Description

R. HUDSON. ;Iile-Hlder.
No. 20?;967 Patented sept, 1o, 4187s. Y
3M d AvENToR WITNESSES ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT @Treten RICHARD HUDSON, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EDIVARD P. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FILE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,967, dated September IO, 1STE; application tiled August 20, IS.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD HUDsoN, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shoe and File Holders and Hanging Drawers; and I do hereby decla-re that the ollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved holder for tiles, &c., and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in means for exhibiting drawings, prints, archi tectural plans, engravings, and the like, and for displaying shoes, shirts, bolts of cloth, and other piece-merchandise; and the nature of the invention consists in the combination, with a drawer having a receptacle arranged therein and hinged to its front portion, of a vibrating frame at the bottom of the drawer and supporting said receptacle, a handle-frame pivoted to the front portion of the drawer, and pivotal rods connecting the said frames.
It also consists in a supporting-frame having its side arms extended through the bottom ot' the drawer and hinged, which, being .vibrated upward, raises a receptacle in said drawer, and forms props for its support, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a drawer of suitable construction applied to a desk, counter, or other object. Inside of this drawer is a supplementary receptacle, B, that may be made of wood, metal, or other sufticientlystiff material. This receptacle is open-ended, and is of less dimensions every way than the drawer. It is hinged by its front edge to the bottom of the drawer, close up against its front wall, a, which, for the more convenient exhibition ot' drawings, engravings, and prints, is inclined upon its inside.
C C indicate levers, extending each through a slot, b, in the bottom of the drawer, and vibrating freely upon a bolt, c. These levers are connected together by a brace, d, and that portion thereot1 extending through said slots is bent, as shown at d', in order that their inner branches may lie flat upon the inside of the bottom of the drawer, and their outer branches may be received in grooves e, form ed in the under side of said bottom, flush therewith-this in order that the drawer may have the usual neat lit in its receptacle in the desk or counter.
The receptacle B rests upon the brace d ot the levers C C', and when the said levers are swung outward upon their fulcrums c, the said receptacle is also swung out upon its hinges into the position shown in Fig. I. At the same time the outer branches, f, ot' these levers move out of their grooves, and are converted into props, which sustain the drawer in an inclined position upon a table or desk. This is conveniently done by means of a frame, D, composed of the side bars, g, and a number of spaced slats, g', connecting the saine. This frame is hinged or pivoted at 7i to the front portion of the drawer-sides, and its side bars, g, are connected to the levers C C by the pivotal rods r. By catching hold of this frame and drawing it up, the drawer being held in an inclined position, the under frame, C C d, under receptacle B, is swung out, carrying the receptacle with it, and placing it in a conveniently-inclined position. IVhen fully drawn out, this frame B abuts against the front ot' the drawer, and is at right angles, or nearly so, to the bottom thereof.
Engravings, prints, architectural drawings, and plans, lying the one upon the other in the receptacle l, may be examined and turned over successively upon the frame D, vibrating upon their lower edges, and after examination be thrown back in the same order, but at the saine time into the said receptacle, by thrustA ing back frame D.
This device may be used for other purposes than exhibiting drawings. It will be found of great service in displaying shoes, dry-goods, shirts, and other merchandise.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The combination, with a drawer, A, havin g a vibratin g receptacle, D, arranged therein, ot a vibrating frame at the bottom of the I ceptacle B, supported by said brace and hinged to the' front portion of the drawer, aframe, D,
hinged to the front of the drawer aforesaid,
and pivotal rods connecting said frames, substantially as specified. f' In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
i RICHARD HUDSON.
