Another object of this invention is to provide the cutter head with a clamping member which, in clamping the cutter head to the handle, automatically locates the guard and cutter of the no head and yieldingly urges the cutter against the inside of the shear plate.
Another object of this invention is to provide the cutter head of a shaving machine with rigid self supporting cutting -blades which are angular 25 to the shear blades with which they cooperate.
Another object of this invention is to provide the armature shaft of the motor of the shaving machine with a file which presents a small portion of its peripheral surface below the cutter 30 head so that the fingemails may be conveniently filed and shaped therewith.

vThe shaving machine forming the subject matter of our present invention is constructed vso that its cutter head may be held at various angles against the surface of the skin without impairing the cutting operation of the cutter head, and in addition the cutter head is mounted angularly in the end of the handle to facilitate the manipulation of the shaving machine in .the most convenient position.
As illustrated in the figures of the drawings, the shaving machine comprises a handle I which is hollow and has a suitable electric motor (not shown) mounted therein for the operation of the cutter in the cutter head. In the outer end of the handle I is formed an angularly positioned transverse channel 2 into which the cutter head of the shaving machine is mounted. Within the handle I is mounted to oscillate the lever 3 which is bifurcated at one end at 4 to have the eccentric pin 5 carried by the motor shaft 6 project thereinto and oscillate the lever 3 on the rotation of the armature shaft. The free end of the oscillating lever 3 carries the lug l which is adapted to engage the cutter of the cutter head to be reciprocated thereby.
The cutter head is made up of a guard 8 which is preferably formed up of sheet metal to provide a hollow guide member with a fiat supporting base at the bottom and a rounded shear plate at the top. A hollow cutter 9, which is also preferably formed up of sheet metal and provided with a rounded top and a flat base, is mounted within the guard 8 so as to have its rounded top reciprocate below the rounded $11231- plate of the guard and in contact there- The rounded and convexed outside of the shear plate of the guard has a larger radius than the rounded and concaved inside and the two radii are so arranged that the thickness of the shearing plate gradually decreases from the sides towards the middle thereof. This makes it possible to provide the shear plate with a crown of extreme thinness which, due to its curvature, is
extremely rigid and self supporting and will not yield when pressure is applied against it in shaving. The shear plate is divided into a series of narrow parallel blades in, it by the slits H, H which are cut thru the rounded end of the guard to provide the cutting edges on the under sideof the shear plate.
The heavier outer ends of the blades llfi, iii of t it, ill thereof group the hairs and guide them into the slits l i. In this way the hair to be shaved is guided in parallel rows over the shear plate to project thru the thinnest portion thereof to be cut oil by the cutter close to the surface of the skin.
The rounded top of the cutter 9 is yieldingly held against the correspondingly rounded under side of the shear plate and is divided into a series of angular parallel cutting blades l6, It by slittingthe rounded top of the cutter at an angle to the sides thereof. The width and the arrangement, together with the length of movement of the cutting blades I 6, is such-that the sides thereof cooperate with the cuttingedges of the bladesill of the shear plate to clip the hair which is made to project thru the slits in the shear plate with a shear cut.
For the operation of the shaving machine the cutter head is clamped, to the handle bymeans ject thru the holes i9 and yieldingly rest against the base of the cutter 9 so as to constantly and yieldingly urge the rounded top of this cutter against the rounded bottom of the shear plate 8.
When the guard of the-cutter head is clamped to the handle. the lug I of the oscillating lever 3 projects thru the opening 2| in the base of th rd to engage into the transverse groove 22 provided in the bottom of the cutter. The oscillating lever is thus automatically connected to the cutter so that on the oscillation thereof by 5 the motor in the handle, the cutteris rapidly reciprocated within the guard to perform its cutting operation.
As heretofore pointed out, the rounding of the shear plate increases its rigidity tothe extent that its thickness may be reduced to a minimum so that the skin over which the shaving machine is drawn may enter the slits'in the shear plate ,to a point where the cutting blades of the cutter will sever the hair substantially next to the skin without cutting into. the smn.
The motor used for operating the shaving machine is not a self starting motor and for this reason a starting wheel 23 is mounted on the armature shaft 6. A small portion of the periphviding the periphery thereof with a file surface 25 so as to make it a rotary file with which the finger nails can be conveniently filed by resting the ball of the finger on the handle and holding the edge of the nail against the rotating file.
The nails may thus be quickly, easily and perfectly filed to any shape as the finger tip is at all times firmly supported on the handle portion surrounding the rotary file and can be evenly moved toward and away from the file.
Due to thefact that the shear plate of the cutter head is rounded and the cutter operates on a radius, it is possible to tilt the shear plate and raise the cutter head from the surface of the skin at an angle thereto with the result that the hair may be cut at varying distances from the'skin.
We claim:
In a. shaving machine, a handle, a cutter head comprising a fixed guard member, a movable guard member mounted to reciprocate'on "said #5 guard member, and a combined clamping screw and pressure member for clamping said guard member to said handle and holding said cutting member against said guard member.
