical plate being formed in the middle of its Width with a horizontal slot and a Vertical slot one above the other and with curved slots equidistant` from said horizontal slot, studs carrying said eccentric toothed Wheels and secured in said horizontal and vertical slots, and a stud carrying the toothed Wheel in engagement with said gear Wheel and secured in one of said curved slots.
