IMPROVEMENT IN BREAST-COLLARS FORHARNESS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,115, dated September 17, 1878; application filed July 25, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD PATTIN, of Marietta, in the county of \Vashington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breast-Collars, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a frontview of apart of a breastcollar to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same detached from the collar.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved breast-collar, which shall be so constructed as to work easier upon the horse than breast-collars constructed in the usual way, and which may be placed higher up, so as to be in the most favorable position for the horse to apply his strength to the draft.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.

A is an iron connecting-rod, which is bent four times at right angles, or into bail form. The ends of the rod A are passed through eyes in the centers of the hinging-rods B, where they are secured in place by pins (J, which pass through them and rest against the outer sides of the said hinging-rods B. The outer sides of the hinging-rods B, against which the pins 0 rest, have double inclines formed upon them in such positions that the saidpins C may strike against their shoulders, to prevent the connecting-rod A from rising above a horizontal position, so that it cannot be forced up against the horses neck in holding back and impede his breathing.

The hinging-rods B are secured in folds or loops in the ends of the leather straps that form the parts of the open-front breast-collar D, so that the said straps D can turn upon the said rods B enough to allow the collar to accommodate itself to the movements of the horses shoulders in walking.

The lining-leather d of the parts of the collar D, or leather pieces attached to said collar, projects beyond the ends of the said parts, to guard against the angles of the connectingrod A rubbing against or chafing the horses breast. 4

This construction allows the collar to be raised into such a position that the horse can apply his strength to the greatest advantage without pressing against his windpipe or impeding his breathing.

With this construction the connecting-rod A, when not under strain in holding back, can drop down, so that the horse cannot break it by rubbing against a post or other object.

Having thus described my invention, I

' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the pivoted connecting-rod A, the hinging-rods B, and the fastening-pins G with the ends of the parts of an open-front breast-collar, D, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. In a breast-collar, the double inclines formed upon the outer sides of the hingingrods B to receive the pins 0 of the connectingrods A, to limit the upward movement of the said connecting-rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
