WITNESS ATTORNEY Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONNECTER Application May 22, 1935, Serial No. 22,826
1 Claim.
The invention relates to connecters and more particularly to the type for connecting cables or conductors to the terminals or posts of storage batteries. v
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a battery terminal connecter, wherein the same can be conveniently and easily released from the battery post without necessitating the prying of the connecter therefrom which ordinarily results in damage to the post and also expedites exchanging batteries within a motor vehicle or in removing the connecters from the posts of such batteries with dispatch.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a connecter of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form and is in the nature of a clamp for gripping a battery post for the connecting of a cable therewith and assures quick attachment and detachment to and from the terminal or post of the storage battery.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a connecter of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, strong, durable, readily and easily handled for clamping and unclamping action and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a storage battery showing the clamp or connecter constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto the said clamp or connecter being partly in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2--2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a clamp or connecter showing by full lines in bolt releasing position and by dotted lines in bolt engaging position.
Figure 5 is an end elevation of a modified form of clamp or connecter.
Figure 6 is a top plan view partly in section thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, in Figure 1 A designates generally a portion of a storage battery having the usual terminal or post B to which a clamp is applied for connecting a cable or conductor thereto.
The connecter or clamp embodying the present invention comprises a split collar or sleeve It], in this instance providing a tapered opening corresponding to the terminal or post B for accommodating the same While opposite the split side and integrally formed with said collar or sleeve is a socketed coupling extension I I for the fitting therein of the cable or connecter I2 of conventional kind.
Confronting the split in the collar or sleeve II) and at opposite sides of the same are the ears I3 and M, respectively. The ear I3 is bifurcated to accommodate therein the head I5 of a threaded bolt I6 and this head is swingingly connected with the ear I3 by a pivot I'I. Carried on the bolt i6 is a nut I8 it having an annular groove I9 provided therein, the nut being swivelled in the ear I4.
The ear I4 is formed with parallel spaced jaws 2|] which are designed to be spread to receive the spool shaped nut therebetween and thereafter adapted to be closed into the channel or groove I9 of the said nut for the swivel connection of the nut I8 with the ear I4. When the spool shaped nut is screwed home on the bolt the ears I3 and I4 will be forced toward each other to bind the clamp on the post B and when the said nut is turned in a reverse direction the ears I3 and I4 will be spread away from each other to permit the ready removal of the clamp from the post. By spreading the jaws 20 to the full line position in Figure 4, the spool nut can be swung with the bolt I6 outwardly through said spread jaws 20.
In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification wherein the ear 2I has the forked extension 22 accommodating the shank 23 of the bolt While the head 24 of said bolt is received in a jaw 25 on the ear 2|. The shank 23 of the bolt is held in the forked extension 22 by a cotter pin fastener 26. The head of the bolt 24 is square and the jaw 25 holds the said head 24 to prevent the turning of the bolt when in the forked extension 22 so that the nut 21 on the bolt can be readily turned without turning the said bolt.
It is deemed needless to describe in detail the manner of connecting and disconnecting the clamp to and from the terminal or post B because from the foregoing and the drawing it should be apparent that quick detachment and attachment is possible in the use of the clamp or 5 connecter.
What is claimed is:
A terminal clamp for the post of a storage battery, comprising a split compressible member having a socket for the post, and having spaced 10 parallel and bifurcated ears projecting from the split side thereof, a projection on the clamp 011t-
